We get ftl. It may not be affordable, for now it may only be the province of governments and possibly big business, but it's there, and it's been announced to the world whether anyone likes it or not. What would you do? What would the world do?

I'd visit my parents more often.  I'm apparently too lazy for a 3.5 hour bus ride.  A 3.5 second FTL drive and I might be able to work up the effort to say hi.

I have significant doubt I would be using it personally.  It's not likely to be affordable to individuals for a long time after it becomes possible, and I have no business in space, much less deep space. 

Otherwise, it would probably just be a curiosity for a while, then used for scientific purposes for some time yet.  Even if FTL travel was cheap, it would take some time before it could be useful for anything, since our space craft aren't even reliable and cheap enough for things like star tourism, much less deep space construction.
