SPOILERS! Fighting the Circus

In addition to traditional combat, how many ways are there to effectively fight them off?

Caveins and menancing spikes or spears in upright spear/spike traps.

Obsidianizing, platinum mine arts full of gold statues and large, serrated steel discs, distracting them with tons of kittens, puppies, and nobles...
Dying...

So, the kittens would do the fighting and the discs would just be for decoration? 'Cos clowns are trapavoid, right? Also, when the clowns go boom, do they destroy constructions and buildings?

Why not dump gobbos down there until everything is dead?
A few FB/titans would help the process along.

Dumping gobbos and other pleasant things down there to do my dirty work seems like a nice idea. The problem is, flying performers can fly up any holes I make for that purpose. Maybe a sealed dropping room, operated by a retracting bridge?

-Webbed cage traps.
-Shooting gallery
-Army of husks
-Ballista shooting gallery
-minecart shotgun

I tend to favor the webbed cages when I have a GCS, mainly because I like putting clowns in my zoos. The spike trap approach is good, too, if you use a piece of artifact furniture as bait. At least you'll get bones and meat out of a few of them. In all cases, you should use magma-safe materials if possible in case you get fiery clowns.

If you have modded your dwarves to breed like hell and reduced the child stage to 1: Throw numbers at it, if you have a necromancer down there, even better! Eventually all landscape will be replaced with rotting corpses.

If you have modded your dwarves to breed like hell and reduced the child stage to 1: Throw numbers at it, if you have a necromancer down there, even better! Eventually all landscape will be replaced with rotting corpses.
There will be three immediate outcomes:

1. The clowns lose and the necromancer survives, rendering the Circus uninhabitable.
2. The clowns lose and the necromancer dies. Clean up achievable.
3. The clowns win and roast all the corpses to disintegration. The necromancer dies. Happy fun times imminent.

4. Necromancer convinces demons to join him and builds a flying tower out of demons. World rendered uninhabitable within three years.

So, 2 out of three possibilities involve Total unsolvable failure, including impending doom, While the remaining one will still invovle a massive battle against undead forces? Sign, Me, Up.

The main question for me though is, do retractable bridges hold liquids?
Like, if built in a shaft, like some kind of retractable bridge-hatch, to pour hot liquids on it from above?
Then release it down the clown-access shaft?
Then release the retractable bridge above the first one, with cold liquids?

Then release the bridge the two liquids mixed on, and have the solified mass accelerate towards the bottom of the shaft where the clowns are trapped between drawbridges?

My son, many speak of the honor in war.
My preferred method is to wait until their back is turned, then impale them with a pike held by someone else.
Preferrably from a distance.
