Where's the king?
« on: September 18, 2012, 08:19:43 am »

My fortress just became a mountainhome, but the king hasn't arrived. His entourage did, three soldiers and one farmer. But no king anywhere, and yes I checked every corpse/grave/etc. I've waited for a whole season already, is it possible that he's just delayed somehow or just bugged?

maybe you've no king. This happenned earlier when you civ was completely dead and all your migrants were all conjured from thin air. Did you haev any historical migrants before in this fort? Vampires or ssomeone with Tracking skill?

My civ is very much alive, caravans, liaisons, vampires, historical figures and the civilization screen shows that my civ has a king. There's also a bunch of artisrty about him, and one migrant was his cousin or something. Maybe he arrives after the next caravan, since I still have that trade agreement with the former mountainhome, which usually disappears once the monarch arrives, right?

IDK about that really, I always had my kings arrive with their entourage and apart from caravans or regular migrant vawes. If your king is present in the 'c' screen he should certainly come unless something has gone buggy.

Had you actually satisfied the conditions for Becoming the Capital (i.e. being a Metropolis and having the necessary Architecture and Offerings)?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Of course, my game even announced that the king arrived, but he didn't. My fortress is marked as a mountainhome, but the outpost liaison's trade agreement is still active. It' winter soon, so maybe once the agreement expires the king hauls his ass to my fort.

Might it be so that your king is not a dwarf and thus he's not listed under  'citizens', but rather under 'others' or 'livestock', wherever the kings go?

When I had an elven king he just stood on the edge of the map for a long wile until he got killed, after that his entourage turned up.
Is anyone still standing around on the map edge where he arrived, blocking his arrival?

Also bear in mind when the king dies their corpse is not listed as a king.

Nish Frillcoister doesn't show up on any lists, not dead or missing, no combat log entries, etc. Maybe he was orginally trying to path in through the caverns? Is that possible? Because I've kept them sealed for quite a while.

I once had the same happening to me, entourage arriving without a king. When I checked the borders of the map I discovered a strange pile of high-value (not entirely useful) equipment on one of the edge tiles but no corpse or other signs of a battle. The equipment seemed to belong to a single person...like a king disappearing on the moment of arrival on the map.

That equipment likely belonged to the entourage - 4 legendary soldiers of varying types (back in 40d, always Axe Lords), all wearing superior quality gear. The problem is that those 4 soldiers arrive in Military mode (back in 40d they were Royal Guards), but since they don't belong to a squad (and thus have no orders) they immediately revert to civilian status and try to put away their gear, and if there's no stockpile space they'll just drop it on the ground right there.

There should have been a body in my screen if that happened. But still that seems pretty likely.
