Why does everyone use the default graphics?
« on: September 09, 2012, 08:07:26 pm »

Every screenshot or video I see on these forums use it. I can't stand it, the newer graphics pack is so awesome grass is green, dirt is brown you can see what things are, everything is not weird symbols.

But in the end I don't care what you use, use what you like. I'm just curious, seems like using a horse and buggy when there is a shiny sports car.

(Unless it is some hipster thing, then.....you are grounded)

Because for me setting up the graphics pack is a bit of a hassle, especially if you're modding and trying to train yourself into being incapable of seeing the ASCII as text. But that's just me, I don't know what about everyone else.

I think that you just broke an unspoken rule by mentioning that. ::)

I suppose that many of us just prefer to use the standard graphics because they make dwarf fortress feel like dwarf fortress. It is a part of the game.
As for some, well, they are just too used to using to reading the ascii to bother learning to understand "dumbed down" versions. (Graphics that are actually easier to read? Bollocks! Get of my lawn you young whippersnappers!)

Personally I admit that I started using Phoebus around half a year ago.

Well if you have the lazy newb thing installing it is one press of a button. But yeah I thought that would be a common answer that most people "grew up" on those graphics, opposed to me who used the new graphics from the start.

But these graphics are pretty shiny, take it from a ol' (oxymoron ) whipeprsnapper.

GOOMBAGEEK'S SCINTILLATING GRAPHICS ADVENTURE

"Oh boy, graphics pack! Now everything will be super cool and awesome! This door looks like a door!"
"Wait, the floor is doors too except I just wanted to smooth it!"
"The intersection of two brooks is also door!"
"This fearsome goblin stronghold is actually a pink cabinet!"
"Honeycombs look like boulders! Anthills look like wells!"
"Mugs are growing in my savage biome! My volcano looks like a beartrap!!"

Oh so that's why I thought graphics packs were a hassle. Sometimes the images get mixed up and there's nothing I can do about it.

I never said it was perfect, I was just wondering why some people like it, that is all. It just seems like some weird early computer age simulator. ( I see the irony ) I just like the new graphics beacuse it feels more like a world, I see dwarves running around as opposed to smiling faces. Which may be more cheery when thing go south.

I like the classic graphics because:
1) I like them. Once you get used to them, they're incredibly simple and easy to read.
2) My computer would have a heart attack if ever I were to use anything else.

Furthermore, I find the default graphics to just look a bit more... Dwarfy. Someone posted once that playing with the default graphics without Dwarf Therapist is akin to a bunch of drunk dwarfs trying to run anything.

I guess in the end it doesn't matter what graphics you use, but rather if you use dwarf therapist. Because if you don't you are one crazy muthaf*****!

Were it not for graphics packs, I never would have even attempted to play Dwarf Fortress.

As for why people stick with one tileset or another, my experience has been that adjusting to a different tileset is a painful process.

People generally favor a particular tileset because it just huts their eyes too much to change to another.  If you are acclimated to the ASCII tileset, then changing to a more graphical one is going to be a painful process, and vice versa.

Whereas each tileset has its own strengths and weaknesses, the relative differences of these is totally overshadowed by the cost of the change.

Even if changing tilesets gives you a +10 bonus to DF's enjoyability, this comes at a temporary -99 enjoyment penalty as you adjust.

In summary: The #1 reason why people like the tileset that they do is because they are USED TO IT.

Agreed unless you use it because you played DF before it was cool and graphic packs are too mainstream. Then as I said earlier you are grounded.

I guess in the end it doesn't matter what graphics you use, but rather if you use dwarf therapist. Because if you don't you are one crazy muthaf*****!

I've tried running some forts without Dwarf Therapist; the easiest way I have done that is by having immigrants come with skills set to unit type, by using the Dfhack autolabor setting, or by assigning all skills to all dwarves and just having specialists for skills that have quality modifiers. (Smithing, Carpentry, Masonry, etc.)

In the end I have found most of my forts fall to personal fatigue. I find that after a certain point, there are too many dwarves for me to keep track of and just lose it :/.

As for the graphics, I find the original pack ambiguous enough for me to imagine what is going on instead.

If graphics were an issue i wouldn't play DF at all.
I use default because i bluntly don't care.
The only visual tweak i use is to set it to 16x16 to make planning easier and leave it at that.
