You get up, leaving your office, heading towards the small, quite under-stocked infirmary. Entering through the door, you find Lilith lying on one of the beds, and Reg sitting on another one while Mark probes his chest wound.
When you ask how they're doing, Mark swivels around, his hand unconsciously heading towards his hip, where you think there might have been a sidearm once. Flustering slightly due to his paranoia, he says, "Well, I'm fine, Reg is a little worse than he'll tell you."
"What about Lilith?" You ask, concerned.
"She's fucked up, boss. Not going to put it lightly. And we have a shitty medical supply here, Reminds me of being in the trenches again. I had dirty shirts and swamp water to fix men up with, and the stuff we have here isn't much of a step up. We could use an upgrade. Otherwise, we're talking about her being running in months, not days. An upgrade would cost around... 4500 credits?"
You consider this for a moment, after promising you will look for some medical supplies, he gives you an idea of what he needs, warning you it will not be cheap.
So with that done, you turn to Reg, who was the most hostile towards the new recruits.
"What's up with the look you gave the new guys?"
"They're Sol." Reg spoke gruffly. A true man of many words.
"We saved them." You point out.
"Reg has a point, they're Sol. Not Sol-born, or Sol citizens, fresh, Sol, soldiers. I'll hand them a knife and ask them to fight with me, but don't expect me to offer my ass to them."
Reg looks at Mark, annoyed from the lack of support, and you feel the same way.
You explain to Reg that this is a mercenary regiment, and that nationality doesn't matter, you are all here for a paycheck.
Reg grunts, and starts to change the subject. "When can I shoot something?"
Mark starts to speak, "Possibly in a day or tw-"
"I didn't ask when
you thought I could shoot something. When are we going on a contract, boss?" Reg asks, pushing Mark back.
"Depends, haven't sealed one yet." You say, and Reg growls, annoyed.
Later, you head over to the A7, finding the two Jon's examining the bird. Funny how you didn't notice that they have the same name.
You walk up, and the pilot turns to you, saying, "You still use the second generation engines? And this is one of the faster mercenary models?"
You nod, and the mechanic is sighing loudly. "Here he goes aga-"
"Listen, the worst scout ships in the Sol navy use third generation. They are half the size, and work ten percent better than the second generation. Could help free up some room in this bird."
Perfect, you think. This is what you were seriously about to ask for.
"If you get one, it would be better all around." He finishes.
You ask how much one costs, and he responds with a whalloping 5000 credits.
"It will free up space for at least three more people, it's more stable, and it produces more energy. One problem is, when you buy one, it's hard to fix, but since they are so reliable, not a problem."
"But, we don't have enough money for an engine if we upgrade the med-bay." You mutter to yourself.
"Oh, we have a medical bay?" The pilot asks, and then says, "How's the woman?"
The mechanic, Jon, narrows his eyes, and starts to ball a fist, and right now, you feel about the same way.
"She won't be returning to combat any time soon unless we get some proper supplies. Highlanders never mentioned we had to work with shirts and swamp-water." You say, making a reference to Mark's complaint.
"Oh." The pilot says, and turns around, clearly embarrassed.
But it's clear, you really have one thing to choose, a better engine, or medical supplies to help get Lilith on her feet.
