That should do fairly well in offsetting the "Depressed about being Confined" modifier that usually comes with jail.

My prison consists of fully kitted living quarters surrounding chains, set up as 7x7 "rooms" with a view into the arena for the entertainment of the craftsdwarves. The walls and floors are smoothed and when I get around to it there will be engravings and statues also.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

but are there windows to let them watch the spectactle?

Unfortunatly I've yet to setup a jail, my military is lacking so I can't afford a police dept...

So my artifact bone chain Fordshoves the sorrow of emptying will stay in the mayor's apartments for the moment.

Hey, she said she likes it there, makes his living quarters decent. I won't be held responsible for what uses she makes of it (or what uses I'll make of it if I find her slacking off)

I really hope someone gets convicted in my fort soon, as i want to know how they feel about a jail of pure natural gold, engraved and all, chains of mastercrafted gold and golden floors...

Sadly my fortress is so stinking rich that i dont even have pickpockets or something...

If you are in need for criminals so badly, just sell some stuff that your mayor has forbidden for trading ...

My Prison consists of ten cages lining the walls of my king's throne room, so they can't really complain, methinks.

Bit harsh.
Yeah. Artifact ropes are one of the best ways of offsetting confinement unhappiness. Gold or platinum chains will work, too. And if you want your dwarves to survive confinement, you'll want to be using restraints because that way you can put stockpiles next to them so they can eat and drink.

I just got this:
Manthultenshed

This is an adamantine chain. All crafdwarfship is of the highest quality. Is decorated with nether-cap and encricled with bands of adamantine.
This object is adorned with hanging rings of native gold and menaces with spikes of native gold. n the item is an image of a gem in native
gold. On the item is an image of a titan in tunnel-tube.

834000 Urists.

I still don't know what i will do with it.

I had a super-nice dog bone chain (how does one do this?  I mean in the novel Aztec the protagonist encounters a master craftsman who carves a bone chain necklace from a single bone--doable since it was from a very large animal--but a restrain from a single dog bone?)  Oh, game, I love you so.
