Playtesting: Homebrew Nautical Design

You are the captain of a ship, before the industrial revolution.  Times are hard throughout the world, with pirates rampant and war ever looming on the horizon.  Are you one of the pirates, looting every merchant vessel visible on the horizon whist hiding in the most unforgiving terrain?  Or are you a simple merchantman trying to make his living by shipping goods from town to town?  Perhaps you feel that you are a Buccaneer, serving your nation and ridding the world of the Pirate menace.  The choice, as with many others, is yours to make.

This is a game I designed while on deployment, but have never been able to actually get people to play (not many gamers when you work 12+ hours a day)  I am looking for the help of a few individuals that would be willing to help me playtest this (via posts) so I can find and iron out any bugs that may (and probably will) ensue.  All I ask is that those willing to participate are flexible enough to help me with editing mechanics while still being able to have fun in this mutual learning experience.  Should I get enough followers (only looking for 2-4, so shouldn't be too difficult) I will post the schematics and game rules that I have derived.  Or, should you prefer, I can email you the document with all the rules/mechanics I have derived.

Certainly looks interesting. I would play. (Unless the rules are utter irredeemable garbage.)

I'm in a similar situation (deployment wise) So I am interested. I'd love to play.

Sounds neat. I'd like to see the rules doc. Word of advice: PDFs rock.

OK, got everything originally written on the original post.  Beware, it may be a little wordy.

Right now, I would start all with a caravel.  Just pick your name, captain type, and a back story (short) and I'll see what I can do about getting started.  I will be able to post at least once a day, most days more, so we should be able to update frequently when we are ready.

How do I decide what ship I get. Is there a point system?

I want to be a diplomat with a caravel.

I'm interested. Can we choose whatever ship we want, or are there some character creation rules?

I tried modifying it as soon as I got the rules up, but it seems this was not visible to all.  I apologize for not making this more clear at the beginning.

I will play as Gunner First Class Jurgen Grekwater, recently promoted after successfully leading the boarding party that captured the (locally) infamous pirate caravel Nottingham. He is now captain of said ship.

CPT. Abib Alli: You are currently in the port of Vermallez, a medium village with 2 towns nearby ( that you are aware of).  Parallen, 14 days to your west, is a small town at the entrance of the incredibly large water way leading to untraveled waters due to heavy weather conditions preventing any craft from passing.  12 days to your NE is Tirailo, a small city on the tip of a peninsula that is a frequent port to many vessels.  Pirate attacks are frequent on both shipping lanes.

CPT. Jurgen: After your successful boarding of the Nottingham , you return to the port of Abola.  However, the flagship you were traveling with was sunk in the battle by a very small craft part of the pirate fleet you were attacking.  You know of Tirailo 18 days to your WSW, but have not explored to your north due to the shoaling all around the port you are stationed.

Captain Abib was known for the people he knew, being charismatic, he was often the one you talked to if you wanted to get something that wasn't exactly available by the most legal means. Abib came into quite a bit of money this way and the captain he served under was thrilled to have him for that same reason. The original captain however met his end after Abib decided enough was enough, being the middleman and had him gutted in a small pub by some nameless scoundrel. Abib now captains the Blazewind and is a fairly successful known smuggler and sailor.
