UFO: Afterlight - Red Dawn

Here on Mars, life isn't easy. The air will kill you in under a minute, and nothing grows in the soil.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is the First Martian Colony, affectionately known only as 'Home', built into the hollow of a crater thousands of years older that human civilization. We have lived here for the past 7 months, setting up an operational base and preparing the way for an eventual Martian civilization. 10,000 humans are frozen in the cryovaults below the base, and we cannot keep them there forever. When they wake they will need food, shelter, and space to live. Up until today, construction was proceeding according to schedule.

The cryovaults were the first thing to go in, with redundant backups and a massive cooling array. Atop the massive vault is our main landing pad for the one air transport we have. Next came the aquaduct system which melts water ice at the polar cap and brings it down to a water filtration system for our consumption. Water is recycled in-house as well, but there is always loss. A solar plant provide clean and free energy, more than enough for the small number of colonists who are awake, but that will have to be expanded as well before the others awaken. Aside from that we have three gabitation domes, a civil engineering bay, a laboratory and a technical workshop. Using minerals brought up from Earth and mined locally on Mars, we can fabricate anything we need using these facilities.

Today though, an alert system came online. A scientific dig site in Cydonia is broadcasting an alert triggered by one of the expeditionary members.

I am Gene Lawrence, junior researcher attached to the Cydonia expeditionary force assigned to investigate a strange rock formation which orbital scans say may be an untapped mineral vein or possibly even water-ice close to Home. I was carrying a sample case back towards the temporary hab complex at the dig site when an alert pulsed across my suit computer. It was an automated distress message from Dr. Heinemann's suit. I thought it may be some sort of malfunction so I keyed my suit radio but was met with static. Bringing up a diagnostic, I saw that a powerful transmission was blanking out all suit-radio frequencies. This couldn't be an accident.

I dropped the sample case and moved as quickly as these bulky suits allow to the displayed location of Dr. Heinemann...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I was too late. His suit broadcast shut down a moment after I arrived. The computer was drained of power and there were burn marks across the front of the suit. The body was exposed to the air through a large rip in the suit material. I moved up the ramp to the Hab complex in search of Diego. I tried keying my suit radio a few more times but the heavy static was blocking all communication. This couldn't be natural. Diagnostics indicated that the jamming was sharp and covered the specific band we use for suit comms. It didn't stop the emergency beacon or telemetry uplinks, just the voice communications between suits. Nothing natural is that specific... what is going on?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found Diego in the storage room looking for spare power packs for the laser rigs we brought for cutting rock samples. He looked over at me as I came in and started speaking but I couldn't hear him. I moved closer and performed a manual suit linkage to establish a communications channel.

Diego: "What the hell is going on Gene? Where is Heinemann?"
Gene: "He's... he's dead."
Diego: "What? What happened? Where is he? We have to get out of here Gene. There's some kind of comms malfunction, it may be a storm."

Diego was visibly shaken. The man was not very bright, mostly brought along to do the heavy lifting. He didn't deal well with stress or sudden change. Once he'd gone on a rage and punched through a monitor just because we'd changed our departure time for a mission by 2 hours to ensure our meteorology sciences division got all the information they needed. Apparently he'd had a 'dart game' scheduled and he missed it. The man has no sense of priority.

Gene: "We have to go, I agree. Something is blanking our suit radios. Lets get out to the transport and head to Home."
Diego: "We can't leave without the professor!"
Gene: "He's dead Diego. DEAD. We don't have time to retrieve his body, mission protocol says we abort and head home. We can come back once a determination is made and we're better equipped. We don't even have any weapons Diego, and nothing natural can block out a specific radio band. This is the work of... well its not natural. Let's go."

Diego looked like he wanted to keep arguing but I broke off the suit link and took a laser drill from the rack and led the way to the exit. I could pull rank on Diego if I had to, technically I was a military attachment to the expedition and outranked Diego, who was a civilian contractor with BlackWatch Corporation. None of that meant much any more on Mars though, Earth is a long way away. Diego followed, much to my relief. Though he had blanked his faceplate so I couldn't see his expression, I was certain I detected a sulk in his stance. As we walked out onto the catwalk leading to the transport, I heard something ahead. Sound didn't carry far in the thin atmosphere but I distinctly heard mechanical sounds and a rumble transmitted up through my feet from the catwalk. We rushed ahead to investigate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A robot! A stupid robot, some kind of drone or automated unit, guarding the transport. It hit me with an electrical discharge before I drilled its optic sensor out with the laser drill. They're not really effective weapons but if properly focused they can do quite a bit of damage to an unarmored target. The drone went offline and fell over as Diego and I rushed into the transport and headed back to Home.

When we returned to base and debriefed command about the situation, we learned that two more long range expeditions had been attacked as well, almost simultaneously. Command seems to think it has something to do with the Cydonia dig. I remember Dr. Heinemann mentioning something about a 'fascinating discovery' there but I didn't see anything... then again I was a bit busy getting the hell out of there. Command is tight-lipped about the whole thing, refusing to answer any questions. When I asked when we were going back for Heinemann's body, I was told that they would 'keep me informed'.

Idiots.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is the surface map of Mars as we know it. So far we have explored three nearby territories. Cydonia, the Acid Plains, and Xanthe. Geological survey probes in the Acid Plains indicate useful hydrocarbon deposits which could be refined into fuel, while Cydonia's returned indicated unusual subsurface mineral deposits. Those two red markers indicate the site of the other two attacks by drones. I wonder who built them? Why would they attack us?

I've just been informed that the techs were sent to the Acid Plains to establish a fuel refinery so our transport can venture further afield. It is very fuel inefficient compared to our crawlers, but its significantly faster and useful for rapid deployment. I have to suit up and get out there. End Log-

Yep, I'm doing a UFO Afterlight LP but (as usual) I'm not sticking strictly to the storyline. The game doesn't allow renaming of units as far as I can tell. Still, it should be a fun read. At least I hope so. Let me know if you enjoy it, or want me to do something specific.

Cool, Afterlight is my second favourite in the series (the first being the first game, it was clunkier and more awkward, but I loved the feel of it). What difficulty are you playing on?

You know... I knew the original could be pretty cartoony at times.

But... this is just full out.

But I assume it is only the art style that looks like this. I doubt there will be anything silly in game.

It's mostly just the art style, the series got cartoonier as time went on. The game itself takes itself very seriously though, although it does get a little bit silly sometimes.

Colonist Log - Gene Lawrence

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Setting up the fuel refinery was uneventful. Most of the parts had been prefabricated months ago, but the construction wasn't scheduled to start for another 3 weeks due to our manpower situation. It had been deemed 'low priority'. I guess these drone attacks have lit a fire under someone's ass.

When the team returned from the construction site, I was called into Dr. Ramirez's office and informed that I had been pulled from technical duty and assigned to Alpha Squad. Alpha squad is nominally in charge of base security, but realistically they haven't had much to do since we arrived. With such a small group, there is virtually no crime and as far as we know there is nobody else on the planet. After these drone attacks though, it looks like Alpha Squad will be seeing some action. That should cheer up old Harald.

The leader of Alpha Squad is Ute Heinemann, wife of Dr. Jurgen Heinemann. She's a cold old bitch but I can tell the death of her husband is affecting her more than she's letting on. She's tough, ex-military working for BlackWatch and in charge of any military matter on the planet as far as Home base is concerned. Ute also has the only working rifle in Home.

Her second in command is Harald Zamyatin, a man so big his suit had to be custom-built when he arrived. He stands nearly seven feet tall before putting the suit on. If we do meet anything out there, I'd bet dollars to donuts that Harald will scare the hell out of them. When he heard about the Drone attacks, he brought out one of the circular rock saws and started talking about modifying it into a melee weapon. We calmed him down a bit and he's been practicing with the two pistols we have.

They assigned Diego to Alpha Squad as well. We're the only ones with 'experience' killing the drones so we get front-row seats to the fight I guess. Hopefully we can figure out what is going on here and stop it.

We are NOT equipped to fight any kind of war here.. in fact what I've mentioned so far is our entire armory. One ancient FN F2000 rifle, a Walther P22 Pistol, and a Dan Wesson 722-VHG Pistol. We have a few boxes of ammo for each of them, but that's about it. I heard the other science types grumbling about being diverted from 'important research' to 'making weapons' so I guess Command is working out the armory situation. Are we really up for a fight though? These drones just appeared out of nowhere, according to every report. Nothing was happening, then poof... drones spitting lightning at you! Aside from the guns, we have two of those laser drills and about 15 power packs. They're not really weapons though, just modified scientific instruments. They can function as signaling devices, rock drills, sample cores, etc but with a bit of tuning the beam stays collimated long enough to deliver a small punch to whatever is on the other end.

Just got a message, looks like Alpha Squad is heading out to one of the earlier attack sites.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We arrived in the glaring light of Martian dawn. I brought up the mission specs to see what the previous team was doing here when attacked. Looks like they were setting up a geosurvey drone to look for more mineral deposits out here. Diego and Harald went north, taking the high road. Ute and I went low.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ute and I heard one of the machines higher up on the rocks. Good thing the techs retuned our suit radios because a quick check revealed the same jamming as before. Our radios are operating on a new frequency range and we set up an ambush for the drones.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They got Harald with the lightning discharge weapon once, but it was a glancing blow. His suit comp shorted out but the rest of the systems were working and he wasn't badly injured, just a small burn. Harald spotted two more drones and we dealt with them swiftly. The things aren't so scary now that we know what to expect, and they're really not very bright.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One of the drones looked in good condition so we loaded it into the transport before heading back. A quick sweep from the air showed the area was clear of hostiles, so we returned to base. They admitted Harald to the hospital for his injury and the techs drooled over the drone wreck. I went and took a shower, then went to debriefing. I'm told that Harald will make a full recovery and should be back on duty tomorrow.

Colonist Log - Gene Lawrence

Command has informed us that as of 2 hours ago all communications with Earth have been lost. We've been trying to get comms back up, but we can't determine if the problem is on our end or theirs. Given that we've encountered sophisticated jamming technology recently, we're assuming it is a problem with our comms gear. The science team is developing a new satellite-based comms array which we can launch into orbit to re-establish communications with Earth.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The other emergency is that the drones have hit our aquaduct. We have about three days worth of fresh water stored up, but after that we will be in trouble. Looks like Alpha Squad is going out again. Our supply situation is deteriorating rapidly, we barely have enough ammo for the makeshift lasers. They're incredibly inefficient as weapons, and the powerpacks drain quickly at the output rate required to function as a weapon. The science team is working on it, but its something we'll have to deal with for now. We're suiting up and deploying to the aqueduct.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Piece of cake, though the robots were too shot up to be any use to the boys in the lab. This isn't so bad really. The technical team is heading out to Crisis to establish a local base, the geosurvey found some rich metal veins down there that we can exploit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They were only working down there for a day or two when another alert pulsed across the comms net. Crisis base was under attack from unknown hostiles. They reported no casualties but had to evacuate. Alpha Squad suits up again. This shouldn't be a big deal, we'll send those drones packing.

Initial aerial recon showed no signs of hostiles nor any base damage. We set down inside Crisis base to establish a perimeter and determine what happened. We found out very quickly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Aliens. Real live bloody aliens. With big ass laser rifles too, which punched through our suits like tissue paper. The firefight was incredible, like nothing I'd ever experienced. We could only see a few, but there were at least 6 of the big-headed alien things shooting at us and they were deadly accurate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ute and Harald went down, multiple burns across their suits and leaking gas fast. Diego and I bugged out, grabbing the other two and making for the transport fast. This wasn't a fight we could win. We made it back to the transport and I triggered a remote wipe of the base mainframe. These aliens aren't getting any of our data at least. I was just hoping we could get Ute and Harald to Home alive. We stabilized them in the transport and made it back, only to find out the aliens had sent a communique ahead of us. The science team was able to translate the message, and it seemed to be a call for peace and cooperation. Peace and love my ass, they shot up two of our soldiers and invaded our base!

They are apparently offering two of their personnel to come over as liasons, and a few of their weapons as well as some technical assistance. God knows we could use any help we can get, but I don't trust em. Either way, its not my call.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Should we take the deal or not? Basically we get 2 alien troops, more fuel, a launcher +5 rockets, 1 laser rifle and 10 power packs, and 2 laser pistols. The downside being that we cannot manufacture these weapons, or ammo to replace what we expend. They're not asking for anything in return... yet. But they did just take our base which had a gold level mineral vein (double yield) and fucked up two good soldiers.

Colonist Log - Gene Lawrence

So Command accepted the proposed alliance from the.. Reticulans, they call themselves. Two of their 'people' showed up with a crate of equipment. Their suits are lighter than ours but look a hell of a lot more flimsy, and don't have integrated comms or computers. Apparently they can read each other's mind, and can even sense where intelligent creatures are from a distance. I guess that's how they were able to fire on us from hiding, without even seeing us.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In other news, we built up a geological sonde in Aram Crater so we can start exploiting the hydrocarbon deposits there. Our new 'friends' claim to be allies now, so they should leave our stuff alone. The guys in the lab went nuts over some of the alien tech, and the reticulans seem very willing to help... almost too eager in fact. Its like they're trying to get in our good graces, maybe they know something else is coming and they want help? I don't know, never met an alien before so I couldn't say what motivates them.

A lot has changed this week... everything's gone to hell. We've lost contact with Earth, been attacked by mysterious robots, met and fought with and then allied with an alien race. Who knew Mars was so busy. There we were thinking we were the only people on the planet... wait, an alert just sounded. I'm starting to dread that sound.

Home's sensors detected some kind of activity at the Cydonia dig site. Thermal indicators, seismic activity, and some kind of EM spike. Alpha Squad is heading out to investigate, and as the (apparently) foremost expert on alien tech, I am going with them. I've been told my assignment to Alpha is permanent now and I am officially the 'scientific field expert' for any alien technology or life forms we encounter. I'm told someone from the tech crew will be joining us as well at some point, but right now they're busy setting up new sondes and mines. We're going to need new resources to defend ourselves, and we can't expect any support from Earth. Even if they could send us anything, it would take months to arrive.

I've been issued Reticulan Laser Rifle. It's unwieldy and has a half-melted look. The lab guys tell me its partially organic, which is weird. The thing is powerful though, and has a lot more punch than the makeshift laser drills. I'm told we may be able to make our own version of the rifle, not quite as good but still much better than what we have now with the benefit that we could make more weapons and ammo ourselves. I don't like us being so dependent on the greys- er... reticulans. I'm told I shouldn't call them Greys but they look exactly like the aliens in old sci-fi movies so its hard to keep a straight face sometimes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We got back to the dig site in no time. Aerial recon showed that a large disk of metal had been uncovered in sector 3. Well I guess that's why we were getting unusual mineral readings before. The disk was asymmetrical, whether by design or because it had been broken up over the years from geological activity. In the center of the disk was a hole which glowed with a yellow light. We set down nearby, seeing no drone activity. Boy were we wrong...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ute had fun shooting up the useless crawler drones. The alien weapons performed well, though Diego is still upset that he got a pistol. Nevermind that its stronger than the laser drill he had before, he said it 'feels puny'. Well I'm a better shot than hm, so he can deal with it. After we took care of the drones in the immediate area, we moved onto the disk. It became clear that this arrangement wasn't by accident or due to geological activity, it was made this way by design. I still don't know what the disk was for originally, or who made it, but they had a twisted sense of aesthetics.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We spotted a larger drone, oh-so-originally classified by Diego as a "Walker", over by a small device on the side of the disk. Not taking any chances, we lined up and started shooting. Harald loves the alien rocket launcher, but the ammo is very limited. After he'd fired off his rockets, he stowed it and pulled out the pistol. The walker's electron cannons packed more of a punch than the crawlers. Ute got hit pretty bad and had 2nd degree burns. Her suit comms shorted out as well, so the rest of the mission was done via hand signals. Harald took a blast in the face... his faceplate absorbed most of the impact but was pitted and scarred impairing his vision, and the suit arced a bit burning him inside. Still, our concentrated fire brought it down.

That's when it got weird.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some.. creatures-I guess a new kind of alien-came out of the glow in the center of the disk. It must be some kind of elevator I guess? They were immediately hostile, firing some kind of weapon at us which spit out crystalline darts that punctured our suits. Command came on the line and ordered us out of there, so we booked it back to the transport. I don't know what the hell is going on, but I was glad to leave. Too bad we couldn't retrieve that walker wreck though, I know the lab techs would have gotten excited over that.

When I got back and finished my debriefing, I went down to the lab to have a chat with Jackie. She's in charge of manufacturing and fabrication. She told me that they've worked out schematics for new projectile weapons that will function correctly in Mars' low pressure atmosphere and dry conditions. Ute has a lot of trouble with her rifle... the lubricants boil off, dust gets in the moving parts... its a mess. These new rifles and pistols are sealed against the environment and designed for these conditions, so should give us a much better chance. She's fabricating as many as she can, though the work is painfully slow due to her inadequate tools.

After that I sat down with Tabbie-one of the aliens... his name is Tabatch't'leviam but we call him Tabbie and he doesn't seem to care-and started going over some of the finer points of Reticulan tech, but I didn't get very far when Alpha Squad was activated again and sent back to the dig. Our new mission: Take the beastmen down and secure the area. I have to agree, we need to secure this dig site, we can't just have hostile aliens crawling up our backside.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It didn't take us long to return, and the 'Beastmen'(Diego again...) hadn't moved much further than before. We set up a firing line as they charged us and a few well-placed shots took them out. There were only four Beastmen at the dig site, and the glow in the center of the disk had become much dimmer... maybe the elevator thing has stopped working? Anyway, they weren't all that tough against the lasers, and Harald got a pair with his rocket launcher as well. We recovered a few bodies, but the drone wrecks had been cleared away and there were tracks leading off into the distance so I'm certain we haven't seen the last of them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the site secured, we took everything we could find back to Home and I started training with the Reticulans again hoping to learn more about their technology. They do a lot of things differently than we do, and I may be able to apply some of their insights to our own tech.

It really is a fun little game, I actually enjoyed the whole series.

I am skipping some of the tedium but any x-com-like will have some of that. Hell x-com itself had its fair share. :P

This series is decent.
It's not X-com and it barely tries to pretend it is.
The combat system is more like Apocalypse... and there is no funding what so ever.
Heck the first part of this series didn't even have any resourcess other than bases themselves.
The second part added 3 types of resourcess (common hi tech and alien tech) and some diplomacy (human supspecies).
And the third game (i never played afterlight) apparently has raw resourcess in the planetary crust.
