Nope definately the trees

Think about it logically. Trees hate everything that walks. Elves walk.
Therefore it would stand to reason that Trees hate Elves.
But they cannot fight Elves like they fight Dwarves and Humans. With those two, at least they know their apathy means total destruction. But with the Elves, they cannot fight back without destroying themselves. So they have to live with the constant parasite as opposed to a consumer. Much like a goblin shaving a Dwarf's beard to make Dwarf fur thongs, the Elves shear entire limbs from trees to make their crafts.
It is one thing to kill your enemy, it is another to shame them.

I do think you are right, and since the Trees can live for centuries they remember the first tree that was felled, so none but the werebeasts and vampires remember it aside from the Trees themselves.
