Spencer Mansion Inspiration
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:57:38 am »

I was reading various LPs, and was struck with inspiration.  Resident evil, dwarf fortress style!  Or vice verse! Whichever is the more exciting.

Step one:
I create a world with advance parameters and make humans playable.  I insert various words for random seeds, 'STAAAARRRRS!' 'Albert Wesker' etc.  I turn up the number of evil squares by three.  And I wait until year 1978.  I figure 20 years will be enough to take a team of evil humans out into the haunted woods and make a spooky mansion filled with traps, emblems, caged zombies and all.  Then I can crash an embark team named for the cast of RE, perhaps even make a succession fort out of it.  And of course the adventuring potential would be great.

Step two:
Wait 1978 years.....

The year; 1979
The place; a world known as The Absolute Dimension.  Not to be confused with The Absolut Dimension.

(Pictured; The Absolut Dimension)

Seven of the brightest, fittest minds from the Umbral Corporation set out into the wilderness to develop deadly, warped bacteria and horrible crimes against nature.

For !!SCIENCE!!, you see.  And profit.

!!SCIENCE!! + zombies + ??? = profit.  The Umbral mission statement.

The team consists of:
Albert Wesker; a scientist, chemist and doctor.
WIlliam Birkin; ditto.
Edward Ashford; senior Umbral management, also scientist.
John Marcus; really likes leeches.  A lot.
Naspa; intern.
Artuk; executive assistant.
Aquos; maid.

They are each trained in use of sidearms, in case of any slip-ups.  They embark to the Arklay mountains to establish a laboratory far from the prying eyes of the cities.  This is their story.

Wesker's Journal, 1st Granite, 1979
We have arrived.  It is bitter cold here, but the snow is already wiping away our tracks.  There is no sign of life in or between the trees, and no sound but the sighing of the wind.  I send Aquos, the maid to begin clear cutting, once she heats me some tea.  Birkin and I will begin digging shortly, as soon as we finish dismantling the wagon, to hide the evidence trail.

The tea is hot and bitter.  It's good to be evil.

2nd Granite
Per company protocols, we have begun construction on the bottomless pit.  This will be our first priority, as our many hallways, sewers, secret sub-sub-lab and pointless reactors will all be linked to this central feature.

3rd Granite
While unloading the wagon, Aquos dropped one of our many company issued unmarked and fragile vials.  I believe it was part of our 'A-virus' sample.  As this was our only sample, I have docked her pay and begun work on a new virus, which I will dub the 'B-virus.'  It remains to be seen what effect, if any, this will have on the local eco-system.  I look forward to gathering data.

4th Granite
Oh dear, I believe we are starting to see results from our impromptu experiment.

Battle Data will need to be gathered to gauge its use as a Bio Weapon, or BOW.  Initial observations are that while their threat level is low, the are remarkably durable.

*     *      *      *

Oh my!  Will these plucky villains survive?  Will Marcus ever find the leeches he yearns for?  We will find out, as Resident Evil 27:  DF continues.

I'm going to do my best to follow the rough timeline I've found, and I've got the maps for the entire mansion to use as blue-prints.  Surprisingly, I can find nothing about any women in the early days of Umbrella's tomfoolery, so if anyone wants to be dorfed (humed?) as a lady, feel free to pick one.

Edit:  Slight malfunction with my alterations to the humans, unable to appoint nobles, and therefor unable to make a military and issue commands.  Zombie death unavoidable.  Had to do a reset, we'll catch up on the 'continuing' adventures of Umbral Corp. after world re-gen.  Catch you in a thousand years or so.

Albert Wesker's Journal, 5th Granite, 1977

Our training at Ubral HQ paid off handsomely.  Though even the pieces of the new BOWs required subduing, we were able to dispatch them at a distance with our crossbows.  We have begun excavation of an underground complex.  We must shut ourselves off from the surface to stay safe for the time being.  Aquos cuts trees as fast as she is able, we will stock pile what wood we can before any other creatures attack.

11th Granite

Excavation of the main subterranean chamber procedes well.  My strength has grown with even just these few days of labor, and the ground is sandy and unresistant.  William has begun construction of a small biological laboratory.  He hopes to use the new 'B-virus' to augment the capabilities of our war dogs.  Meanwhile, Artuk has built a shooting range that we may hone our skills.  None will stand before us!  Between our skill and the power of !!SCIENCE!! all will tremble before Umbral Inc.!

18th Granite

Our supplies are nearly all underground now.  Though nothing has attacked since the louse-man incident, I still feel it wise to hide our presence here and conduct our holy work in secret.  Dr. Marcus disagrees, shouting 'Leeches!' at any who will stand still long enough.  A fortuitous snow storm has decided the issue for us.  We will seek shelter within the earth.

25th Granite

We bring the last of our logs below ground as the weather clears.  As the sun cuts through the clouds, I see a strange creature through the blinding light (note to self: some sort of dark transparent material held infront of my eyes by wire could prevent such discomfort, and look very cool).  They are some manner of owl/man....thing.  They show none of the decay that the infected lice did, I am unsure if they are a result of science, or whether nature is itself so depraved.

*     *      *

So far we are fairing well.  I should be able to begin construction in earnest as soon as I've sealed us off.  Tune in next time, I plan to kill a dog and capture its vengeful corpse.  For !!SCIENCE!!

28th Granite

Disurbing news...

While I am certainly curious what effect this meteorological phenomenon might have on our intern, I have decided it would be best to retreat to our lab and commence quarantine procedures.  We will observe the owl men once the danger is past.

3rd Slate

Our intrepid intern ventured to the surface today, and reports no sign of either the miasma nor any owl men.  I have decreed our quarantine will remain in effect until more is known of this noxious cloud.

11th Slate

The murk has returned, and this time I have ensured we are prepared.  A horse was staked outdoors so that we might see what manner of thing this cloying mist is.  The results are a resounding success.  Once the horse breathed in the vapors, it was filled and changed immediately.

I believe that the 'A-virus' has altered some species of air-borne bacillus, which has bred with incredible vigor and is even now drifting with the air currents.  Once breathed, the virus is free to breed in its new host.  Sadly, the horse husk has escaped its bonds, but valuable battle data may now be gathered, if we dare to hunt it.

18th Slate

As I'd hoped, the virus has made the former horse quite aggressive, and it has spotted a louse woman.  I am able to gather battle data from safety.  The results exceed my most fevered expectations.

Gentlemen, we have disembowelment.  Via horse.  I have called a half day to celebrate our achievement.  In the morning, we shall set about the construction of traps to capture this magnificent beast.

22nd Slate

Today I conducted an experiment to further gauge the combat potential of our prototype BOW, whom I have code named 'Princess.'  This experiment will compare the combat ability of Princess to that of a trained war dog.  As the experiment is carried out, I am near trembling with an unscientific, and uncharacteristic excitement...
It is glorious, the horse is a weapon the likes of which I have never seen.  The hooves, man!  The hooves!

A moment's exposure to the murk has made this once gentle beast greatly superior to a beast bred and trained for battle its entire life.  With the secret of this virus, even a kitten could become a force of nature, wielded by Umbral.  Hahahaha!
Hmmmm.  A kitten...actually, I think I like the sound of that.
In anycase, we dig for stone now.  We need mechanisms, and cages.  I must have Princess.
In an unrelated note, we spotted this in a puddle of melted slush:

For reasons completely beyond my understanding, the mere sight of this tentacle seems to upset the women folk to no end.  !!SCIENCE!! is clearly a manly undertaking.

9th Felsite
Artuk has decided to make herself somewhat useful by establishing an inventory of our supplies.  She informs me that food may become an issue before we are resupplied.

Her concern over such a trivial matter as simple sustenance does not speak well of her dedication to our glorious work, but I have decided that some light agriculture is in order.  Perhaps we can learn something by injecting strawberries with liquid evil or some such.  Also chocolate.

The stairwell is the only area open to the sun, though it does not currently connect us to the outside world.  This limits our growing capabilities, but should sustain us.
Meanwhile Artuk also reports that the subject of my experiment, a war dog, has not been seen in some time.  I do not feel that she has what it takes to be a scientist...excuse me, !!SCIENTIST!!

26th Felsite
We stand in readiness to capture Princess.  I have called all personnel to the main lab.  Artuk is to bravely volunteer to connect a stairway to the surface, then to retreat to the safety behind our trap.  Princess's sublime hatred for all living things will ensure that she is ensnared.

17th Hematite
Princess seems strangely uninterested in rampaging into the fortress.  With great reluctance, I have authorized outdoor activities once more.  The fact is that we need wood, and perhaps all the pink, meaty humans above ground will entice princess nearer.
On reaching the surface, I find that the snow has thawed, and that the tentacle situation is a bit more... prevalent than previously thought.

I have advised out ladies to stay below ground.  At this point, even I am a bit unnerved.

*     *     *

Okay, I think I have a handle on surviving in a terrifying biome.  Once I manage to catch Princess, serious construction can begin.  Also, zombie horse is awesome.  Even RE only had dogs.

I'm kinda new to the forum thing, so I'm going to reach out for feedback.  Am I doing alright?  Is there enough interest to continue?  Anything I can do to make it more fun?

And if no one cares, can I continue to fill out the story to an empty room, or is that a forum faux pas?

One last note, anyone out there thinking of watching all four RE movies in one day is advised not to.  I'm sure the surgeon general would say that s*&% will make you sterile.

Normally I don't use graphic sets for my playing pleasure, but our tentacle-y goodness just begs for some representation, so I'll be trying it out.  Like so:

Yeah...we don't get the full effect in a still, with all the lovely writhing, but even so, yikes.

*      *      *

Albert Wesker's Journal, 26th Hematite, 1977

Success!  Princess has been captured!  On close inspection, he is uninjured from his battles, and apparently in good health.

Without his glorious and deadly shenanigans on the surface, we are free to gather edible plants and wood.  Also, we have begun construction of a trade depot.  We made need materials and specialized equipment to carry out our goals, and until I have an army of Princesses at my command, trade will be the best means to acquire these from neighboring settlements.

We will have to be mindful to avoid any other of these clouds, ready to seek the safety underground at a moment's notice.  Meanwhile, we forge chains which will hold the kittens in place for the clouds inevitable return.

12th Malachite

The cloud has returned.  I sound the alarm and await anxiously while the personnel gather in out main lab.

15th Malachite

The cloud has passed with no human infection.  Sadly, with no infection whatsoever.  Oh well.  I am confident that within the year, I will have improved versions of all our domestic breeds.

23rd Malachite

Test subjects...errr...migrants have arrived.  Their aid is quite welcome.  They will advance our understanding of the 'B-virus' enormously.  They do present some difficulty as we are still not flush with victuals.  I do, however, have some plans in to remedy this minor problem.  Eight new employees of Umbral have come, in all. Their training is...somewhat questionable.  A potash maker?  Most useless use of basic chemistry I've ever encountered.  Fish cleaner?  I respect your passion for anatomy, but we graduated from fish a long time ago, son.  Find yourself a stray and get in there!  Go crazy!  This lack of ambition would sadden me in other circumstances, but makes what I must do that much easier, as it is.

The arrival of all these new faces has reminded me of my esteemed colleagues.  We have been so busy with our own experiments, we have not spent much time together, of late.  I have decided to remedy this, and made a point today to chat with my...well, friends...I suppose.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
William has been analyzing the characteristics of Princess.  He hopes to further develop the potential of the air-borne substance, and is working day and night on the 'C-virus.'  I was very pleased with his equations, I cannot wait to see what results it yields.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Edward was quite bubbly.  Apparently he has become romantically involved with one of our interns.  I was a bit put off by this, to be honest.  I was about to give him the company lecture on professional relationships, but he eased my mind by sharing his plans for any offspring from the union.  Very proactive, that man, he's going places.  I wish him the best, and twins, if possible.  I do find his religious beliefs a bit silly, though, even for religion.  As far as I can tell the man prays to a breakfast cereal.  Oh well, Umbral is, after all, an equal opportunity employer!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Dr. Marcus was pleasant to talk to, and I could tell he enjoyed our conversation.  He hardly mentioned leeches at all, tending to mutter it as a sort of full-stop between sentences, rather than screeching it, as is his wont.  I feel the country air and lack of leeches has done him some good.  If any leeches are available in trade, I will certainly make sure to procure some.  His genius is exceptional, and with a proper subject I'm sure he is capable of surprising me.

As for my self, I am well.  I am busy with work, I must find a way to intensify the effects of the murk, and harness it for the glory and gain of Umbral!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I continue to dig, the body must be a fit host for the mind, after all.  Basement level four is nearing completion, it will one day hold the most extraordinary BOW we are able to produce.

Albert Wesker's Journal, 2nd Galena, 1977

I have begun work on a kennel, I wish to see if Princess may be made to obey me.  For safety's sake, it will be the fish cleaner who gets within range of those wicked hooves.  I confess I do not have much hope, there is much bloodlust in those knowing black eyes.

14th Galena

An Umbral caravan has arrived, bringing welcome supplies along.  I regret I have made only a few trinkets that I am willing to part with.  The true wealth is the knowledge we are gaining daily.  Still, some gems and crafts should be sufficient to ensure we survive out here.

I almost find myself hoping that a cloud will roll through.  It is not a good thought, but I cannot control the cloud, so I would simply be making the best of a bad situation, were it to befall the merchants.  Cages protect our home, so we would certainly acquire some fascinating specimen.  Although, I really must expand the belt of traps to be double or even triple thick.  Now that I think on it, one sprung trap would allow passage to any friends the intended specimen happened to have.

20th Galea

I have met with the Umbral liaison.  When asked what supplies we would see brought to our research center, I asked only for a variety of test subjects.  Dr. Ashcroft is meant to be trading at the moment, but has been distracted by every menial task along the way that he never paid heed to in the past.

Interesting.  The fish cleaner has taken it upon himself to go hunting, and is showing both impressive marksmanship and knowledge of canid anatomy.

I may have to rethink my opinion of him.  He may be useful in subduing any future reluctant subjects.

In the end, Edward did see fit to trade.  He exchanged some shiny rocks for lengths of rope, some metal bars, a horse, a mule, and a llama.  All of which will be set about the country side to breathe the fresh air.

27th Galena

Whoops, almost let the merchants leave without getting any food or drink from them.  Our need for alcohol has become severe, as the water here never thaws even in summer.

12th Limestone

A cloud of murk has come once more, and the merchants still at our doorstep.  I can hardly stand the anticipation of what is sure to be the most epic !!SCIENCE!! yet seen by man.

16th Limestone

The cloud drifted so close, but in the end it dissipated before catching anything interesting in its embrace.  Hooray?  For the merchant's sake, anyway.

19th Limestone

Four more migrants have arrived, and honestly I do not have the patience to manage so many.  Henceforth, all idlers are banded into a militia and sent to patrol the perimeter.  Be sure to tell me as soon as you see any murk guys, and then bravely stab it or something.

10th Sandstone

Well well well.  The head of the new militia has found herself locked in combat with a...grasshopper...man...thing.  And is performing well above expectations, especially when one considers I gave her no weapons or armor.

I cannot wait to see that woman as a husk!  I see that she is married, so as befits a man of my generous disposition and solid scientific ethics, I have ensured that her husband patrol with her, that they may never be seperated.

14th Sandstone

Our militia captain seems to be strangling a giant huminoid crow.  I really must buy that girl a drink, some time.  Though she is looking a bit worse for wear for it.  Which reminds me, with so many doctors around, perhaps I should get around to setting up a clinic one of these days.

1st Timber

Dr. Marcus has been elected expidition leader on the ever popular 'Leeches!' platform.  No comment.

On a less slightly insane note, excavation of sub level four has been completed, we begin B3 on the morrow.

*      *      *

Whew!  This may be the first time I have been frustrated by a lack of arbitrary death in DF.  Certainly the first time I almost ran out of food and drink.  I have the four canon characters safely tucked away with underground jobs, and am ready to endager the lives and minds of all the shiny new migrants.  Mwahaha.

Albert Wesker's Journal

11th Moonstone

Some time has passed since anything worth noting has occurred.  The skies have been clear of the dreaded mist.  Our hunters continue to improve their aim by wounding, but never managing to kill, the local wild life.  Food has begun to run low, but luckily our war dogs have seen fit to breed.  I have taken to keeping most of our work force busy outside as much as possible.  Begrudgingly I dug bedrooms for our new recruits.  I had not planned to, as they should be BOWs by now, but patience is a key virtue in science, if not !!SCIENCE!!

The blue prints for sub level 3 provided by Umbral prove...challenging to follow.  They seem to warp space in ways I am not familiar with, but Dr. Birkin and I are doing our best.

9th Opal

Still little to remark upon.  The new recruits have settled in and are seldom seen to be slacking off.  Food continues to be a constant struggle.  I long for the day that the cloud comes to lift the burden of so many devouring mouths from my shoulders.

25th Opal

I got tired of seeing people confused as to what they should be doing, I mean !!SCIENCE!! isn't hard.  Stitch something onto something else.  Take something apart and put it back together differently.  Inject something into something else.  Easy!  Heck, the pride of this Umbral facility, Princess the Doom Pony (tm) came together by accident.  Anyway...I've got them clearing the stone out of the basement levels, it's cluttering the place up, making it look trashy.  Can't have that, you never know when the Umbral muckity-mucks will be by for a surprise inspection.

(Editor's note: It wasn't until reproducing the Spencer mansion that I realized how messed up it was.  I'm talking well beyond the hallway to room ratio, or Tardi-esque architecture.  Asymmetry everywhere, problems of scale within one single room.  Trying to put it in a grid is somehow disconcerting to my Dwarf Fortress sensibilities.  I like to think the best of people, so I am imagining this was a deliberate effect to subtly unnerve the player.  Also, no matter how hard I try, I simply cannot include as many ellipses as the journal entries in the game...seriously...what's up with that???Who writes like that???)

25th Obsidian

Despite my objection of the danger given his importance to the core goals of The Mansion of Halls, Dr. Marcus has taken up hunting.  His skill with the crossbow has grown quickly.  I must admit, watching him stride through the snow-covered tentacles screaming 'Where. Are. My. Leeches!?' at the top of his lungs and lodging a bolt in a giant chinchilla's spleen is the very definition of 'metal.'  Or would be, were it not for Princess the Doom Pony (tm).  I guess Dr. Marcus is....alloy.  Yes, that will do.

Pictured: Dr. John "Leeches!" Marcus gives a spontaneous lecture on comparitive physiology.  Any questions?

Once he returned with his kill, which was very welcome in these spartan times I can assure you, I took a moment to make sure he was holding up all right in this leech-blighted wasteland.  He seems to be coping.  His only complaint was sleeping on the hard cave floor.  I did not feel it diplomatic to point out that he has a well appointed room, with a bed and everything.

One final note, one that I hesitate to write.  I have developed feelings for an intern.  Oh, Aquos.  Watching her make a bed inspires naughty poetry in my soul.  I want to make evil babies with her.  I'm talking sweaty...throbbing...heinous evil.  Abominations of the third kind.  Our love will be rated 'M'...for Metal!

Albert Wesker's Journal

1st Granite

Spring has arrived, marking our first year at the Hall of Mansions.  We have begun construction of a bridge to close over the entrance to the fort.  This led to an amusing few days of several employees trapped above ground while the lever was attached.  We still wait for the cloud to return.  Food is not a problem at the moment, thanks to the hunting prowess of Dr. Marcus.  Drink is getting quite low, however.  I have ordered any spare hands to gather plants and to funnel all brewables directly to the still.

21st Granite

A new species of humanoid has made an appearance.  It resembles a giant mosquito.  I am naturally interested in the local blood sucking fauna.  I wonder how the new 'C-virus' would react in such a subject.  Dr. Marcus has gone out to greet it.  His diplomacy needs a bit of work.

1st Slate

Our cook has begun preparing meals using our otherwise inedible seed stockpile, and plant gathering has allowed brewing to continue.  Still no sign of the husking cloud, which has me somewhat depressed.  I cannot be unhappy for long, though, as I finally worked up the courage to confess my feelings to Aquos, and she feels the same way!

5th Slate

More migrants have arrived.  Great.  Where is that cursed cloud?  Oh, there it is.  Lovely.

It has appeared in the north east, where it has never appeared before.  It misses my stationed soldiers and all wild animals.  I really wanted an evil bleack bear (shakes fist!)

On a related note, we are going to starve.
