Is it possible to mod in a weapon powerful enough to actually fight demons without any other helpful things?

Demons as in "all the demons thatg get released" (Fortress mode) or "any and all demons one might encounter singly" (Adventure mode)?  This post (slightly necroing, so not sure as to the context) is in the Adventure Mode subforum, so perhaps I should assume the latter (worldgen glitches, excepted), but in the past I've successfully punched a demon to death, as an Adventurer.  You just need to be skilled and/or lucky enough with the chosen weapons (or physique) you already have.

(Admittedly, that demon I punched to death infected me with an all-over-boils situation, or similar.  Other than purely ranged combat that's not going to have been changed by using any particular uberweapon.)

But, anyway, perhaps crossbow/equivalent/throwing-materials and shield (and enough sneak to get your more debilitating shots in first) are enough...  If you count the shield as a "helpful thing", then I say you could do without it, I'm just considering its (proficient) use as protection against breath-like attacks, and if you're still good enough at sneaking until you render the demon unconscious, that probably isn't going to be necessary.

(If I get the gist of your question, which I may not.)

I found a demon that spawned in the exact same town I spawned in.

So for a good twenty minutes I kept making new adventurers and throwing myself at him. They all died.

You're going about it the wrong way- don't throw YOURSELF at him, throw all the other dead adventurers instead!

I once had a snow demon follower... i found him as a prisoner in a random peasants house. He was not very effective in combat but managed to outlive my adventurer. After looking in the legends it turned out he was, at one point the leader of the most powerful goblin civ in the world until he was overthrown by his vastly more baddass brother. He had 0 kills and ruled in a time when the goblin civ was young, weak and losing its wars. When the civ's capital was sacked he was taken prisoner by humans where he was incarcerated for 1000 years. Meanwhile, his brother took control of the gob civ, turned it around and conquered much of the world until he was betrayed by the goblins and slain around 600yrs later, with a final killcount of >10000.
