I actually always thought coroner was a non-elected position that you had to get through, y'know, qualifications and the respect of your peers in the field.

This is a kinda scary revelation.

I've never seen 'coroner' on a ballot before. It would be slightly terrifying if every candidate on the ballot for 'coroner' were untrained laymen with zero qualifications.

All the other local elected offices, even sheriff, doesn't have hard qualifications that I can think of.

Coroner is an elected position in some places, but if you don't know what you're doing you'll probably be impeached or something.

In my state a coroner can arrest people for homicide or crimes committed in the pursuit of homicide, and may also hold people in contempt of court for not complying with an inquest. The coroner is also allowed to be sheriff if none is elected at the time.

They can also issue arrest and witness warrants and set bail.

Come to think of it, NC coroners are horribly overpowered.

Jesus, they have arrest powers and can set out arrest warrents, even? They can be sheriff even? It makes sense, but only if they knew what the hell they were doing, independant of a vote. I'd think there'd need to be a law saying they'd have to be a doctor or have gone through some sort of training, at least.

I've noticed the Representative race here locally has very much avoided mentioning party names in any of the ads. The ads are all attack ads as well, and none of the attacks are at specific policy issues. Most of it tends to be claims of corruption, non-attendance at congress, and ties to Obama. (Yes, very republican part of the country here, but apparently both sides have ties to Obama if you're to believe the ads.) I don't' even know what either candidate stands for at this point.

DKI Jakarta (Jakarta Capital Region), Indonesia: The current mayor of Surakarta, Jokowi, has just been elected new head of DKI Jakarta, in a landslide victory against our current government. However, strangely enough, Jokowi is supported by the PDI-P (Democratic Party of Indonesia-Struggle), a party infamous for being very aggressive and rude, with Jokowi is well known as a very calm man who is very level-headed. On the other side of things, the current party in power of the executive branch, the PD, (Democratic Party)is in support of the current governor, who is rather aggressive in his actions. This has lead to a very...calming situation here in Indonesia, with both parties waiting for one-another to make the next move.

What really gets me is how we elect Judges. I realize this is probably pretty common practice in the US, but it's difficult to make a meaningful distinction between two candidates when all you know is their name and face that've been plastered on billboards all over town.

How convenient that this thread shows up now, since it's local elections season in Bosnia. Anyway, Mirad Hadziahmetovic, candidate for mayor of Zenica, was suspended because he put porn on his official website to attract more voters.

Found a source in English. I didn't know about the part where there's a short video of him after every clip, this just makes it ridiculously creepy.

Anyway, to his credit, he's fairly progressive as there were three categories of porn clips: clips that the mayor likes, clips for girls and gays, clips for guys and lesbos (pardon my language, I'm just sticking to an accurate translation).

Got my vote as well. :D

I'm 100% serious that I'd vote for anyone who advertises with porn (unless it's the violent stuff).

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I should certainly hope he's progressive, hosting porn clips on your election site when you're a "family values" type would be kind of a bad idea.

Do you have "family values" types in mainstream Bosnian politics?

Wales, UK

So, it turns out that the current Conservative UK government had a hand in the Summer GCSE results. There are nationwide political overtones and complications here, but basically the grade boundaries were moved half way through the 2 year teaching period for the English GCSE, with no-one other than the exam boards being party to this knowledge. The end result of this was record low results, where pupils who were under the impression they were at a C grade or above being dropped below to a D or worse. Unsuprisingly when this "invisible moving of the goalposts" came out people were pissed. In England, the goverment body responsible for education refused to back down. In Wales, education is a devolved issue, and our education minister (Labour, hence the political overtones) ordered a re-grade, not happy that decisions made by someone in a different country and part of a different political party affected performance in Wales. This means that pupils in Wales have had thier course graded in the original manner, scoring better marks for the same work in a key qualification compared to school pupils over the border. Parties on both sides (Welsh Assembly, Labour Majority vs. Conservative Govt in Westminster) are already slinging mud at each other and squaring up for a fight over national ideals and political affiliation. This is a big deal as its the first real time the Welsh Assembly has taken a direction that has brought it into open and direct conflict with Westminster. It probably wont be the last.

Not really. People campaign either on protecting their ethnicity from the local majority, or economic issues.

In other news Dalton McGuinty and the Teacher's Unions have fallen out, which is quite surprising because traditionally McGuinty and the unions engaged in ritual fellatio with each other, helping give him two majority governments in a row.

I have an uncle who lives in the only federal NDP riding in the province.

As soon as you cross the border, the colours get kind of muted and there's a strange hush in the air. It's weird.
