We have zero credits, so it's not a time to look for something
Even hiring crew is problematic

Anyway, we need
1) Fusion generator specialist. Guy that know how those work, how to get maximum out of them and how to fix them
2) Navigator. Guys that know sector well are useful, guys that now how to use gravitational slingshots and save fuel\time too
3) Coders, we need to modify that open source cargo ship OS to suit our needs better. We have one in our crew (unfortunately player is gone) But more is better
4)Metalworkers  - we are going to make that ammo and maybe plates but we lack specialists

I think this is pretty close to what I already do.

You send some people towards the local law enforcement office to check if the files are ready, but find that they're not. Ah, the Joys of buraucracy.

On the ship, everything is calm. Most of the people have gone offboard to enjoy the last bit of civilization before they go to the outer rim, but not everyone. In one of the cargo bays some people are messing around with the Duranim plates, checking their internal structure, which turns out to be disappointingly simple. They're just solid plates made from a basic alloy, as far as you can see. Attempts to reproduce them are as us such mostly unsuccesfull, resulting only in a few more hull plates made from compressed scrap.Nevertheless, these are installed around the more vulnerable cargo.

Recruitment is hard. The spaceport is almost completely abandonned with nothing happening, and no one looking for a job. It's surely is a sad thing. There's a single merchant vessel, and of course the pub, but nobody is interested.

After a few days the colony ship has finished it's bussiness planetside, and you depart again. Most of the voyage is boring and monotonous, and the days start to blurr. Jump point after jump point is passed, and several days pass without seeing another vessel. Most of the systems you pass are waypoint sectors, serving no other purposing than lieing on the route to go from one part of space to another.

It's on the Eleventh day of the flight that something finally breaks the monotomy of the endless void of space. Halfway between 2 jump points, in a sector that used to be a military outpost during the war, but which sole planet was now a radioactive wasteland, drifted a ship. Our limited database was capable of quickly identifying it as a "Hershell" class luxury liner, one of the larger ships of it's type. With it's length of slightly over 200 meters, and a total capacity of more than 500 passengers, it was the transport ship for the higher classes. At least, that was what it was 50 years ago, when the last liner ship left the orbital drydocks. What's it doing here is a mystery for you, but the heatsensors do seem to indicate that the lifesupport and other vital systems are still running. It's hard to get a clear fix on the ship, as radiation appears to interfere with the sensors. This is in itself a strange thing, as you're more than far enough from the planet that you shouldn't be affected.

All this is highly suspicious... Looks like the ship itself is radioactive and we have no equipment to board it in that case...

I think we should start by trying to contact, maybe there are someone alive or AI system that can answer

Agreed.

George brushes up on treating radiation sickness.

the spacesuits DO block radiation, right?

if so, set up a irradiation chamber in a cargo hold, send me and a few others in a ship to check it out. with guns.

No, they don't. Maybe mechanical one does but even it is not designed for that job

It's not radiation-PROOF, but it can fake it in normal operations.

It's not a trivial task to defend against radiation. while they  offer some protection, they aren't designed for high radiation situations, they are short-term emergency spacesuits.

Oh, and you called NASA morons, modern space suits do not offer enough radiation protections to survive a solar flare

Comparing "fried by radiation" to "slightly less fried by radiation," it's effectively none.
