So every once in a while someone comes up with a 'most powerful ever' creature they modded, which is fun.  Of course, there's always limitations on how powerful you can make a creature before it stops being 'fun' and starts being 'boring and stupid'.  Anyone can make an unkillable creature by just making it have a single bodypart, fireproof, and bloodless, and anything with [SPEED:0] is basically a game-breaker.

This is where we pull out all the stops.  I propose a tournament to push Dwarf Fortress modding to its absolute limit.  Just how powerful can a creature be made before you start running into the limits of the system itself?  This will be a monster-vs-monster tournament, in which everyone who partakes has to come up with a creature that can defeat the current champion in the arena.

There is one rule, however, and it is as follows: Like a diamond which can only be scratched by another diamond, the ultimate megabeast must be capable of being killed, but only by another instance of itself.  A mirror match between two of the creatures must have a conclusion in order for the creature to qualify.  (And no attempting to cheat by giving it a syndrome class that only it can exploit.  I already thought of that, and it doesn't count.)

None of these creatures will be of any use in the actual game, but we should learn a good deal about modding in the process.  It'll be fun to see what comes out!

So.  Shall we begin?  Who wants to start?

You'd think that would work... but it seems that there is a limit to how big a creature can be.  I'm not sure what that limit is, though I intend to find out.

Anyway, interestingly both Shinryu and the Abomination are capable of quickly finishing mirror matches, but a match between the two takes quite a while.  I've seen the Abomination win once, and it seemed to be a lucky hit.  I'll call this one inconclusive.

NOTE: I'll be moderating this tournament as far as coming up with new rules is concerned (finding out exploits will be one of the main themes here, I'm sure), but I don't plan on doing all the testing.  I just thought it was a good idea, so I started a thread :P

Sooo...an ancient dragon and a flying boozecarp that breathes fire are evenly matched?

EDIT: How about we wait till a certain amount of megas come in, and then compile the results into a mod full of unstoppable megas? Maybe even make them playable in ADV.Mode.

I know not much about Final Fantasy series, but I like the "[NATURAL_SKILL:BEEKEEPING:16]" :)

Presumably any creature designed specifically to win will have fireimmune_super, paralysis immune, no pain, no stun, etc.; will lack has_nerves, etc;

so i would submit that the next stage in this arms race is to add syndrome attacks that are not fire/paralysis based in order to bypass these sorts of defenses (non-fire based emission attacks, unconciousness, phys_att_change, necrosis, speed_change, severe bleeding, stop breathing, etc.).  I suppose disease resistance 5000 will protect against syndromes, but imperfectly.  Anyone know of a perfect defense against enemy syndromes?

Are weapons and armor allowed?  I guess creatures can be so tough that armor is mostly redundant, but most wouldn't fare as well against a doppleganger of itself with an adamantine weapon of some kind and elite weapon skill.

The [NATURAL_SKILL:BEEKEEPING] is an old gag from my mod. I forgot to decheat my creatures after a night of fucking around with them, so I accidentally uploaded them with Legendary in everything. I remembered it, so pretty much anything that's a megabeast in my mod has Legendary skill in Beekeeping. Just a little history behind that. :)

There is a perfect defense. Take out CREATURE_CLASS completely, or make the creature inorganic. I suppose those are quite unfair..

To put that in perspective, the Thoht that it slaughtered in the thousands (and EVERY kill it made was a thoht) are a modded race that can go over a hundred rounds against the Abomination.....YEAH and this is just a bronze colossus....of course at this point its probably just a statue of the largest pair of balls ever cuz holy crap....

Actually, a syndrome without a SYN_AFFECTED_CLASS tag will affect any creature, regardless of CREATURE_CLASS.  At least it does with interactions.

Hm. A completely inorganic creature is partially unaffected. I know, I tried that just now with Alexander, a giant castle for those unfamiliar with Final Fantasy. He got a fever and felt pain, but didn't bleed, and his skin didn't rot.

Removing CREATURE_CLASS or just generally being cold enough to freeze the gas into crystals around you should work.
