Why do you play with the rectangular tilesets?
« on: September 01, 2012, 02:11:13 pm »

Personally I find them (both the original and any other fanmade ones) completely unappealing, the rectangular shape makes everything look very weird. So I've always used the perfectly square tilesets. But I thought I'd ask you guys who do use it why you don't mind or indeed like using them. Just a random curious question I posit to the community :)

It's the vanilla tile set, so until Toady changes it I'm going to play it the way it was meant to be :P

"Text in non-square tilesets often looks much better and is often much easier to read than in square tilesets." I don't use 'em, but there ya go  :P

I don't use tiltsets because i'm an elitist prick but it is pretty much a thing about tastes, you like tilesets while i don't, they like rectangular tilesets while you don't, easy.

Laziness and lack of interest since it don't really bother me. It does looks strange to have things stretched in odd ways.

I don't like tilesets because then the words become really hard to read, and you get really odd symbols appearing in weird places. I like the vanilla ASCII. It is what I learned to play on.

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

You play on a blank screen? Hardcore. :P

I use a slightly tidied-up version of the 16x16 ASCII that comes with the game. Even with that minor change there's a concession to the graphics aspect, as any Xes in text are two pixels below all the other capital letters. Naturally my world is called Xah something... I wish you could select the up/down stairs tile the way you can select the pillar tile.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I've really grown accustomed to the default tileset. Its kind of like the Qwerty keyboard in that regard.

I think it's all about getting used to it. If you start playing with the regular tileset and without any tools, as long as you stick with it for some time you will get used to it. I remember when I started I played without anything, not even dwarf therapist, and that was possible. Now I can't even see the difference between a dwarf and a tree on the original ASCII.

I have always used the Phoebus tileset, and have trouble sometimes seeing what peoples pictures on the forums are if their default ascii ;D

I started with lazy newb pack and that was the easiest for me tileset from the list to use. I might one day play with the default just to get a feel for it, but mostly for now I just always use phoebus.

Well for me I still use the ASCII tileset, as you'd see in my community game Fencedboot. I just prefer it to look uniform rather than oddly shaped, so I use Unknown_curses_12x12 tileset. I like it a lot.

I played a bit with the ASCII tileset and had issues identifying some things, especially stockpile designations.  So I downloaded an exe with the Phoebius set installed and have been using it since.  Just used to it now.

I like the rectangular tileset because it makes designating rooms easier for me. For some reason, square tiles just throw me right off. But I can accurately guesstimate evenly sized rooms (like 10x10 or 5x5 or 15x5) with rectangular.

I started on the original DF back when it was 2D...

then I went away...

I came back after discovering Boat murdered...

Then I started using Mayday's tileset and I realized the wonder of DF...

Now I use the DFHACK pack and use standard tileset for clean efficient interface and stonesense for keeping track of 3D architecture.

It's the one that's in the game, and so I've just gotten used to it.
It's a bit peculiar in that I know I'm making a square, but I expect to see a rectangle.
If I ever started using a square tileset I think I'd also start making rectangular rooms; I'm just so used to the way they look.
