Mispronunciation
« on: September 03, 2012, 06:17:33 pm »

I'm a huge fan of proper English. You know, speaking clearly, using the correct word for situation instead of whatever you think of first, things like that. Pronouncing words correctly is a very big point for me.

While watching an episode of Lost Girl, the characters had to deal with a Lich; a nasty undead necromancer of sorts. They pronounced it as 'lick'. I don't know how to explain my seething desire to bash my head against the wall every time they said it like that. I found myself mumbling, "Litch" throughout the episode.

So, I decided to dedicate a thread to horrible, silly or otherwise notable examples of bad pronunciation.

It's pronunciation. That aside, the Scots word loch. The ch is pronounced as in the German ich. Not pronounced like lock.

I will never forget the people on Call of Duty 4 for who pronounced Martyrdom as "MART-E-DOM" and whom insisted, nay, would fight to the death in the insistence that their pronunciation was correct and that the real one was made up by the mentally deficient.

That's embarrassing. Ninja edit, activate!

How do you pronounce a German ich? It's a sort of silent C, right?

Martyrdom as "MART-E-DOM"

It's not pronounced like that?

Martyrdom as "MART-E-DOM"

It's not pronounced like that?
No. "MART-R-DOM" is the correct one. Martyr is pronounced "MART-ER", after all. Most people also kind of roll the "r" to make it sound slightly like "y" is before it.

The two pronunciations are, in my accent at least, pretty much identical.

E: unless you meant the E in mart-e-dom like the E in chuck-e-cheese

Yes, like the E in Chuck-E-Cheese. More importantly, like the E in Marty, which was what these CoD players were seeing and assuming to be the first syllable of the word.

None of this thread is making me feel very good about the state of education in Western society.

I came to terms long ago with the fact that I'll always have a noticeable accent so I don't even bother anymore.

I used to pronounce "convoluted" as "convulted" before someone wen't "huh?" when I said it.

I do that with a lot of words, it seems. A sufficiently long word gets mangled in my head as to its pronunciation if I've never heard it spoken in real life, then when I go to say it I mess it up.

As far as accents go, mine likes to drop t's. Cotton is pronounced "cah-uhn" by me; the t is replaced with a glottal stop.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I gave up on it at least a decade ago since before I graduated high school.

Which reminds me, next year is the 10-year reunion; I wonder how well they've developed over time?

Milk is not pronounced "melk." Pen is not pronounced "pin." Pillow is not pronounced "pellow."

I don't give a damn if it's pop or soda or Coke to you, but I will go to jail one day for slapping somebody who mispronounces any of those words in the way I've listed.
