Odd siege
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:46:44 am »

So for my second siege, the goblins and giant olms are just sitting up near the lake, doing nothing.  It's been quite a while now - I was expecting them to be more aggressive (although I suppose if I could prosecute a siege simply by lying down near a lake, that's not a bad way to go :)  )

Confusingly, when I sounded the civilian alert, the Mayor took off up the side of the mountain - he's just around a hill from the invaders, also just sitting there.  The outpost liaison had just arrived, and the chased the Mayor up the hill.  I have nothing complicated set up, and his skills are just farming/plant gathering/cooking/cleaning.

I'm going to send my squads out, mostly because I'm tired of waiting with everybody stuck in the siege burrow, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts?

The siege wants to prevent the dwarven olympics from happening!  Run, little mayor, run!

In all seriousness, I'd call that a lucky break for ya, especially if the fortress could be entered.

I may have figured it out - I sent my squads after the invaders, and crushed them - but I hadn't seen a group of Trolls, who went in the entrance after I left.  Perhaps the Mayor saw them.  After killing them, too, I saw yet *another* group of goblins on foot in the other corner of the map, but they were fleeing.  Guess I need to look at all Z's more carefully when I'm invaded.  Lost one Axedwarf, may he rest in peace.

Here's another question, though - how long does it take for the drawbridge to go up?  I must have made a mistake somewhere, because it's not working, unless it really takes ages to go up ... it's hard to see now, too, all covered with moss and troll parts ...

Draw bridge goes up a few frames after the level is pulled. Now how long it takes for someone to actually pull the lever depends entirely on your fortress layout and your dwarves.

did a goblin drown in the lake? Because then the rest of the siege would just stand around gazing at the sky

If your all sealed up.  They won't come and step on trap, unless some bait is exposed.  I like to keep a cage of nonpet kittens, nearby the traps.  With the kitten cage lever inside the Danger burrow, for a safe and easy pull.  So when a siege stalls out like this, I can give them some motivation, to lure them into a lawn full of traps.

A drawbridge will go up/down 100 ticks (for reference, 1 dwarf step = ~10 ticks) after the lever is pulled unless there is at least one creature of size 1200000 on/under the drawbridge. If there is a large creature present then the bridge will either refuse to raise or it will break (if coming down).

Also note that bridges work on on/off signals, not toggles. This means that if you pull a lever (sending "on") and then connect it to a bridge and pull it again (sending "off"), the bridge won't do anything until you pull it a third time (sending "on").

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
