We could make scrolls from animal hide, ink from plants and trees.
a Codex is just a scroll cut up and fitted with binding and covers.
Books should be easy enough, just more work.
But what to write in them?
Professions to pass on skills?, Lurina to write on Kitsune culture? Rosa 50 shades of frustration?

Lurina could record some kitsune legends. James probably could become a decent writer, he's got the free time. The others could write about their own professions, and perhaps Rosa could surprise Grant or Thomas with some well-written poetry.

Lunira and James return to the village, having spent the time away talking and learning as much about each other as possible.

James takes some materials from Coleman's farm and clothier, and goes to his office. Meanwhile, Lunira gathers everyone together.

She reports having found a small river oh her way back, her ears more sensitive than the average human allowing her to hear the flowing water. It's not too long of a trip, and everyone goes to it to fill water bottles, clean off, and see what the fuss is about.

Everyone cleaned off without incident, and came back happy but wet. Coleman mentioned something about irrigation, and engineers.

When everyone had returned, James left Lunira a pile of books and left to go to the river himself.

"Ahem... I know I'm not normally the one for public speaking, but James decided we should pool all our knowledge. That's why we made these, blank tomes for everyone to write in. You can write whatever you want, just know that what you write will influence our future. Thank you."

Lunira handed out the books, and writing pens made from feathers.

"All right. We'll need a place to put various books- James couldn't decide on a tavern or a library, so we may end up with both. I'll help chop some logs if anyone wants me to."

Thomas stepped up. "No, I'll get yer logs. I can write before I get some sleep."

Everyone else went back inside, as it was getting somewhat late. Grant caught Lunira outside, however.
"Hey. I heard about what happened."
"Oh, the goblins? It was nothing. I chose to put myself on the line for everyone and I did."
"No, not that. I mean, that was part of it, but I wanted to hear it from you. What was it like?"
"Exhilarating. I admit, i was a little afraid, but... Combat is what I do. I might not always like it, but it's what I'm good at and it gets adrenaline going."
"It's the same here. I'd have loved to have been there, but I've also been wanting to go hunting, so..."
"It's no problem."
"If you want, we can teach each other some stuff about combat. I don't know a lot, but I didn't think you were a sword user last time I saw you."
"I wasn't, I'm not really one yet."
"I'll be glad to help."

As everyone was getting ready for bed...

Coleman began writing a book, entitled "Become Someone".

In the book, he writes about his becoming a farmer from a clothier, and other plans for his life.
In the book, he draws out a few ideas for an irrigation system. The first one shows a great aptitude for engineering, a large aqueduct system that could provide the town with water- if they could make a waterwheel and some pumps. The second one he drew is a sort of gravitational system, where rainwater funnels through a sort of snaking pattern through the fields. In the third design, rainwater is captured in open barrels and allowed to leak extremely slowly from a hole in the base, watering the plants.
In the book, he lays out a table of different cloths and leathers and what they're best used for.
In the book, he writes about current events, and his feelings for Ashley.

Lunira began writing her book, "Guided By Moonlight."

In the book, she writes about kitsune culture as a whole and her village's unique customs.
In the book, she writes about the differences of a kitsune and a human, and their similarities.
In the book, she writes about her quickness to marry James, and how in her old village marriage was set at birth.
In the book, she writes about how to properly use and draws out basic stances.
In the book, she writes a small poem entitled "Luna", a poem about herself and the origins of her name.

Rosa began writing her book, titled "Heated Forge".

In her book, she wrote about being bitter that love had struck all but her.
In her book, she wrote about the many weapons and techniques of metalworking she uses.
In her book, she compares metalworking to love, the heat, time, and care put into each part.
In her book, she mentions Grant as a potential love interest, but denies it in her own writing.

James began writing his book, titled "Wise Man"

In his book, he wrote about how difficult being a mayor was at first, before becoming wiser.
In his book, he wrote about his favorite kinds of booze.
In his book, he wrote about kitsune, especially Lunira.
In his book, he wrote about his favored methods of writing a good speech.

Ashley began writing her book, titled "Foundation"

In her book, she wrote about how to identify different ores and precious gems.
In her book, she wrote a small poem without a name comparing her normal, stonelike exterior and her inner love for Coleman, a prominent line "Stone Hard, Silk Soft, My heart feels through the dust."

Grant began writing his book, titled "War"

In his book, he wrote about how life is a constant struggle, and could be considered a neverending war.
In his book, he wrote about favored guerrilla tactics.
In his book, he wrote about maintenance of ranged weapons.
In his book, he wrote about the properties of different weapons.
In his book, he wrote about proper combat in various situations.
In his book, he wrote about how to camouflage oneself in any situation.

Thomas began writing his book, titled "I Am"

In his book, he wrote a short introduction about himself
In his book, he wrote about hunting methods
In his book, he wrote about how to butcher a great number of creatures

GM Turn-

Elsewhere in the world, in a hidden away temple, 12 hooded figures stood around a symbol engraved upon the floor. The one at the top took a bottle of red fluid from his robes and poured it out onto the symbol. Together, the people began to chant in an unknown language.

The red fluid began to glow and the ground shook. The symbol fell away, revealing a hole into Hell itself. And out poured demons, lesser and unable to do anything of importance to the world. Others emerged after the floods of cattle-eaters and tricksters, ones that could disguise themselves as gods, or even other humans, and others still after them with powers that could not be understood by even the gods.

The people, who had been promised a great reward, lay in pools of blood. They had opened a gate into one of many Hells, this one a large, advanced one capable of bringing the still young world to it's knees.

Grant and Lurina should go out scouting. Ash should dig for mire ires and gems. Tom should cut logs like he said he would. Coleman and Rosa should start planning the new buildings with James before the former two start laying the foundation(s). James would then pace about, helping where he can and trying to find something innovative to help with.

The next morning, Grant and Lunira go out early before breakfast and begin to scout out the area around the village further.
Meanwhile, Tom began to chop down more trees.

Ashley began to mine once more, digging in another new area.

Coleman, Rosa, and James went out to a patch of open land, where they discussed the future of the village.
"I was thinking", started James, "We should build a sort of attraction to this village. We could build a library, a tavern, or, well, anything that sets us apart from other towns."

Coleman thought for a moment.
"I was going to suggest an irrigation system for the farm, but that's not much of an attraction. What if we were to build a wall, for protection? People would come for the safety..."

Rosa, on the other hand, thought differently.
"What about an arena of sorts? A place for people of all trades to come and compare themselves to others. Warriors could fight and artisans could craft, and days of celebration would be held here for all manner of civilized peoples to watch and participate."

James responded.
"Interesting you'd say that. Lunira was telling me about a similar thing in her culture, where great warriors would come challenge one another in fights for the public to see. Defeat was when one contestant gave up or could not fight any more. It's amazing our people hadn't heard of it."

"Still", began Coleman, "We need something at least semi-functioning first. I would love to have such a place, but we have not the resources nor the expertise to start such a creation. We have not the knowledge to form a library, and we have not the surplus to create a tavern. What about this?"

Coleman opened his book and showed the group his aqueduct plans. It would require 200 blocks and 50 logs along with mechanisms, but could provide water in every form to people and throw the water back into retention ponds or the river.

Rosa looked over it, and added her insight:
"That waterwheel is a nice touch, but this needs three pumps. I can make the mechanisms with metal so that it's easier for the waterwheel to turn."

James also had ideas.
"We can run that along the edge of town as it stands now, then turn it to head back to the river. That'll promote growth and be quite the marvel!"

Ashley had been busy. She'd been mining nonstop into the side of a mountain, gathering little more than dust and 75 units of marble and a small chunk of pink garnet. She'd kept going deeper into the mountain, slowly digging a large section stopping only for drinks.

By the time she had mined everything out she had 100 units of marble, which she started working on to make 100 blocks of marble.

Thomas had stocked up a total of 60 logs. He took a long break afterward.

On Grant and Lunira's scouting trip...

"..."
"Hey, Grant. Can you hear that? It sounds like someone's calling for help."
"I can't, but you can hear better than I can Lead the way."
"... Help..."
Lunira and grant rushed down a hill to see who was calling out.
The turned around the corner of a rocky cliff, and there was a human girl trapped in what appeared to be honey.
"A-ah, please, help me..."
"Hold still. I'm going to try and get you free."
"Thank you..."
Grant tried to clear away some of the thick honey, as Lunira tugged on the human's arms. Eventually, she was worked free, and she collapsed under her own weight.
"So tired... Thirsty... Haven't had anything but honey... for days..."
Grant offered her water, and she emptied his canteen.
"T-thank you. H-how did you know I was here?"
"We're part of a village close to here. I'm surprised there's anyone out here."
"There's a road not... not far from here, that way. I was travelling through a town when they're demon law-giver attacked me. Apparently they have a thing against traders, so I ran... I got strung up here. I'm pretty sure that they were going to come back..."
Lunira and Grant escorted the still weak trader to the village.

The trader spoke with James.
"Hah... I'm giving up trading. I'm an OK engineer, but my real talent is with jewel working."
"We're glad to have you, but, how did you get here?"
"There's a village about a half day's travel from here ruled by a bee demon. It's posing as one of their gods, but I figured it out, so it trapped me in the forest and left me to die."
"You must be very weary. Just give me your name and I'll give you a bed, ok?"
"Thank you... My name is Marie... There's another trader that was with me in the forest, and I think he managed to get away... but... There's nowhere for him, because all our things were in the village. If you'd find him, I'd be so happy... He's... my husband..."

A little later, the trader was asleep. It would seem that her tormentors tortured her in her sleep as well as in her waking moments.

"Well, we should probably go looking for her friend. It would be horrible if we left him out there with the chance that bee demon comes back."
"What if it comes here? We aren't ready for anything like that."
"I'll stay here, Lunira. You go look for it. You defended the town alone once, I can take it now."
"Well... OK."

Ashley should come up to the surface and join Cole in starting the neat water project, built with marble and the best wood we can find from our stock. Rosa should make the requisite metal mechanisms and help James with Marie's therapy...I'll leave the rest to others.

Ashley and Coleman get together to begin work on the aqueduct, moving the marble and cutting it, before making the components that would form the base.

Rosa gets to work on the mechanisms, truly tested by having to make such precision instruments. However, the three iron bars were soon converted into everything that the waterwheel pump assembly would require.

James and Grant went to check on Marie. She had slept very little, but had eaten and drank enough to begin healing.
"Hey, you sure you're OK?" James spoke softly.
"Y-yeah... I'll be OK. A-any news?"
"No need to be afraid, dear. We sent Lunira out to look, and I think Thomas followed behind her."
"Thanks... I'm still so very sleepy, but every time I close my eyes my imagination takes over..."
"I'd like to do something, but we don't exactly have an apothecary. If it helps, know I'm outside guarding the town." Grant spoke for the first time.
"Thanks... but it's not me I fear for..."

James offered to stay with her for a bit, and she tried to sleep again.

---

Meanwhile, Lunira and Thomas had begun the hunt for Marie's husband. Starting at the area Marie was, it wasn't long before Lunira's ears perked up again. However, it wasn't a cry for help, but rather...

An evil, chittering noise, followed by a familiar voice.

"You came back, with a friend this time."

The Bee Demon Rzugal appeared before the two.
"You're looking for that trader's husband, aren't you. It's good for everyone here I'm not authorized to kill anyone outside of the village or you'd all be mincemeat, but... Unfortunately I can't do that. Here."

The demon made a movement with one of his six arms, tearing a hole in the air. Cries of the damned and the smell of brimstone escaped it, and a man was yanked out of it.

"Take him. We didn't have much time together, but I made the most of it. Next time you'll have to deal with Boss."

And with that, the demon disappeared, as though he blinked out of existence.

The man spoke.
"Thank the gods, I'm back in this life."
Lunira was confused. "What?"
"I was in Hell. Literally. That demon caught me and... I'd rather not re-imagine that."
Lunira was still confused, although she began to grasp the situation. In her culture, the afterlife was nothing more than a winding path, the end of which was rebirth.
Thomas, however, was more sympathetic.
"Here's my canteen. Guess the wounds heal themselves eh?"
"Only on the way out."
"Eh, come on with us. You're wife's waiting."
"Please, let me see her."
"Calm down, we gotta walk back to the village."

Continue work as planned. After the husband recovers and is reunited with his wife and introduced to everyone, have him watch the farm. Lurina and Grant should go scouting, and Tom should hunt for food and a companion like always.

But we should make traps and more weapons even if there just sharp stones on the end of sticks. Or just point sticks. Traps can be pit traps with point bits of wood daubed in crap to make the goblins get the pint.
