Dynasty and Last/Clan Names
« on: September 22, 2012, 05:10:42 pm »

Dynasty names for a ruling family line would help make the history in legends more organized.

I like the random last names of dwarfs, but it's odd that every creature gets a random last name that's unaffected by who their parents were. There should be random clan/last names that are generated at various times and passed down to offspring.

Also, maybe later, if you're a dwarf of a certain clan within a civilization, maybe those dwarfs of the clan can treat you better?

The random name and first name could be the Dwarf's personal names, then the clan name could be given seperately. It could even be stuff like "The House of Oiledwheels" or something, with House leaders.

In my opinion it fits the dwarves stylistically with clans, e.g "of Stonebeards clan". Humans probably wouldn't care as much for lineage unless they were nobles, though possibly more from what city they come. Elves could have some caste system which is independant on their parentage, but rather depends on what star sign/moon phase they were born in (they are hippies, after all), while goblins might belong to warbands.

A family House would function in almost the exact same way as a clan - the leaders of the house are the same as chieftains, each dwarf has loyalty to their house leader (I need to think of a better title for him). The house leader would be an aristocratic noble, perhaps chosen from the ranks of the House based on a procedurally generated system e.g. "most wealthy", "largest number of followers and friends", "heroism in battle" etc. If the leader of a Dwarven house arrives at your fortress, his house members in the fort will gain happy thoughts. He may also issue demands for the wellbeing of his fellow house members if he sees that they are neglected in some way.

In my opinion, clans should not always be a born-into-one-and-you're-done. Perhaps that should normally be the case, but heroes can become members of more prestigious clans; maybe changing clans is as common as changing jobs; maybe one changes clans only by marriage. It should probably vary some from civ to civ.

I could definitely see the leader of a prestigious and wealthy clan introduce Urist McHero to his daughter in the hopes of bringing him into the clan, as well as to make sure his daughter marries someone worthy (in his mind).

In that case, the idea of a House rather than a Clan fits it better. "Clans" have a stronger sense of family and genetics/lineage, a House is more flexible.

Maybe that is a better word to use.

Oh god this is scaring me, "Houses" I'm thinking of "game of thrones.":-\

But besides that I would like this, making legends better one more relation at a time.

odd, my connotations are the complete opposite. Clans are a closely knit tribe and houses are an extended family. Ignoring those; I'd have clans for dwarves, houses for humans, tribes for orcs, castes for kobalds, and I've got no idea what to use for elves.

See, in Scotland I think the idea of family was stronger within a sept of a major clan like, say, the MacDonalds of Glencoe whilst the MacDonalds as a whole would not have a very strong sense of family because the clan was so large. These clansmen were very conscious of their genetic links to one another. There were septs within clans which could be adopted from other clans, such as the MacCoshes (I think, I'm probably incredibly wrong) who joined the Gordons but septs of clans were like extended families in many ways.

I just thought that the idea of a House was quite ambiguous because it could imply a "house" in the literal sense, like a family or people who live together, or it could imply a group of nobles/dwarves traditionally bound by familial links but still open to outsiders. If you think about it, you don't have to be related to the occupants of a house to live in one with a family.

I suppose they both mean very similar things. House seems more Dwarven though, the word "clan" to me would imply something much more tribal and... I don't want to say barbaric or savage or whatever, but you get the picture. I think of a chieftan with subjects who live on his land and pay tribute to him and fight his battles.
