Am I stupid or is is just another stupid bug?
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:35:04 am »

Hey everyone,

I've just started an entirely new fortress and I ran into a problem. My dwarves won't chop down trees or mine!
I've got a pick and two axes and all my dwarves have either mining or woodcutting enabled.

Is there some weird setting I could have missed or is it just another bug?

I swear, I love this game, but sometimes it just makes me want to throw my PC out the window.

Did you ask them to mine an acceptable accessible area?
Did you give them militaty duties?

Make wooden training axes and try again.
Try channeling into the ground one tile.

no military, already had training axes and the site is definitely accessible.

When trying the channel something interesting happened, the square started blinking, indicating the job was active, but nobody actually picked up a pick to do the work...

Can you give us a screenshot of the area you are trying to mine/chop in?
If you try to channel directly near your wagon (I'm assuming you just started this fort), are the dwarves still not able to do it?

This is not really a common problem, so I doubt it's bug, but you never know.  Can you give a bit more information?  Are your dwarves otherwise idle or busy?  Do you have burrows enabled?  It's possible you just need to wait for the one who owns the pick to get off break or finish his other jobs.

Are you sure that you've designated the dig and cutting sites properly?  Sometimes new players get confused e.g., try to designate impossible up&down stairs on the world's surface rather than down stairs, but i don't know how one would mess up a tree cutting designation :)  Other than a simple typo of course.  And it sounds like from your post you have had forts in the past so you know what you're doing on the basics.  Hmm.

Well, you have 7 dwarves and only 3 tools, so... not everyone can participate.  Whoever actually has the pick is the only one who can mine.  If that dwarf is doing something else, you will not get any mining done.

What does the 'u'nits list say everyone is doing, especially the one with the pick?

Blinking yellow, or just blinking from the "channeling designated" tile to the normal one? If the latter, the job has not been chosen yet.

Have you unpaused? Do any dwarves have the mining labor active? Have they gotten the picks yet?

Is there a werewolf chasing them?  Jobs won't get done, if they are fleeing.  In worst case scenario, abandon and reembark, with 7 tools.

Oh yeah, I should have said with all this, I'm not new to DF. I've been playing for many many hours, never had a problem with this before.

I currently have 7 Idlers, I can post a screen if you like.

This is the screen. As you can see the mining site is (should be?) accessible, the stockpile shows one pick and two axes and there are 7 Idlers.

Anyway, I think I'll just make a new world and see how that works. I've been the victim of more of these kinds of bugs before.

Do their labors allow mining/woodcutting? By default, only hauling jobs (hauling everything) and caretaking jobs are allowed, you have to manually allow some jobs to be done, if dwarf in question has no skillpoints in that area. To do that:

v (move cursor to nearest dwarf) -> p -> l (L not i), make sure that "mining" and "woodcutting"(sub labor under "woodworking" labor list) labors are bright white.

Example:

In this case mining and hauling jobs are allowed and light gray in farming means that some of the farming jobs are allowed for dwarf in question.

---------

Also make sure that dwarves are allowed gather stuff from outside and that you don't have burrows or some new fancy stuffs enabled.

That workstation built with the 3 pieces of wood, found after destroying the embark cart?  Or was it chopped down?  There is blood on that ramp and a D, around.  What is that D?  A giant Dingo?  A giant Dingo would cause issues with jobs and tasks, certainly.

Please post the embark profile, for this embark.  Curious of it.  Here is mine, as an example..
