So I didn't quite follow the discussion, but I'm just going to throw some numbers around.

A cargoship the size of your Cruiser can easily store 20.000 cargo units,  or up to 50.000 if they abandonned the aerodynamic shape needed for in athmosphere travel.
None of these are currently present in your sector. The biggest are 20.000 cargo ships.

On the main line, which is a series of connected High tech Rapid jump beacons, and also marks the end of the sector, you can find so called Jump containers. These have no engines, only a jumpdrive. Often they are automated as well. The cargo capacity of these is enormous, going as high as 100.000 or more cargo units.

As for selling booze to the Miners. I believe drinking alcohol when using heavy machinery is not encouraged. Asteroid mining systems are counted as heavy machinere. Not saying you can't do it, but it won't really be legal. I do approve of the RP part, and will try to implement that. As for using them as rocket fuel, you'd need an oxidizer of some kind for it to work in space.

It would be nice  to talk about our long term goals.

Currently I see 3 possible goals

1) Profit, profit, profit
2) Make the universe better place
3) Use our cruiser as a base to create some kind of fleet and make us politically important and powerful

As for my character it's mainly 1 with little 2

OOC, I'd like #3, because it's a fun direction

Of course, it would just be good to have nice things.  How much would the parts for a still cost?

...Hm, for booze smuggling weapons would be a plus and we could be Space All Capone, but we'd be breaking the law which is bad. So let's consider other options. Any hibernating, cute, fast-breeding animals we could buy fairly cheap? Feed a few, let them breed, get them into hibernation, sell for profit to lonely asteroid miners.

Depends on the animal. Especially if we're not limited to Terran species. A creature living in a habitat with, say, a month of monsoon and blooming plants followed by years of drought and hard times might hibernate during the hard times and reproduce quickly during that time. Sky's the limit.

Why not cats?
While the others breed fast for a mammal and are easy to keep, they still take at least a month or two to mature and don't hibernate... do we have some sort of cryostorage we could put the critters into while we transport them?

We may use some weird alien creature if they available but that equals to more problems. And I don't believe that there are much demand  for such goods

Can't we start discussing something more urgent and practical?
Animal farm in space is so unpractical that it's not even funny

Besides we may start trading when we will not spend majority of our money on repairs and upgrades. As for not using empty cargo space, it's main usage - store the loot! Just imagine, our cargo bays are full with goods, we fight with pirates, win a tough fight, get a lot of good loot and.... leave it because our cargo bays are overfilled with crates

You never know...It doesn't hurt to ask. Cryostorage that works on humans should work on non-humans without much modification.

Well, there's a few possibilities. One, don't look for trouble. How many pirates will specifically target an armed cruiser for looting? Two, leave some cargo space open. Three, commandeer the pirates' ship. Four, tie it to the outside or something. It's not like it'll pick up space barnacles...

I think he doesn't want cats because of what we've all learned in Dwarf Fortress...

Which reminds me, UK, there's more than one way to skin a cat.  Sure, a lot of space games are combat based, but they don't have to be.  You don't want to be fighting for a living.  You want profit.  Fighting is not very profitable.  There is way too much risk for the little bit of reward.
Oh, sure, we may pick up a good haul, but we'd have to be pirates to do it.  Why, you ask?  Because no pirate is going to attack us if they've got bays over-flowing with loot.  They will get the fuck out of there.  Because, UK, believe it or not people are scared of death.  Very, very scared of death.  Only way fighting will be profitable will be if we attack merchants, who will have escort ships. 
And you want to do that empire thing, right?  Because that does sound really, really cool to me too.  But, we have to do it smart.  We want to get money first.
Just forget, for a moment, that this is based off of a fighting game.  Remember, that this is an open game.  We can do literally anything.  Unless it's ridiculously stupid, or horrible, in which case Ebbor will tell us. 
So just calm down with the combat for a sec.  We don't need to fight.  We can, and we probably will have to, but we don't need to.  And we don't really want to, because it is much better safe than sorry.

Not quite, parts of pirate ships is a haul itself. Look at our last loot, if we sell all that we got, it's worth quite a lot.  I suspect that we need months of trinkets trade to achieve this.  Now imagine a harder fight, with several pirate ships... We will easily fill cargo bays with their remains.

As I said earlier - let's dock, sell cruiser and find absolutely safe jobs on station. Cruiser is made for fighting and it can fight much more effectively and profitably then doing anything else

Fighting doesn't mean going into the fight - escorting is also a fighting even if we know that we'll scare all potential pirates away. We get a nice payment because merchants like to be escorted by cruiser, because we have guns. Guns that are useless in trinkets trading

2. Decent point, but we need to compare it to potential trading profits, whether with the Salvation or with some other ship we trade her in for.
3. Hey, we discarded the booze idea when we discovered it would be illegal. Aside from a quip from me about being space Al Capone.
4. Hey, there's more options than "Escort, Bounty Hunt, and Otherwise Fight" and "Sell ship, abandon game." We could ship goods to dangerous or pirate-ridden areas, or sell our current ship for one better suited for safe work.

George will jokingly suggest spacing anyone who insists on a duality of dangerous missions or retiring again.

Selling Salvation is a bad idea, because it's quite hard to buy military ship. + We need a special license to sell missile launchers, surely you need a license to sell the whole cruiser

I dislike not the attempt to find side profits, I dislike ridiculous ones that have no synergy with our ship's strengths, weaknesses and needs

You want ideas about non-combat  sources of profit? OK

1) Create high quality space hospital, everyone needs medical aid, especially in isolated places, and we need it for our crew
2) Metal furnace - it's energy-heavy thing, but we have reactors that are useless in non combat situations, may find a use for it.
3) Drone fighters production : we may use them both for sale  and our own use as cheap cannonfodders
4) Missiles, railgun ammo, hull-plates, that what we need always.
5) Some kind of food synthesizer, again a way to use for reactors and we always need food and may sell it for a nice profit in some situations
6) Small arms manufacture , may be illegal, but so profitable, and we need it for boarding\defending
7) Passenger cabins.  Surely many rich passengers will be ready to pay for a safe passage in a fast armored cruiser. And pay a lot. If not - comfort for crew isn't a bad thing

1. Not as many lethal ones as mercenary work, especially by being a tough target for pirates.

2. How can you be certain?

4. If we sold Salvation, we wouldn't be buying a military ship, we'd be buying a trader or something.

5. Those sound good...I wonder how much space we could add, how easily, and how much it would impact performance? It would make sense to smelt our own metal for many of those, and...well, they all sound like good ideas to use our limited space for. Nice and versatile.
