I read up on it a little bit more, and he did win, and he did give a couple of barrels of beer to wherever. Also, the people needed to provide proof in the form of a picture (on their smartphone). I'm pretty sure it's legal to tell other people who you voted for, so that probably includes taking a picture of it and showing it to the mayor to get a pint.

And then there's the fact that it was on his personal facebook, about an hour or so before the elections.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

If he does go through with it, he'll probably win the next election even if he gets kicked out of this one.

It's even more fun now that I read it.

That winning politician was from our local far-right party. Now, since this is Belgium, all elections are proportional, so the 3 regulars parties came together to make a coalition (despite not being the firt party). Now, another politician, from a fifth party attacked the far-right guy to have new elections and hopefully get elected. And of course, the 3 parties that are now leading the city don't want that.
