A novel releasing of the HFS?
« on: September 10, 2012, 10:48:59 pm »

Hello! There be spoilers in this post.

I was surveying a nice looking site (flat terrifying glacier) and decided to dig down and find the caverns. My dwarf somehow managed to dig directly into the HFS, and not through an candy spire. He just channeled straight through the semi-molten rock, which I didn't think was possible.

Here is the channel he dug:

The next level down, with "magma flow" in the centre:

Here he channeled through the semi molten rock

Finally ending up in the familiar circus:

When he hit the ground he was instantly kicked to death by an Iron Porcupine, but he had no injuries from channeling through the "magma flow" or through the semi-molten rock.
Is this normal, or some strange bug?

Is temperature off?

If temperature was off, sounds like a mild bug.

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Yeah, you can channel through SMR if you haven't revealed the tile underneath.

Incidentally it's much easier to go UP through SMR, as you can dig upward stairways through it until you hit a revealed tile (or regular rock).

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

This sounds exactly like what happened. When I tried to channel through a revealed tile of SMR it wouldn't let me. Thanks for the explanation!
And yes, temperature was on.

Another reason to make sure the HFS never gets hold of a copper pick.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

I thought this thread was about a demon writing a book without first being released from hell.

And then the demon could write an essay about the novel. And then an essay about the essay about the novel. Books are fun.

That would lead to oddly appropriate book titles like "We don't need brains where we're going."

"We don't need Third finger, left hand where we're going."

Or,

"We don't need Liver where we're going."

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Uhh... sorry about that. Let's just hope the Spirit of Snow clowns don't reverse engineer the one poor Urist left down there!
