Also, bronze colossus is actually C.

Isn't it both? Don't bronze colossi flash?
In the arena they don't, so I assumed that was their one true colour v :) v

I dont use a tileset because I like using my imagination. Even with graphics, the most depth of the game comes from reading text descriptions of objects and creatures. If I see a 'c' running across the screen, I can imagine it as a real cat running around, I can look at its description and see that it has black fun and green eyes.
If I had a tileset it would look the same as any other cat, it would be some elses interpretation of what the cat looks like. Same with anything else. With graphics a naked gobbo swordsman and a clothed gobbo swordsman look the same. When that goblin is represented with a simple 'g' then I can better visualise it as it is supposed to look.

For me, the more basic the graphics the more alive the world seems. To quote Sheldon Cooper: "It runs on the world's most powerful graphics chip, imagination!"

I love the graphics set due to that oldschool NES vibe:

I personally use the Mayday tileset as it is most similar to those oldschool RPG's.

I use the default graphics, because Dwarf Fortress isn't about graphics. It's about mechanics.

Graphic sets improve the look of the game, yes, but it's still a 2d pixelated game. A graphics pack might allow me to more easily discern a door, or a piece of armor, or a creature. But they also have their limitations. No graphics pack can represent actual randomly generated engravings on a wall, or encrusted gems on a sword, or physical differences of dwarves (beards, sideburns, weight, etc.)

Since I can't get graphics as accurate as I want, I don't bother making the graphics more accurate. The default tileset is sufficient, and my imagination (and Stonesense) fills in the rest.

I did switch the default tileset to 16x16 though, it bothered me that square buildings weren't square in the 'true' default setting. But that isn't a realism thing, it's a planning thing.

Amen brother.

And I grew up playing ascii-tiled ADOM, a roguelike that is a better diablo clone than a lot of diablo clones

It can't be a clone, or at least not an intentional one. The earliest version of ADOM came out in 1994. Diablo wasn't around until 1996. The similarities probably come from both games having been inspired partly by Dungeons & Dragons.

I still play ADOM. I've won twice now (without save-scumming), but I'm still working on getting a gnomish mindcrafter past the Tower of Eternal Flame. ADOM is highly recommended to anybody who likes roguelikes.

In a bit of irony, I actually find graphic packs...Hideous.

It doesn't flow, it looks splotchy, foliage is derpy as hell, and don't even get me started on icons for dwarves/animals/ect.

In short, hideous.

Every dwarf, every dwarven man, women, and child, that comes to our forts will die there; it's truly sad when you think about it. And we ask our selves, why? Why do we push forward, knowing this fate, that we are destined for failure? Because, this game grasps the concept of mortality. Some games you can never lose, but we all stop eventually, causing a 'death' to those game's 'worlds'. Dwarf Fortress gives us a definite end, knowing that we will leave that world eventually, and move on to more.

Every screenshot or video I see on these forums use it. I can't stand it, the newer graphics pack is so awesome grass is green, dirt is brown you can see what things are, everything is not weird symbols.

But in the end I don't care what you use, use what you like. I'm just curious, seems like using a horse and buggy when there is a shiny sports car.

I like the standard graphics because they remind me of the games I used to play... What is wrong with a horse and buggy?

I use a modded ASCII set so that it's square and perdy. The normal, rectangular one gets on my OCD. All the symbols are the same, I just trimmed it down to fit in my screen right.

But yeah. I wanted a roguelike, and although DF has proven itself significantly more than a roguelike (as in nothing like a rogue), it still reminds me of roguelikes.

I don't like reading a description and seeing the letter n represented by a hill and the period represented by a patch of grass. Looks stupid as all fuck to me.

Boils down to imagination for me. I don't need a graphics pack telling me what everything looks like to be honest. I prefer just to imagine what a goblin should look like, or a dwarf for that matter.

Because of the fact that everything looks like whatever it was supposed to look like - so no pink cabinets as dark fortresses and stuff like that.
Also, default is good, most of the time.

(except for DFTherapist - I couldn't just NOT to use it, and I don't even play Fortress mode, but I am going to)

This is one part of it. The default is simplistic and abstract and it works.

Tilesets try to be a little bit more elaborate but besides potentially being more aesthetically pleasing they only add unneccesary change and confusion. Most of the time they look horrible anyway.

I can't stand screenshots or videos with tilesets. There just are too many different varieties and I can't be bothered to decipher them.
Just get comfortable with the canonical representation or risk being unable to communicate with others.

This is the kind of situation that just can't be resolved to your satisfaction, Captain Willy.

No offense to the creators of the packs, but to me graphical sets seem like a mess of dull colors and tiny incomprehensible icons (I can't blame them about that part. You don't get much space to work with). In the classic ASCII, the existence of the black background for tiles and vibrant colors help me pick out single things.

Also, because I am a dirty hipster, but I digress.

I use ASCII because I prefer clear and aesthetic presentation of the information on the screen.
