(Not) Solved: a bunch of dead dwarf's in cages.
« on: September 08, 2012, 01:22:18 pm »

how do I get them out.

They don't show up on a dump list, nor do they say they are in a cage when I go to build a cage, and x to see what's in the cage.

The only reason I know they are in cages, is I see dead corpses in my animal stockpile, and when I hit k, and then enter... I see the corpses...

How the f do my dwarf's get caught in traps in the 1st place?

If your dwarves are stunned or unconscious and fall on to cage traps, they can trigger and trap your dwarves. Then unless you release them they starve/bleed to death, depending on what knocked them out in the first place.

Upon further note... none of the corpses marked dumped are getting dumped...

I must have laid down 20 coffins by now, but none of these dwarf's are getting dumped from the cages...

thank god miasma doesn't seem to exit cages.

Ps i do have a dump zone designated

Do you have any dwarves with the Hauling -> Refuse labor enabled? If so, maybe you just have a huge amount of stuff marked for dumping - it could take a long time for them to get around to moving those bodies. Clear the dump flag on some items, or set a burrow that includes the cages and the garbage zone and put a couple haulers in that burrow.

Marking the bodies in the cages for dumping will cause them to get dumped in a refuse zone, and from there you'll have to unforbid them (stuff gets forbidden automatically after dumping) so that dwarves with Hauling -> Burial can take them to coffins.

Are the bodies forbidden?

Because they're being dumped, they would go into a garbage dump, not into coffins. Also make sure you haven't forbidden them (i.e it's "(dead dwarf)" and not "{dead dwarf}", {} brackets = forbidden)

My suggestion is to undump them, select a coffin for each of them and select the dead dwarf (i.e press q, select a coffin, select a dead dwarf).

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

UPDATE:
nevermind... it just looks like he's in there, cuz he's assigned...

ooh!  That worked!

assign them caged animals!  I.e. assign dead dwarf's that are in cages to tombs... voila.. instant gratification

Have you tried building the cages and linking them to a lever? When they deconstruct they should dump their contents on the floor.

I have not... since my many cages (as mentioned in the thread) show up as empty when I hit x... I'd have to guess which ones to build... I guess I could spend the time to build them all. and then link them... but I read on another forum, that that doens't do anything...

here is the way to do it. go to google and type df2012 mass pitting, hover over all of the cages and hit d - b - c
then once all of your items have been claimed go back and hit d - b -d once u have all of the cages turned purple.
go back over each cage with k and hit d to turn off the dump for the cage, this will make all of the items inside the cages get marked for dump. make sure you have a garbage dump area assigned and voila you have successfully removed all items from inside the cages. this also works for collecting seeds inside cages, and removing the armor and ammo from goblins caught in sieges.
