Do non-tamed animals disappear when you abandon?

So I have captured a giant sponge. if I abandoned my fort, would it:
1) disappear or die if left in a cage?
2) disappear or die if left in a pool of water?

It should be fine if left in a cage, and would probably disappear if you released it first.

It will escape from its cage - if it is a historical figure (e.g. a captured megabeast), then it will also be sneaking around waiting for you to find it...
