Hm, how do I get my dorfs to get stuff for brewing? My designated brewer didn't have anything to distill.

First, you have to start farming. Dig out a nice spot in the soil and build a farm plot using (b)-(p). You'll need a dwarf with the grower labor. For planting, you have to have seeds, preferably plump helmet spawn. You probably embarked with them.
When the plot is built, you can set the plants with (q). Choose each season (a), (b), (c), (d) and set all of them to plant plump helmets. Your grower will do the work.

Once you harvest plump helmets, you can start with the brewing.

Did you embark with anything? Something tells me you didn't grab a pick or plant food

I already had a farm, and some plump helmet growing to boot. Nobody grabbed it, and now I've got migrants and thus more mouths to feed.

Including a noble.

Oh boy.

Do you have a food stockpile? Is there enough room for more plants/barrels?
If so, maybe it is set to only take from links by mistake?

It's also easily possible to change the standing orders accidently. (Toggle dwarves to move food to stockpiles or not: o-f)

Yes, I have stockpiles.

Yes, all of the dwarves automatically fill the stockpiles with the relevant stuff as soon as I make them.

I made the food stockpile, and the plump helmets sat right there on the farm plot, completely ignored. I had the helmets wither a couple times.

Huh.  That's an interesting one.  If you have a standard food stockpile with room in it, they should harvest them.  There's not even any special labor required by default.

You normally would have to go out of your way to stop them, so I can only assume you did something unusual by a typo.  The two that come to mind would be toggling off (o)rders-(f)ood [solution: toggle it back]; or setting the farm's contents to "forbidden" [solution: reclaim with (d)esignate->(b)uilding & item->re(c)laim]

Barrels. You do not have any barrels.

To brew the boozes, you need:

1: A dwarf with [BREWING] enabled, under [FARMING] labor.

2: A [STILL].

3 An empty [BARREL]. These are made at a [CARPENTER'S WORKSHOP], and require [LOGS]. You CAN make barrels out of metal, but to me this is a waste, unless you have some specific purpose other than utility.

A tip or two: I usually end up with four stills in an end game fort. This is enough to run a couple constantly, with the other 2 there in case you need quick booze in an emergency.

Also, dwarves get very cross if they do not have booze. Water is nasty.

It is possible that you changed the standing orders. Hit "o" and check if [ALL HARVEST] is turned on. Should be "h".

All good points, lack of barrels would break the Brewing of course, but shouldn't cause *all* his plump helmets to wither in the field, the dwarves should at least pick enough to fill up the stockpile ???

Actually there are quite a few DF players that don't use Therapist. Probably more that don't than those that do.

I can confirm that I don't use it.  Though I hear it runs on Linux now, so maybe one day I'll try to wrestle that particular cave crocodile.

All harvest might do it, if it is off.

Something weird happened to my game. The world and its timeline stayed the same... but it went back to my original seven dorfs and my base was gone.

FUUUUUUUUU

Well, at least I have a better idea of what I'm doing now. New fort!

EDIT: Is it possible to order specific dorfs to do specific things?

Because I only have one miner and one woodcutter. This is going slooooooow.

No, not orders to specific dwarves, but you can enable those labors for more of them.

(v)iew/(p)references/(l)abor
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Labor

of course you'll need more picks and/or axes.

I ran out of plants and seeds on the first try. Again!

I prepared carefully, and I have three miners, three woodcutters and an angler. I seem to be short one axe, though.

Ah well, he can carry stuff to the stockpiles.

Edit:

ARMOK HELP ME NO FOOD LEFT

How do I butcher yak/kitten?

Winter's here... yep, this fort is beyond screwed.
