Village Evolution
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:07:48 pm »

The game is simple: There's a small village somewhere. Your job is to influence it.

The setting is randomized. Time is perspective, but techs will change.

The players make suggestions about what the villagers should do with the world around them, and the GM (me) changes the world by turn.

For instance, last turn I chose to start a mild rainstorm and reduce the population of wild boar.
The villagers then decide to start farming, which adds to the amount of land they have. They have less worries about food, and their village can grow in size.

Growing in size is your ultimate goal, because as you grow you learn about the world around you. Eventually, your village may send out adventurers, to mark their names into the land forever.

All right, let's get started.

---WORLDGEN IS GO---

Your village is nestled in a valley with many plants and a fair amount of trees. The surrounding land is raised, forming natural hills. It is warm here, and water rarely freezes. Animals are abundant, the most common ones are boar, rabbits, wild chickens, and badgers.

Your village is a simple one, comprised of a single noble house, two lodgehouses, a well, a vault, and a work area. You have a loom, a smithy, and a kitchen/butchery in the work area.

There are 6 villagers living here now. One Mayor, a noble. One Hunter, who tracks down food with his crossbow and brings it back to eat. There's one clothier, who makes clothes for the people from skins. There's one miner, who digs for ores in the surrounding area. There's one blacksmith, who works any metal the Miner can get. There's one Soldier, who uses a sword to guard the village.

Your villager's religion is centered around a single god with many lesser gods. Your main god is a symbol of nature, trust, and growth. The lesser gods have various celebrations and days of reverence.

You don't have any known neighboring civilizations.

---WORLDGEN DONE---

GM TURN:
All right, nothing too strange out the gate just yet.
A very large, white, fluffy cloud passes under the sun for minutes on end, shading the small village from the sun for a bit.

You can command each villager individually, or get them all to do a singular thing. You have no need of anything just yet, so it's probably a good idea to explore and learn- but you could also build, mandate... whatever.

PLAYER TURN START!

The villagers all run in fear, because they know the cloud is not a cloud! Then they realize it is just a cloud, probably.
The blacksmith returns to smithing some farming tools, as the soldier waits impatiently to see something moving he can kill. The clothier, a young man with little to do, goes into the mines to hit on the miner, a lady with toughened beauty in his eyes. The hunter tries to find a companion in the woods, or at least some food.

I like how the villagers are already mental, but yeah, thanks for setting up genders.

So:
Mayor: MANLY
Blacksmith: Female
Soldier: Male
Clothier : Male
Miner : Female
Hunter: Male

I chose the Blacksmith and Hunter, btw, just for this post and gender balancing.

The real question, ladies and gentlemen, is how our village will thrive with such a limited gene pool; inbreeding will ruin us in but a few generations if we don't start working on getting immigrants to move in!

I say we just make another one female, to balance out.  Also is this based solely in reality or is there fantasy elements?  Or will we have to find that out for ourselves?  I'd post a command but GreatWyrmGold pretty much said everything.

Simple: Have the hunter look for more groups one we find something to entice them with.

You could say, for instance, what the miner is looking for, or what the mayor does.

"The villagers all run in fear, because they know the cloud is not a cloud!
The hunter tries to find a companion in the woods, or at least some food."

The villagers look up at the cloud. It looks fluffy, so they decide to not panic.

The smithy decides to work on some new farming tools using some stockpiled ore. They turn out pretty well, with bismuth bronze and regular wood handles. She makes a hoe, a pitchfork, a shovel, and a trowel.

You can now create a small farm!

The soldier patrols around the town. He dosen't even spot a single badger. He remembers to ask the Hunter to take him on a trip eventually, lest he go insane of boredom.

The miner hits a vein of tetrahedrite when the Clothier shows up. He nervously watches for a moment, then asks:
"Is your clothing holding up well? I didn't really think to make anything extra-durable, so..."
The miner dropped the pick and wiped sweat from her brow.
"Surprisingly well. I prefer a lighter cloth anyway, dosen't trap heat."
"That's good. I'll keep that in mind for next season. I guess I'll talk to you later."
"Sure. Thanks for checking up on things."
The miner went back to mining, going a little faster at it.

The hunter goes out into the heavier forests. He kills a single badger, and wistfully wanders. He was almost out of bolts, and about to head back, when he heard something behind him. His instinct was faster than the rustling, and he turned to face...

A kitsune. Before the hunter had come to settle the new village in right, he had lived in a rural area known for it's cooking (which he enjoyed very much.) The Kitsune had been a friendly race, ready to trade at any time and more than willing to help a valued partner.

This kitsune was female, made obvious by not only her humanoid features but the ring present on her ear: All females had one, nobility had two, and female rulers got three. She had one gold ring in her ear. Her fox ears and tails were silvery with white tips, and she had a silver spear slung across her back.

"Ah? A human! Where'd you come from?"
"Settlin' in down from here a bit. Your people close by?"
"Nah, I'm on the run. I managed to make a noble family angry at me, and... yeah. If you knew what race I was, you also know about our nobles."
"It's the same with every race. Know anything about the surrounding area?"
"Not really. There was a cave or something a while back, but that's a ways out. Anyway, I hate to ask, but do you have room in your village?"
"Depends, we need working hands."
"I'm good with a spear, and I can make odd-and-end things out of bone. I even have my own spear."
"All right, I guess that works out. We don't have a leader yet or anything, so I don't see whats wrong with bringing you back with me."
"My name is Lunira, by the way. What's yours?"
"Most folks call me Dan. Dan's me whole name, you know. Parents never had a last'n."

The kitsune should be brought into the village and everyone should introduce themselves to her, thereby getting names. Then, she should see if she can get the badger's bones turned into more bolts for the hunter. I'll leave the rest to others.

I suggest also having the Mayor try to woo her. Outbreeding is the inverse of inbreeding, so the children would be more likely to get beneficial genes from both sides and species. Plus their father would have charisma and their mother military expertise, which would help raise them into capable leaders and/or adventurers.

It's as likely that he kid would get all the bad traits of humans and kitsunes as all the good. More likely, the kid would getsome of each.

There's quite a sizable difference, considering it's outbreeding. The problem with inbreeding is that recessive genes would be more common if the DNA was similar. With outbreeding it's the opposite, where dominant genes are more common, and dominant genes would cancel out matching recessive genes.

Alternatively, we could turn out to be terribly xenophobic a people, a small price to pay for taking the first step towards becoming The Empire.

Dominant is not always good. Anyways, we're also talking about hybridizing two species.
I'm not against it, just...be wary.

Presumably either the Warhammer one or the WH40k one.

I think we should start making a farm. Also I think the Galactic Empire in Star Wars was fairly biased towards humans.
