Dwarf Mega-Constructs
« on: September 09, 2012, 03:18:30 pm »

Hello Bay12 forum community! This is my first post and I was hoping to get input on some giant projects I was hoping to do.  All of the projects would hopefully affect the world in a kinda-big way.

Trans-Continental Canal-  Imagine the Panama Canal, but 100 times bigger.
Trans-Continental Railroad-  Minecart track stretching across the world.
Hoover Dam-  Find the biggest river in the world, and dam it near the source.

Any other ideas and advice would be appreciated.  I hope to start soon and post my progress.

You plan to embark on 16x16 sites multiple times?

The Urist Dam would be possible, the others much harder. It you can find an isthmus thin enough to fit on a 16x16, you should be able to do the TCC; if you can find two bits of land within that distance and a big body of water between, you can make a huge bridge.

I've wanted to do a trans-continental railroad for some time now.

And you could technically get by with a 2x16 embark. (Only 73728 surface tiles).

True enough...but could you get the ends connected?

Sounds like an extreme railroad.

Power it and ride from one end of the world to the other as an adventurer! Test the effects of sleeping on minecarts!

Decided to start on the canal today, found a relatively small isthmus (16 or so region tiles).  Not long into the mining process, lost two dwarves to a cave-in.  A third just went insane from misery.

This is Dwarf Fortress though, so this is to be expected.  I guess that means things are running smoothly.

If you dam a river, would it affect the world map?

Try working in a way to generate power and transfer it to far off fortresses into the dam.

If you started at the dam and walked downstream, yes.
If you started at the ocean and walked upstream, nope.

If you start at the dam and walk downstream, and then turn around once the dam's area has been unloaded from memory, perhaps the water will have reappeared in the previously dry river. It depends on how Toady programmed the game. It's worthy of an experiment though.

New mission: Find river with many elven settlements along its banks, preferably with a volcano nearby. Embark at source of river. Obsidianize source of river except for one tile used to run a dwarven powerplant (not connected to riverbed). Use powerplant plus existing pump infrastructure to flood riverbed with magma. Elven genocide through water denial and magma replacement. Do the elven sites actually have elves in them right now? If so, visit them in adventure mode and throw them into the lava if it actually propogates downstream (unlikely, but possible? Do pumps/power keep going after abandonment? If so, maybe follow magma down from the fort to get it to work)

Wall off an isthumus. With a capital W. As in, A song of Ice and Fire.

Evil and cold biome on the northern side, gooder and warmer on the south. Migrants unfortunate enough to arrive from the north Wildlings aren't allowed through, and live their short, violent lives above ground, in wooden hovels. The wall should be huge and mostly made of ice.
