The material isn't iron, it's the first inorganic in the raws.Which happens to be iron.
wow nitpicky much?

Unless somebody messes with the raws and turns it into, I dunno, cotton candy, it doesn't really make a difference, now does it?

Anyway, fine, "first inorganic item in the raws".
Yes, and what about living in a world without nitpicks?

"I want to make a creature not move but still reproduce, how do I do that?"
"Use [IMMOBILE]."
"Actually, [IMMOBILE] prevents repro-"
"NOBODY ASKED YOU SHUT UP"

Used this trick earlier today to create an iron glove, confirming that impossible items can be created. If only we could find an in-game way to control what magic material is used, slade warhammers in vanilla df could become a reality...

You could edit the raws so slade was the first inorganic material. Technically it wouldn't be vanilla, but for all normal intents and purposes it would be the same. I wonder how a slade breastplate would compare to an adamantine one?

it would probably slow the wearer down so much that it would actually be worse than wearing no armor at all.

Can't wait to play with this. Now my moody clothier's might make something useful. I'm looking forward to having iron trousers that can be worn under my dwarves steel greaves!

Also this may be a worth while cheat if the item is too cheap (what it's a woodcrafter -- woods cheap I need an expensive artifact to make the noble happy [forbids wood])
Does the artifact get valued at iron's value or as if it didn't exist?

do remember to forbid all the wood they take, or else you'll just get a wooden artifact of a different kind of tree.

Why stop at just the breastplate? Get a full suit of artifact slade armor, including cape, and a candy sword covered with ruby... I present Darth Urist McMilitiaCommander.

I'm testing this out and masterwork slade armor blocks slashing attacks from cotton candy... I think more research is needed...

No

But if the fully slade covered warrior is grandmaster of everything even another grandmaster won't hit him. I had to finally use a leg lock and snap his knee to hit him. Once able to hit the slade whip did a major blow the first hit. Jamming his ribs through his heart. The direct head shot killed him.
