My well(s) won't work
« on: September 14, 2012, 12:12:04 pm »

I'm sure this has been covered before, but searching this forum for the word "well" is...well...unfruitful.

I have four wells, and I can't designate any of them as water zones.

The first is over a stagnant channel. The well is 2 z levels above the water and the well is 3 z levels deep, with a ramp the bottom level. The water is 7, 7, 3 from the bottom up.

The next 3 are stacked over each other. They have a straight shot to a redirected river (flowing water). The water is 7 deep and bottom-most well is 4 z levels above the water. This also has a ramp at the bottom of the well.

I have some thoughts on what I could be seeing.
  • I built the wells before the water got there so they don't believe there is water below them.
The wells are over ramps so I can't designate them.
I'm not supposed to be able to designate them as water sources.
The alpaca god is upset at the way I keep letting its children starve to death.

Thanks for the help so I can continue with non-well related portions of the game.

I don't know if you need other ideas when you have magma.

Well well.

Usually you have to designate a tile NEXT TO the water for it to work.  http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Activity_zone#Water_Source

I should note that, with my wells, my dwarfs will use them without designating a water source.  Additionally, this may only apply to open water and not a well, per se.

As PBH says, water designations are where the dwarves stand to get the water.  Also, you don't have to designate a well as a water source for it to work. The well will show as 'dry' if the bucket can't reach the water, and as 'active' if it can.

Your well needs to be built over water (obviously). The well shaft has to be an unobstructed path down to water of at least 2/7 or 3/7 deep (can't remember which, but I know 1/7 doesn't allow the bucket to fill).  Floor grates, hatches, stairs, and the like all block the bucket from reaching the water.  I don't know if a well will block one at a higher z-level, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

They all show active. So that is good I guess. Time to change my zone orders to allow for non zone drinking.

Thanks all.

Wells count as "open" tiles and as such wells on higher z-levels can draw water through wells on lower ones.
