Merchant burning fortress - I am puzzled.

Why do caravans leaving my fort burst in flames?

All the caravans leaving my fort die in flames in my gates, but they do not burst into flames when coming in. I suspect this may have to do with the magma below the ramps and climbing time, but I am unsure.  I am totally happy with this btw, as I can loot all the non-flamable things afterwards, but it is wierd.

If the magma is not further than 2zlvls away from the ramps the caravans use, that's what's causing them to burn. Travelling down the ramp treats the caravan as being inside the wall, or in this case, magma.

Basically, this happens because, no matter what, the animals pulling a wagon will always be 2 full tiles away in the direction of the wagon's movement from the center of the wagon, which is what determines the wagon and animal's z-level, even if this puts the animals inside a wall.

Going down the ramp, the animals are pointing away from the slope. Therefore, no weirdness occurs. Parts of the wagon are inside the wall, but none of it is actually through the other side and in the hot stuff.

Going up the ramp, however, the animals are facing towards the slope, and as the wagon approaches the ramp, the animals clip up to 2 full tiles into the wall, which is enough to put them in the magma, resulting in immediate burnination.

Thank you for the full explanation! All in all, I would put this down as a feature rather than a bug :)

I'd call it a bug, as it only happens to creatures accidentally clipping into magma.

We just found another way to weaponize merchants, and another way to get free stuff without the use of military.

It is a bug yes, but a useful bug. Hence smiley and comment.

I wonder if the pack animals are drownable if we replace the magma with water.
