DAMMIT MR BEARD EQUIP YOUR AXE

Mister beard will not equip his axe in fortress mode. it is not forbidden, it is not being used by someone else. it is sitting in a weapons pile, and it seems to think in the military equip screen that he is using it. What can cause this.

I have had problems with Winky, the head medical dwarf / swrdsdwarf, not using her weapon either.

How long has it been since you told him to equip his axe? Sometimes you have to wait and sometimes you have to make more of the item.

I currently have urist mcshortbus who not only doesn't use the proper axe, but is using an iron helm (when I have multiple steel helms) even though I have all my squads assigned to adamantine.

Maybe one of your woodcutters have claimed it and haven't bothered picking it up for some reason?

I got hit with the made-military-axe men-before-using dwarves as woodcutters bug, and couldn't cut trees as a result.  My solution was to delete all military squads in their entirety.  Remove all the dwarves, delete the squad, delete the equipment stockpiles, make new stockpiles, make new squads.  Then forbid anything you don't want the, to wear.

The green checkmark means an axe is available. Try stationing the squad or issuing some other order.

Mr. Beard doesn't have the Mining/Wood Cutting/Hunting labor enabled, does he?

Hmmmmm well he does not have any labors enabled that require a tool, though I'm not sure how to tell if a woodcutter has claimed the axe. I modded it so that dwarves could use/smith greataxes, and thats what I'm trying to make him use. I've actually got him "using specific weapon" on the only steel greataxe in the fort.

I assume said modding included changing the great axe's MINIMUM_SIZE to something less than 60000, because if it didn't, then there is no way any dwarf will ever be able to wield one (outside of Adventurer mode, anyways).

I've had similar problems with  military dwarves and gear.

Specifically: fresh  brand new embark. Immediately before unpausing I set up up my single military dwarf in a squad, and have him set to equip the weapon, breastplate and greaves, helmet and gloves.

activate the squad and give  him station orders. He goes and picks up everything except the helmet and one glove, and goes on station. I leave him there awile, then take him off.. he goes off to do some hauling (which is fine). I come back.. I du nno, ten minutes later maybe, and that damned helmet and glove are still sitting in the wagon. so I put him on station again, and he happily does so. sans helmet and 1 glove.

I've had this same sort of issue in almost all embarks, to the point where I dont even bother buying helmets, boots and gloves anymore.. the guy never wants to use them. They are not forbidden, there is no one else set to use them,... they just sit there, sucking up embark points. Heck, In one embark I lost my military dwarf in the first month to a badger bashing in his head.. Im assuming that helmet might have saved him >.>
