14th Slate

Our milita spent some time getting to know a black bear today, before Dr. Marcus arrived to break up the party.

Dr. Marcus HATES parties.

Uh oh.

25th Slate

A new recruit, named Thuthu, has gone a bit odd.  He's claimed our mechanic's workshop for himself, and mutters and shrieks.  I am interested in this process.  What manner of insanity is this?  What will it drive him to create?  He has gathered chert and...dog leather.  This will no doubt be profound.  Profoundly stupid, perhaps, but profound.

1st Felsite

I have expanded the expendable militia, and stepped up patrols in the mist zones.  I will have zombies!

I am receiving repeated notices that giving water has been suspended due to a lack of buckets.  Bulletin: we also lack water.  As well as anyone in need of medical attention.  I feel training may have lapsed at Umbral HQ.  Competence seems low even by Umbral standards.

4th Felsite

Oh crap.  We are out of drink.

Thuthu has finished his project.

Sigh...I need a drink...crap.

6th Felsite

Corust, captain of The Expenables, has given birth to a boy.  I do hope she carries it into the murk.  A husk baby...can it get any creepier than that?

9th Felsite

Proud father Onec had a bit of a tiff with a giant louse today.  It went...poorly.  Still, valuable combat data was obtained, and that is one less mouth to feed.

14th Felsite

Another crossbow man picked a fight with a louse.  He is doing much better, punching the heck out of that bug.  I can't help but feel that Onec was simply slacking.

Elves have arrived to trade.  Interesting.  I have yet to have a chance to observe their species.  I have my fingers crossed for a cloud to arrive.

Progress on sub level three is nearing completion, I think.  I have nothing but respect for the fine minds at Umbral, but seriously, this is bananas.

The elves, happily, appear to deal in exotic animals.  I picked up a dingo, a giant wren, a giant crow, and a giant hedgehog.  These will, of course, be exposed to the C-virus at the earliest possible convenience.  I remembered to go back and pick up as much food and drink as they had brought.  I was surprised by just how little of value they had, I barely traded any of what I had ordered brought to the depot.  I mean, really, elves, the hell would I want toys for?  Do I strike you as the whimsical sort?

Is this the face of whimsy?

*    *    *

Does anyone know if caged animals will succumb to the mist?  Or are they in a pocket dimension in there?

Let the !!SCIENCE!! commence!

17th Felsite

Exotic animals have been placed around the perimeter of the compound, awaiting the viral cloud.

18th Felsite

Dr. Marcus has grown attached to his prized crossbow.  He immediately slaughtered a lamb in celebration.  That is the kind of forward thinking we don't see in the new crop of recruits.

Later that day...

Dr. Marcus is clearly a man who merits close attention.

20th Felsite

I took the liberty today of updating the resumes of senior management to reflect our accomplishments since our last review period.

23rd Felsite

Usually I would record Dr. Marcus's latest impressive kill here, but I cannot...it was beyond even my ability to comprehend, to gaze upon fully...

26th Felsite

A woman I had honestly never noticed before gave birth today.  While gathering berries.  Not a cloud in sight.

1st Hematite

Finished digging on sub bastement three.  All that's left now is to clear the loose stone, smooth all the surfaces, and install the doors.  And then to install the traps and furnishings.

Meanwhile, I start digging on sub basement two.  Which is pretty easy, actually.

Albert Wesker's Journal

21 Hematite

I constructed a cage trap today using our artifact mechanism.  Partly to stick it to Thuthu, and partly in hopes this will enhance our capture of test subjects.

18th Malachite

More migrants have arrived.  I've no idea why.  I stopped giving new arrivals bed rooms two waves ago.  I guess I can't grumble too much.  The extra hands will be welcome when building the mansion which will hide the entrance to the lab.  And, of course, it only raises the chances of someone being caught in the cloud.

2nd Galena

The last month of summer, and it is raining.  Actual liquid water.  The bodies of water in the area remain frozen.  I wonder if there is some way to gather the precipitation.  I have an idea for aquarium...

I took a census today.  The number of dead was interesting.  Thirty-seven dead.  Thirty-seven is my favorite prime number!  This must be a sign.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

4th Galena

Work is finished in both B2 and the basement.  Today we begin construction on the first floor of The Mansion of Halls.  It is truly an ambitious undertaking.

I mean...how is one even supposed to get in?

8th Galena

I made a new militia squad.  The Magical Tribes.  Their name, not mine.  Into it went all our fishermen, fish cleaners and fish dissectors.  We have no fish.  We have no liquid water at all.  Go stand over there by the goat and wait for the fog.  As an afterthought I send the shearer with them, to collect wool from the zombie goat.

I also reinstate mandatory crossbow practice for the senior management as well as interns.  Our skills have gotten rusty, except for Dr. Marcus.

10th Galena

There is much clear-cutting needed in order to construct the manor.  I've built a forge to produce some axes out of the metal bars I have been saving.

A bone carver caught my eye, he made several sets of masterful bone bolts today.  They are exquisite.  Given that we still have a limited and dwindling supply of metal bolts, this is excellent news.  Someone give that man a bedroom!

Life is proceeding well here.  It is distressing that the clouds are so infrequent.  The tentacles do give it a certain ambiance.  There are forty-seven citizens here.  Forty-seven is not prime, not at all.  The good news is there are currently no slackers.  Not counting the infants of course.  Cursed parasites.  Not the good kind of parasites either, not like leeches.  I wonder how Dr. Marcus is doing?

He is tanning the hide of the chinchilla he slew and butchered.  Delightful.

11th Galena

Lega, a former fisherman and recent recruit, has gone "fey" on us, if you know what I mean.  He has claimed a craftsman's workshop.

13th Galena

The representatives from Umbral arrived.  They have brought supplies.  They also come to see what we have produced, and collect battle data.  I am confident they will be pleased by our progress.

(Editors note:  Whoa, that human caravan tore into the depot.  It sped across the map faster than a crossbow bolt.  I have no idea what that was about.  The frame rate didn't jump.)

15th Galena

The Umbral liaison asks what supplies we will need for the next stage of progress.  I tell him bolts, and lots of them.

Lega shouts for stone, and wood, and gems.  We have all that.  The gems are in the depot, so I order one crate returned to the stock.  It did the trick.  Lega has begun...

17th Galena

We are actually running out of barrels for the chinchillas these recruits have been killing lately.  I am going to try to trade it to the caravan before it spoils.

18th Galena

A giant mosquito has decided to mail a metal smith named Ushav today.  I do have some metal smithing that needs doing, and while he is pretty messed up by this point, he's still up and fighting.  I think I'll try to save him.

All three squads are ordered.  Kill the blood sucker!  It flew away like the sissy little giant insect it is, and Ushav lay bleeding out.  I never did set up that clinic.  I think I'll put one down in the morgue, on B3...

Anyways, the umbral representatives are more than pleased with what we have to trade.  As asked, the brought us a wide variety of domestic animals to use as test subjects, including breeding pairs.  I aslo bought all their metal bars, alcohol, some milk and what metal bolts they had.

20th Galena

I wake up to this...

I'm going back to bed...

3rd Limestone

Umbral asks that we prepare the following for their return next year:

9th Limestone

The wounded metal smith died today.  I did set up a clinic in the morgue, but without water to wash his wounds or to hydrate him, it was just a race to heal which he lost.

20th Limestone

More migrants have arrived.  It saddens me that migrants are more frequent than the cloud of murk.

23rd Limestone

A flock of giant keas has alighted near the laboratory entrance, disrupting work.  In short order, they are mostly dead, unconscious, and/or vomiting everywhere.

4th Sandstone

Some sort of sub-human beast has appeared.  It has green-ish skin and red eyes.  Overall, I approve of the design, qute nice.  He stabbed a baby and stole it from our militia captain as well, so there's that.  She doesn't seem all that great a soldier or mother.  I stand ready to issue the order to slaughter it, but it is running toward the cages, I want to see how this plays out.

The goblin has dropped the baby to better flee from the enraged mother, who has left the bleeding baby in the snow and writhing tentacles.  Perhaps I was too quick to judge her.

I was looking over the child's medical records, and realized I had missed what must have been quite the interesting battle back in Malachite.  The child seems resilient.

And the goblin has been slain by our own Mother of the Year.  Mere steps from the cage traps.

Another goblin broke from hiding to flee at the sight of his fallen comrade.

A young doctor attempts to attend to the injured child, but is foiled by our lack of water.  The thread necessary to suture it's wounds might be doable.

12th Sandstone

Sheared a sheep and spun some thread, which a clothier immediately used to weave cloth.  Let's try this again.  Holding up alright there, baby?

Huh...I think I may like this kid.

15th Timber

Jasro, a recent recruit, has been complaining lately.

It's the usual laundry list of whining.

Since I happened to have a recently furnished bedroom, I gave him one.  This is not over, however, I will not brook dissent.  THis incident has made me aware of the need for justice.  I begin construction of a small prison.

Later, our goat staked outside died of starvation, just as a mosquito woman began to harass an errant ewe.  Where is the blasted cloud?  I think I will replace the goat with our giant crow.

19th Timber

Construction of the cell is nearly complete.  I appoint Dr. Marcus to the position of sheriff.

22nd Timber

A goblin snatcher was caught in a cage trap today.  I wonder how I should best utilize it...

28th Timber

...
...

(A few pages are given over to drawings of stone.  Scribbled notes and equations are illegible in the margins.)

5th Moonstone

I honestly do not know what came over me.  The work is exquisite, far beyond my skills.  I am left without even the foggiest of ideas how I made it and why.  The potential behind this force is clearly vast.  I must study the phenomenon.

17th Opal

Another recruit spawned offspring today.

25th Opal

Another snatcher strikes.  Our milita captain's child is once again the target of his assault.  He runs from the angered mother toward the traps.  The militia catches him and beats him to death bare handed.  The child is uninjured, and remains in very high spirits.

Meanwhile, construction of the prison is finished.  Dr. Marcus's demands were finally satisfied when I put my glourious statue in his office/dining room/prison cell.  Construction of the mansion is proceeding well.  Highwood walls, pine floors, stone or wooden doors, as needed.  We have set up a glass works for manufacturing lab equipment, as well as windows.  Now we are working to make soap for our O.R.  The lack of water is still a major concern...

3rd Obsidian

I noticed something interesting whilst viewing the goblin corpse that still lies in the depot.  Dr. Ashcroft's coat was lying on the stairway.  I went to go find him.  He was occupied in dragging a hostile giant kea to be chained in front of the mansion.  He seemed to be fully clothed, though his choice of attire was intriguing.

Though I'm not one to judge.  It's cold here.

5th Obsidian

Another birth today, a girl.  There are around five babies around the place, last I looked.  I draft mothers into the military to increase chance of infant husking.  For !!SCIENCE!!, of course.

Remember that baby, what-his-face?  He was stabbed by a goblin....

Yeah, him.  Aren't his side-burns awesome?  Anyway, I saw his dad today.

Yeah, that one.  Other than being quite dead, he is looking well.

10th Obsidian

Another child graces the Mansion of Halls.  Population here has reached 59.

With great reluctance, I dig more living space.

13th  Obsidian

It seems we have a few dead animals in our cages.  The butchers don't appear to see them, so I have intalled those cages right next to the butcher shop.  Let's see what happens.

16th Obsidian

One of our wood cutters spotted a kobold thief skulking in the trees.  Fortunatly the wood cutter was also a soldier, handy with an axe, and had one kill to his name already...

...I'll have to ask him about that some time.

Members of all four squads decend on the kobold.  All but the wood cutter who ran away like a child.  A child without side-burns.  The milita attack with enthusiasm, if not much precision.  Shrufufrombas's last minutes were an eternity to him, I'd warrent.

24th Obsidian

I had to go as far as linking a lever to the corpse cages, then pull it.  Maybe now that the carcasses are on the butcher's way to work he'll get the hint.

I begin some engravings, to get the craftsmen in shape for the artwork that will adorn the finished mansion.  Masterworks begin pouring from the engravers.  It will piss them off greatly when I smooth over them again.  Some, I may keep...

Most of the others tend to be about me, or my statue.  I don't know much about art, but...

22nd Granite, 1979

A new year dawns, and nothing's really changed.  The recruits still grumble.  A goblin came, and fled immediately.  A kobold came, and was killed after bruising a recruit.  That'll give him something to complain about.

And then the migrants arrived.  Now I feel like complaining.  Twenty new recruits in all, total poulation is seventy-nine.

6th Felsite

While reviewing the state of our animals to decide which would be butchered and which to stake on the surface (I put the dingo in the extreme southeast) I noticed something magnificent.

I don't know how or even when Princess became our ally.  Nor does it much concern me.  The prickle berry seeds at the bottom of his cage may be the key.  Someone has been feeding him, and he has grown attached to us.  Perhaps.  I am not quite ready to trust him to be released yet.  I shall have to conduct some controlled experiments to test his allegiances.

Timta, the happy-go-lucky orphan and snatcher-bait has grown out of infancy.

18th Felsite

I have constructed a small chamber.  It holds Princess, whose cage is linked to a lever.  A small number of recruits will be stationed within, the door locked and the lever pulled.

Incidentally, an elven caravan has arrived.  I wonder if they would like to enjoy the show with me.

21st Felsite

Busy couple of days.  Some recruits have been bashing a grizly bear with their side-arms for about two days.  Two soldiers stand ready to greet princess.  The elves are unloading whilst I examine every...single...blasted trinket in this place for the presence of bone or wood or leather.  And a kobold thief appears.  I wonder if it and Princess will get along...

22nd Felsite

The bad news is that Princess is not ready for integration into society at large at this time.

The good news is that the elves have brought along a tamed giant mosquito.

24th Felsite

Princess is recaptured, the grizly is still being a surprisingly obliging punching bag, and I have everything I want from the elves plus a lot of cloth.

1st Hematite

After about a week, the grizzly has apparently decided he does not like being beaten senseless with crossbows.  We have lost two to his ferocious attacks.

24th Malachite

At last, the murk has come.  It rolls in from the south, toward the mansion's entrance.  A recruit is caught, he succums instantly.  Within moments, three other recruits have turned.  Also a giant kea.  They begin to attack their former allies.  The recruits are no match for the husks.  I have seen something very troubling.  The husks are able to use weaponry.  They are attacking from afar.  I can only hope that they exhaust their bolts against the wrestlers still fighting to hold off the husks.

25th Malachite

The husks have finished off the survivors.  They move toward the stairs.  Toward the cages.  Six have fallen now.

Yikes!  Things have gotten interesting, maybe too interesting.  I don't know what's coming in the next update, but it's bound to feature death.

27th Malachite

:  Ladies, gentlemen, colleagues, lackeys.  I have gathered us all here to review our situation.  It is... suboptimal, to be frank.  Five of our former employees have been infected by a highly unstable viral mutagen.

:  As well as some animals.  The hedgehog remains chained, but the kea has broken free of its restraints.  It, along with the goose, are considered quite dangerous as they retain their flight after transformation.  Combat data on the kea's capabilities is unavailable, but the goose poses moderate risk.
:
: Of much greater concern are our former security force.  Of the five, two are armed and are to be considered extremely dangerous.  I have codenamed these adversaries "Stingers."  Their skill has, if anything, improved with their alterations.

:  One Stinger has exhausted his supply of bolts, it remains to be seen if they will collect those that remain intact.  The elite Stinger has at least twenty wooden bolts remaining.  Finally we have the husks of three wrestlers:

:  While their combat techniques do tend toward grabs, a punch from one of these "Slammers" can be fatal.

: Now, all survivors are to gather below ground where there will be three cage traps between us and our specimen.  We have food and drink enough to last well over a year.  However, with the number of BOW, it is possible they will subvert our defences.  There is also the matter of our feathered friends.  For this reason every able bodied man or woman will arm themselves with whatever is in our stocks and form up under Dr. Sheriff Marcus, our most skilled marksman.  We must be brave, all our research has built to this moment, the fruits of !!SCIENCE!! are within reach.  I leave you now with a word from Dr. Marcus.
: Alright, I will be brief, as there is much to do to prepare you for our facility's defense.  We stand now at a turning point.  In our lives, in our careers, and in the very history of our world.  As we overcome this trying time we stand poised before a brave new decade.  There is but one word for the 80's, and I share it with you now.
:  ...
:  Leeches.  That is all.

*      *      *

Whew.  I spent all day paused, just getting the full sickening understanding of the situation here at the Mansion of Halls.  The 'canon' characters are safe, Dr. Birkin's lover is getting her crap caved in by a gander, several mooks stand poised to die, the migrants are taking the scenic route past the carnage to get to the gates.  Everyone has been called to the burrows, and now there is nothing to delay me from hitting pause besides the urge to postpone my own glorious destruction.

So, anyone want to claim a migrant?  Your stay is guaranteed to be fun, in the truest dwarf fortress sense of the word.

28th Malachite

The militia buy us time as civilians flood into our hall, and surprisingly, are able to hold their own, keeping the Slammers and Stingers both at bay with hails of wooden bolts.  So far the husk men remain uninjured.  A day has passed with no deaths on either side of the battle.
I have spotted an encouraging sign in the distance, it would seem not all husks are allied...

That hedgehog is pretty bitchin.'  He is currently chained in front of the manner, apparently eating a Slammer.

I will name him Spike, and unleash him on our foes.

It's going to be awesome.

28th Malachite

Two more are dead.  I'm not really sure who they were.  Still no captures.
Oh, crap.  Dr.  Ashcroft has somehow found himself outdoors and in melee with a Slammer.

Farewell, brave man.  I will do my best to avenge you in the Umbral fashion, by bringing you back as something huge and profoundly disturbing.

2nd Galena

!!Success!!

Edward still clings to life despite being beaten to a pulp with a crossbow.  His screams during his brief moments of consciousness reach me even here, in my study.  I face a gruelling decision.  I feel compelled to rescue him from this end, one way or another.  What should I do?  What can I do?...
