XKCD - Explore the world
« on: September 19, 2012, 08:34:19 am »

While I assume many of you have already seen it, but it deserves to be posted and spread across the internet.
And since we don't seem to have an active XKCD thread, I am making this one.

Click and drag

At first it seems the ordinary xkcd strip, but try doing what the title says...
and don't forget to pay attention to details! it is easy to see that much effort went into its creation.
I don't want to say more because I don't want to spoil it for readers, but I consider this to be a work of art. Really, check it.

beyond that, I can only say, good exploration. and beware of carpal tunnel syndrome.
and if you find interesting things, please spoiler them! we don't want to ruin anyone's fun, right? ;)
( and trust me, there are enough things to see to keep you busy for a while)

Ah good, I was wondering whether to post something myself.

I've got a couple of computers in front of me, one I scrolled off to the right[1], and one I scrolled off to the left (almost immediately up, and over, and beyond) and then started exploring the tunnels below a desert island[2], but I can't remember if I still have to explore another tunnel, somewhere below the X-Wing[3].  (I must admit, I first thought the Lemonade Salesman was a Death Star Laser Gunnery Officer.)

(You know, it's obvious that I could just be making the above up, but I aint.)

And if/when I reach the edge/wrap-around point, I'm going to have a look high in the sky and down into the depths (again!) because you just know Mr Monroe isn't likely to miss a trick like that...

[1] Currently I'm heading up some anchored guylines that I think will go to a giant kite, the way that they're splaying, already been past a few bridges and masts and things.

[2] I say "started", I'm way beyond the cavern with the tree in it, if anyone else has wandered that way.

[3] But if/when I get to the 'end' of this particular branch I'm going to head up-left a lot and see if I hit the vertical first or the surface, so's I can travel westwards of the island with the shaft in it.

Poor X-Wing pilot, not knowing that the exit's too narrow for it to get out.

Yeah the tunnels messed up my sense of directions.

Edit: Reached the right most part. There are plenty of references about the something above but there aren't enough landmarks to know when you've stopped.

Your two guys, Andrea, yup, I'm still exploring off to the right of them, underground, somewhere around the Minecraft reference...  I'm getting a perpetual load on an image, though, at the moment.  A tunnel ends in a sharp edge, all black beyond, I think there needs to be more, indeed I've looked at the image I need on another computer[1], outside of the comic environment.

The other (this) computer, where I'm scrolling right, keeps on crashing an unrelated program, as I move.  Strange.  Probably a memory leak.  (Browser's fault, or OS's, not page's.)

[1] I had half expected a server-side refusal, however.  I think (based on what I learnt without even trying) that it'll be relatively trivial to actually 'rip' the entire world image to my HDD, but out of respect for Randall I'm refraining from that, even though he's not made the trivial effort needed to stop me doing it (or at least slow me down).

I went along the ground (occasionally climbing up the tall structures) all the way to the right. I was hoping it'd loop around, but it just ended. Now I'll have to refresh and go the other way.

Has anyone constructed the entire image and stitched it together? I'd love to just take a look at the whole thing.

Nevermind, found it.

I think one of the trees was from a Fleetwood Mac album cover.
