trouble building lever connection
« on: September 02, 2012, 04:59:22 pm »

So, I'm building my very first in-cave reservoir and decided to do so by diverting the nearby river.

Part of my design involves creating a floodgate along the mined out tunnel that will carry the water source. I've created and installed the floodgate, then created a lever over in the main fortress. When I try to assign the lever to the floodgate however, the construction becomes suspended and the dwarves complain that they cannot complete the task.

Details:
-I have plenty of stone mechanisms to use
-the lever is on the same level and is against a wall but otherwise fully accessible (I can have a dwarf access it to pull the lever (to no effect of course, but they can do it))
-the floodgate is located right next to a downward slope (the water would come in and then pour down into a reservoir)

It SEEMS like the slope is the problem? Dwarves can walk up and down them, I thought, but maybe they cannot access anything right on the edge if they are approaching from the slope? I cannot even seem to get them to remove the floodgate!

This all might be moot since my first invading army (not just raiders) showed up seconds ago. Still...good to know for the future. Thanks!

...Could we see some screenshots or sketches or something?

Does the dwarves really have trouble taking down the floodgate? That might be the issue, not being able to 'get' to it properly to hook it up. Though I don't know why a ramp would do that, myself ( nor have I tried to build such thing abutting a ramp ).

Sorry, I was trying to be descriptive enough; I am lazy like my stupid, non-lever attaching dwarves!

                                                      xoo[river]

L = lever
z = one z-level down (the channel/cistern I've dug out (there's more to it, just the relevant part is depicted)
F = Floodgate back up on the same level as the L
x = mined out tunnel at the same level
o = not-yet mined river access

Note that the dwarves cannot access the floodgate from the other side, hence my theory that the problem is the access through the slope up to the Floodgate.

Sequence of events:
-made mechanisms
-carved out mine tunnels of whole setup (leaving two "o" spaces)
-channeled out the z area
-placed the lever
-attempted to connect the lever, start getting error messages

If I've interpreted the sketch properly, the problem is simple: your dwarves have nowhere to stand after they reach the floodgate level, which is causing the job cancellation spam. However, some good screenshots should be more conclusive than one person's conjectures.

try moving it back a square so they can stand on flat ground rather than ramp.

I wouldn't think that it would matter, but it might.

Since you can't remove the floodgate, try replacing the ramp with a wall, and then building a new ramp next to that. That way they can stand on the wall (from that perspective a floor) instead of the ramp while they work.

Or instead of a ramp, try stairs.
