Colonist Log - Gene Lawrence

Something's hit our water line again. The thing isn't defended, but damnit we didn't realize Mars would be swarming with hostile aliens! Alpha Squad deploys again, to safeguard the future of the colony. I really wish we could re-establish communications with Earth... I have family back home and I'd like to see them again one day. I wonder what's going on back home anyway...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Beastmen again. They're pretty stupid. They kept walking in even though we had a superior position and we took them out pretty easily. Ute got shot up by those stinger pistols they have... I wonder if our lab techs can figure them out so we can use them?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We're running desperately low on ammunition here, even what the Reticulans brought us is running out pretty quick. They claim to know nothing about the Beastmen, but I get the feeling they know more than they let on. There is a hesitation before they answer questions about them, or about the dig sites. Speaking of the dig site, we've confirmed that the disk isn't some kind of elevator, so there are no beastmen sitting in the bowels of Mars, which is good. The readings we've taken indicate that they may be some kind of device capable of generating extreme electromagnetic fields, though to what purpose we don't know.

We've constructed the satellite comms system but we still can't raise Earth. Our lab techs have concluded that it must be a problem on Earth's end, and they'll probably have it sorted out soon. One of our scientists had an idea for some better suit designs more suited(no pun intended) for the kind of conditions we're experiencing. Our current suits are only rated for a hazard rating of 3, which is fine for the area we're in. Most of the areas we operate in hover around a hazard rating 2-3, rising to a 4 at night with the freezing temperatures. Survival suits could let us operate in the polar regions and some more inhospitable areas, and they might even be able to better protect our normal combat suits. I'm sure the doc is tired of digging Beastman stinger bullets out of us, and those drone lightning cannons HURT! Transport suits might let us carry more gear into combat as well... right now we don't even have room for a sidearm, not that we have sidearms to bring along anyway. Testing these suits will require a lab area which can simulate Martian conditions from all over the globe, so we're rigging one up in Dome A next to the hospital(in case of accidents during testing..).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I still don't know why all of these alien factions are attacking us... What I do know is that we need more raw metals to start fabricating our new rifles, which will give is a big advantage. Alpha Squad deployed out to the west to clear the drones out so we could establish a new metals mine out there.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was just a group of crawling drones, which are really not much of a threat. We took them out in short order, and the tech teams are coming out to place a Geological probe so we can home in on the metal veins we detected.

How long will it actually take before you can strike back and actually take territory for yourself?

Posting to watch.

I'm really enjoying this LP, I love the game. My best play through on This was several hours in and then I got destroyed by Martians after spreading my self to thin >,<

I HAVE been taking territory from the drones, but they're fairly easy. Once I get the rifles produced I can assault the beastmen or reticulans, but I'm playing on hard and am currently almost entirely out of ammo. It won't be long

Colonist Log - Gene Lawrence

The Beastmen have attacked one of our bases, and Alpha squad is responding. We're scraping the bottom of the barrel here for supplies, and are going into this mission with only half the normal ammunition loadout due to rationing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The mission goes pretty well, though Harald was shot up pretty badly. We got him back to the transport before his suit air leaked out and hooked him up to a life support system to stabilize him on the way to Home. He's admitted to the hospital right away, and I'm assured he will make a full recovery. I got four kills myself, not bad for a 'scientific liason officer'.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When we got back to Home we got some exciting news... communication with Earth had been re-established! It's been about a month since the comms went down. I ran over to the communications console where one of our techs was watching a recording of the message we got. The video was grainy and badly focused, but seemed to show a grotesquely fat man with several cybernetic implants. One of the Servants then... a kind of cult which worshipped the apotheosis of humanity through technology. One reason we left earth was to get away from his kind, but he's the only voice we've heard from Earth since the planet fell silent. He seemed to be proposing an alliance with the "Free Peoples of Mars" and says that our superiors on earth had perished in a great cataclysm brought about by the Reticulans.

He's obviously lying, I told myself. Any attack on Earth would have been noticeable, even from Mars. While it's true we've been tracking some changes in Earth's atmosphere, nothing major has seemed to change according to our telescopes. The communications blackout could be for several reasons, any of which is more plausible than an alien attack. Still.. we didn't think Mars would be teeming with alien life, either.

I left without watching the rest of the recording, but was later notified that the technicians had been tasked with upgrading our satellite system to transmit and receive high density data bursts. It was quick work, since we made the system modular and expandable. I lent a hand in the original design, so I helped them out a bit. I'm told that the Servants are willing to send us technical specifications on some new gear which may help us here on Mars in exchange for any data we have on the Reticulans and other aliens here. Seems a fair trade. We've also uncovered a few new sites of Martian ruins... or whatever the aliens called themselves. Diego referred to the drones and ruins as 'Martian' and the name stuck. We don't actually know if they evolved here on Mars or if this was just some kind of... outpost. The prevailing theory so far is that the Drones are some kind of automated defense system which tracks and eliminates intruders on the planet. They were activated by accident when we disturbed one of the Martian ruins, so we're proceeding with more caution now. I'm told there is some hope of being able to repair and re-program the drone wrecks we've brought back so far. That could lend us a hand with the manpower situation...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Before I could help finish the data transmission upgrade, Alpha Squad's alert went off. The dig site in Cydonia had once again spewed more Beastmen out onto the surface. We went in and swept the area clean, but Ute was badly hurt. These Beastmen fought smarter, and were probably a bit more senior than the footsolders we've encountered so far.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When we got back I was informed that I'd been pulled from active duty to assist in developing the new combat suits for the team. My tactical experience combined with my scientific background made me ideal to contribute to the new designs, or so I'm told. I guess I'll have to miss out on some fun for a few days while Ramirez and I hack this out.

Flying through the air
Twenty thousand k's an hour
Far away from Earth
Towards a small dusty rock
We call Mars, is our hope.

I was kinda wondering why certain people were still alive even though I saw them die. So I looked closer and noticed that there is sort of a bleed out health bar.

Interesting to be sure.

We really should put a cap on that dig site or something. Having Xenos be able to teleport directly into our heartland is...less than ideal.

We're humanity, we're automatically the good guys. Though this base is kind of iffy, what with allying with one of the two species of Xenos that shot us on sight because they said please.

Indeed, the people you saw on the ground were knocked unconscious and in most cases had to spend a few weeks in the hospital. This happens most often when a weapon like a laser punctures the person's suit. I now have a technician who can repair suit breeches and Gene is trained in medicine and can use medical kits so I'll be a bit better off.

Working on that. We have to figure out what is going on first though.

You'll enjoy the next update. We retake ground from the reticulans and get some actual kit made for combat, no more reworked laser drill crap or scavenged alien pistols.

Question, why are you sending a team of only 4 to the missions? It's not like you can send two squads at the same time if I remember correctly.

Because up till now I've had only four useful weapons and almost no ammunition, so I am conserving it. You can't send two squads at once, but I believe you can send up to 6 people... maybe 8? Will check.

Edit: Anyway all of that is changing now that I can reliably manufacture some decent arms and armor.

Fair enough, although that does put those you didn't sent out behind in the XP curve. :P Oh, and remember, for when you start making drones: They might suck in the early game, but while they still suck you don't really have to worry about keeping them alive or anything like that. Losing a drone is much cheaper than losing an actual soldier.

My only other choice was to send unskilled people out with melee weapons to sit around by the UFO and get massacred. Hardmode AI always seems to send people straight to the UFO to shoot the hell out of you.
