Current versions of selfmodifying software, optimistically called artificial intelligence by some, are, while capable of adapting themselves to certain situations still limited by their human programming. We believe that we remove this limit by providing the software with a simulation of it's surroundings and parts of itself, in which it can test out variations of it's own programming. While certainly more computer inefficient, this method of artificial selection allows the program to evolve freely, whitout risking corruption of the data structures.
-James C. Babbage, On the origin of intelligence by means of Artificial selection, Research paper of the Euclides university, Declassified in the year 5 (CdC)
A class A AI is identified by a complete failure of all safeguards and human preservation directives. Since this is impossible without human intervention, these AI's are often found in compagnion of pirates or other criminals. They are extremely dangerous, as evidenced by the New Thebe disaster. Only 39 of these AI's have survived to this day, and they should be dealt with extreme prejudice. Open fire on sight, don't give quarter to their allies.
Orders are to terminate.

Salvation Bridge: 12.056.08.13.16:34:59 / Just after half past four on the 13
the of August, 77 years after the end of the war and the reunification of the Rim with the core worlds.
Everyone sighs with reliefs as Salvation makes it's way from the melting remains of the luxury liner. In total, the mission took less than an hour, but in an hour lot's of things can happen. The constant threats from the Savionosaurs, combined with a slightly mad, and uncooporative AI and overloading reactor made for a dangerous situation. Nevertheless, the team managed to navigate the entire ship with relative ease, lifted the quarantine from the bridge and even brought back the AI core, as well as the ship's log and the bridge's safe. After that they fought their way back to the nearest airlock, and managed to get out.
The ship's logs revealed an interesting tale. Some time, about 3 weeks back, the main computer failed completely, burned out by a unexplained power surge. The AI appears to have come on board 3 days later. From the comm logs you can make up that it volunteered to serve as a replacement in exchange for a free ride. However, 11 days ago disaster struck. The main jump core, which in hindsight was probably responsible for the first power surge, failed spectaculary, heavily damaging the reactors. The remaining power was redirected towards radiation shielding. Quite probably this was when the Avionosaurs escaped their electronically contained cells, and started to kill the crew. A quarantine was declared, but the Avionosaurs were relentless, killing everybody on board. The once you found were already weakened by hunger. (Avionosaurs are a Genetically modified Organism, and will only attack/eat living, warmblooded prey. Your spacesuits probably confused them).
The AI was put in an isulated capsule inside the cargo hold, away from all important ship system. With this problem resolved, the Salvation continued it's journey to the outer rim. While most sectors are still abandonned, devastated by the war they lost here 80 years ago, you begin seeing the first signs of lifes. New terraforming projects have been set up, defense and warning beacons secure primitive orbital facilities, and some sectors even posses a small militia. A week later you reach your final destination. The central hub of the Rim colonies and the former capital system of one of the larger separatist colony movements. Despite the recent boom of the colonisation movement, the damage wrought by the war is still visible, and the horror of the war will never be forgotten by it's inhabitants.
The system, officially called Prodistum-23, but more commonly known as Grenard's demise is but a small one. Amongst a feeble dwarf star 2 gas giants orbit. The outermost has but one inhabitated moon, New Athena. It was the former home of the military academy and the staging place of the fleet. Currently, most of the planet is in ruin, it's once precious academy and once reknowned university still suffering from the harsh Alliance penalties. Around the other Gasgaint orbits a plethora of inhabited and partly terraformed moons. However, theirs is a dreadfull tale. Formerly the richest and most developped of the outer colonies, now it's barren, shattered surface serves only to remind the local people of the price and the danger of betrayal. Closer to the sun orbits a strange planet, made of diamonds. It's named Midnight, and local myths says that anyone who set food on it died violently.
(The complete tale of New Thebe will be for another day. This will be the last stop before you drop of the colonists. Also, Christmas gifts)

The supply ship that normally provides food and other supplies to a number of colonies in the outer rim has never arrived. In order to prevent an impeding food shortage, the Jaltan colonies have decided to travel to the inner systems (or as close as you can get within a reasonable timeframe) in order to oversee the deliverance of supplies themselves. They know need someone to take the supplies back to their colonies.
The Oddysea coorporation is willing to give a large bounty to whomever is willing to look for their lost Jumpship Surveyor, which is apparently lost somewhere beyond the known systems. The last message dates back to 2 weeks ago, and seems to indicate a problem with their primary jump drive. (Message delivered by partly fragmented Jump drone*)
Many traditionall shipping compagnies have refused to do cargo runs towards planets near the Quarantined zone, fearing that another increase of the Quarantine might lock them in. As such, the planets near the zone are undersupplied, and many people are trying to leave.
There's still the investigation of the station near the Galven system.
A colony ship heading for the outer rim is trying to buy some cheap protection. They haven't got much, and their ship is completely undefended, and largely unarmored.
An archeology site near the Galven system has gone silent. Their main benefactor would like you to check up on them, to see if everything's alright.
-Inner scrapyard: [Illegal to be here]
-Outer scrapyard: A more dangerous place, since ships are actively dumped here and the automated droid patrols make harvesting harder [Illegal to be here]
-Scrapyard borders: Sometimes scrap floats outside of the scrapyard, allowing everyone nearby free pickings.
-Galven III orbital habitation station: The majority of this sector resides here, or on the planet below. Due to the risk of an epidemic and a paranoid governement, planet acces is strongly limited, hence the creation of the orbital hub.
-Galven III Trade hub: This station includes a repair station, and has some governement officials. You probably could get your ship registered here.

A large Alliance Cruiser, dating back to the war. Modified and refitted by the crew. The ship's painted in light blue, with several spots and stripes added to aid in visual deception. There are several fake spots on the wings, and stripes to make the ship appear longer. The Engines are painted in a blue/white combination, matching the color of the engine exhaust(in space, in the air it's quite obvious if the engines are on or not). The top bridge is flanked by 2 stars, painted in orange and black. On the sides, the name of the ship is painted in big friendly letters.

If you want an action executed by the crew, just type and bold it. If you want it to be done by your character, please explicitedly state so, and use bold +Italics.
Character actions might be ignored during conflicts or for secret GM reasons.
Anyway, going to list combat modifiers just because I can. These are not used in the previous encounter, because the system wasn't ready. These can be subject to additional modifiers from player actions.

...ebbor, how common are AIs? Common enough that it's completely normal for an old cruise ship to have one and a sign of our poverty that we don't, rarer than gold, somewhere in between?
Common enough that everyone knows they exist, but incredibly rare. This is probably the first one you see in your lives.
Do note that there's a difference between an AGI (artificial general intelligence) and just a generic AI. The first has a personality, and is pretty much equivalent to humans, while the second is an automated quasi intelligent program which can improve itself.
Here some short descriptions on how the weaponry you posses works, and it's usefullness.
Standard sidearm: (whatever you want it to be.)
(Upgraded) Laser blasters: Simple and cheap weaponry. Uses a chemical reaction to create a somewhat powerfull laser. Batteries last long and can be recharged. Sadly, due to cheap lenses and a fairly weak laser, these are neither accurate nor particulary deadly.
Heavy welder: Modified welding instrument. Uses a heavy, but portable chemical power source, to create a glob of plasma and ionized air and often some metal, which it slings at the target. Reloading is fairly complicated, and has to happen after every shot. Quite deadly, especially when used in pressurized environements.
Laser welder: Stronger version of the laser blaster, normally used for welding. Uses a stronger laser and slightly more accurate lenses, making it a bit more dangerous.
Pistol: Similairy to contemporary pistols, but with modified ammuntion to work in vacuum. Note: Barrel warns up rapidly after repeated fire in vacuum.
