Watch me fail horribly at Nightmare Mode
« on: September 08, 2012, 02:47:54 am »

Liberal Crime Squad 4.06.3. Nightmare Mode. We Didn't Start The Fire.

My goal: Play and win.

Outcome: Horrible death. Repeatedly.

Nonetheless, I've uploaded three different attempts with live audio commentary, for those who are interested in that sort of thing.

First Attempt (General gameplay!)

Second Attempt (Crack the vault or bust!!)

Third Attempt (Shoot everything!!!)

I was practically shouting at my screen when you didn't notice the option to make black turtlenecks.

After seeing this I'm going to say that you should probably put the warning message before encounters back in. Leaving it out is going to cause a lot of YASDs.

Am I the only person who can't get the first video to work?

I'm clicking on it, and it's not totally videoing at all.

Hah awesome.  You got shafted so hard by your own game.  This means its a true roguelike, props man.  Also, yes, Josephine Justice is the greatest founder name ever :)

You still can't move if the alarm is up... if I do change it back, I'll want it to work differently. Show up only after the actual enemies are visible, and say something a bit different depending on the context.

It's only really a problem when you accidentally steal something or mess with a door because you didn't notice people were watching. Maybe a warning when you're about to do that?

Yeah, you can't move, but how many of us have gotten their characters killed because their finger was stuck on the 'wait'-button for a little bit too long? Ideally the announcement should prevent all further repeated keypresses until the player stops pressing down the current key.

You could have an option on the main operations screen to activate/deactivate it. If I'm about to enter an area where I suspect to get involved in a fight, I'll be sure to have it 'on'. Otherwise, I probably don't need it and turn it 'off'. Seems easy.

Also - And I don't know why I haven't noticed this before, because I always play on Nightmare Mode - the introductory text for a Nightmare Mode game should perhaps mention that the Arch-Conservative nutcase already had their first term with which to wreck the country. That would better explain why every law is deep red at the start. Right now, the gameplay is kind of divorced from the story in this case.

Watching your first video also made me wish again that the 'Dodge'-skill would still give a bonus to firearms evasion, just a much smaller one (maybe a third of the melee value?) than in earlier versions, where it really did make you invincible.

Not to derail, but am I the only one who saw the first half of the title and was prepared for some good ol' Fox News bashing?

There is no longer a reason to hold down the 'wait'-button. In the latest version, it's not 'wait' as much as 'spawn an encounter'.

Oh! Well, I haven't actually played the latest version yet, but that's a good change! I usually wait until Jonathan's 'release a new version every few days'-drives exhaust themselves before I actually start a new game.

Hahaha... yeaah. Fixed that in the title, by making it just "watch me" rather than "watch Fox".

It's only really a problem when you accidentally steal something or mess with a door because you didn't notice people were watching. Maybe a warning when you're about to do that?

That's probably a good idea. "Really do this in plain view of the people here?"

Yeah, I pulled the notice that an encounter is coming up out because I was changing how wait works, so that you wouldn't need to scurry around all the time or hold the wait button. I now remember that in the lost 4.05 version, I also made it so waiting while a non-hostile encounter was present would cause them to wander off. So tapping wait twice would give you a new encounter without having to move.
