Are "mysterious crates" common, or did these just not have normal markings on them?

Did you find what was in said crates yet?
They are simple, smooth, airsealed  cubic metal boxes. A small cousin of the common cargo container. It's designed to survive long trecks in the often unpressurized cargo hold of a massive cargo ship. These things don't have the required identification marks and such, so you have no idea what is in them.

Neither have I, so I'll just make something new up.

You hand over the prisoners, which goes without any problems. The MMC hands over the funds in return. You spend the rest of the day in the harbour, waiting for your crewmate to be released from hospital. In addition, you also pick up some civilians. While they won't pay much, it's something at least. You got a preacher, a doctor, an MMC official and 2 newly weds, which are apparently exploring the galaxy.

Without further addo, you lock the cargo bays, arm the fighters, load the missiles, and set course for the Cor Carioli spaceports. The Journey is quick and uneventfull, only interupted by a quick moment of curiosity in which you send a crawler droid to open the boxes. These turn out to be varied in contents. One contains high quality rations(enough to last a single person a year), the other some medicine (including some pretty advanced stuff, such as an universal antibioticum*), the next 2 contain seeds, and the fifth is filled with nuclear fuel rods. These rods are often used to power smal fission reactors, which can provide reliable power to a small settlement for a duration of up to 30 years.

The Cor Cariolo shipyards themselves are magnificent. They're a large complex of orbital shipyards above all 3 inhabited planets in the sector, and are fill to the brim with activity. Ships are being docked, refit and scuttled 24/24 , and due to it's location it's also a center for commerce. Due to your ships size you're assigned docking to the civilian part of the military docks and there waits you another suprise. The docks are almost abandonned save for a few corvettes which are completely dominated by the Unity, an enormius Alliance dreadnought. With a length of more than 1.6 kilometers, and a compliment of guns and other weaponry that makes your ship pale in comparison it's extremely impressive to behold, though it's worrying to see such a large ship in these surroundings.

Nevertheless, you dock the ship(the passengers will stay on board till their passports have been approved by the local administration, which shouldn't be long. They're also waiting for the first shuttle to their destination, whatever it might be.)

sell the specal med, fuel rods, food and seeds and get some cheaper food, along with computer assistance for sensors. also fix the ship, re-arm the weapons and upgrade the jump drive. and see how much money is left.

Would my character realise that?
((I wasn't actually going to say it.  It would have been in quotes if I did.  It was just a joke, Ebbor said he had watched Firefly, I was wondering if he had seen it.  I'll put double quotes if I'm going to do that from now on.))
Sell everything in the crates except for the medical supplies we can actually use, and the fuel rods.

I agree, we don't need the fuel rods. And we can make do without the medical stuff as well since we don't have a medbay!

Sell off everything in the crates as well as the minerals. Look for available jobs that sound in our range.

I think we should repair a reactor, the secondary jump capacitors and other repairs can wait until we find out how much money we get from selling our stuff.

It's a bit too early to sell anything before we know the prices... Another reason not to sell - it's obiviously from a robbed colonyship\supplyship and it's suspicious to sell it (And is it legal to sell nuclear materials? I doubt it. It's a bit too easy to turn fuel rods into nuclear weapons) And we definitely need the rations and medicines

I want to see in

Buy list -
1) medium sized lasers\railguns\whatever for our turrets
2) small sized guns for our fighters
3) Reactor(s) capable of working on the fuel rods ( I dislike radiation as it may end very badly... But It's an opportunity to solve some of our energy problems)
4) Electronics producing equipment
5) Hull platings producing equipment
6) Medical equipment
7) Ship controlling software
8) automated Point defence turrets ai\hardware ( I think machine should be better for shooting down the missiles)
9) Anti boarding turrets (inside ship)
10) Spacesuits
11) Cheap civilian reactors\engines\jumpcapcitors\jump control. It may be a better temporary solution to replace  than to repair.
12) rechargeable batteries (something that can be used to unload energy once for battle and recharged between the battles by reactors)

Sell list
1) The jumpcore
2) The minerals
3) All our small crafts
4) Damaged reactor
5) Spacesuits

Repair\conversion list
1) Lasers repair
2) Converting one cargo bay into a workshop
3) Converting one docking place in cargo bay
4) Converting one 20 people chamber in a med bay
5) Converting one 4 people chamber in a comfortable\luxurious 2 people chamber
6) Converting docking place\cargo bay into an auxiliary reactor room
7) various Fighters repair\upgrading
8) Repainting Salvation (It may be useful to not look like from scrapyard to find better jobs)

Hire list
1) Engineers
2) Marines
3) Fighter pilots (preferably with their own crafts)
_______________________
Guys, request your own buy list, I am sure 10ebbor10 can't predict anything we may be interested in. Then we will decide

As for what we need, I'd go

Patching the holes + 1 reactor + 1 main engine + fix our lasers + at least one more turret.... And we are short on funds to buy all that... And I want madbay\workshop\jumpcapacitor in addition.... Hope we can find a buyer for the jumpcore and minerals BTW did we get the payment from the passengers?

While others care about the ship, Diana spend her time hanging with military in local bars looking for rumors and opportunities. She will happily brag about the fight with pirate frigates (slightly improve the real story by making frigates better armed and armored then they were and omitting the part when salvation ran away from pirate reinforcements)
