Also bump for new info: Player roles!
Centration operates on a three tiered structure for handling player specialisations. While on the surface some of this structuring may represent that of an RPG, and indeed mimic some RPG elements (persistent statistics, for example), it’s not exactly the same.
Rank
Ranks are the top-tier of the system. There are three types of Rank: Civilian, Crew, and Commissioned. These ranks are persistent, and you can earn higher ranks by playing more and earning points in rounds.
Civilian Ranks
Civilian Ranks are mostly granted to scientists and medical professionals, although it’s not unheard of of non-military personal to hold more important positions on-board space stations and other vessels within the UniTech corporation. Earning Civilian points takes a lot of work in the field of your Specialisation (see below, such as scientific activities. Civilian ranks progress as follows:
Assistant
Graduate
Professional
Doctorate (grants Dr. prefix to your name)
Crew Ranks
Crew ranks are the main type of rank given to crew members on board space stations and other vessels within the UniTech Military. These are military ranks, which grant particular privileges, but also limit you to following orders precisely. You earn points in these ranks by following orders of superiors, and completing objectives in-game. Crew ranks excel in engineering and security roles. Crew ranks progress as follows:
Crewman
Corporal
Sergeant
Master Sergeant
Commissioned Ranks
Commissioned ranks are officers. These types of ranks are usually granted to those who show remarkable leadership qualities during training with UniTech’s training regime. Officer ranks excel in leadership roles, such as Commander or First Officer.
Ensign
Lieutenant
Major
Commander
Specialisation
Specialisations are the middle, but most important tier. There are four main specialisations that each give you boosts in that particular field, allowing you to excel and work more efficiently within that area. You earn points in these fields to gain minor non-permanent buffs per round – for example improving your medical efficiency.
Engineering
The engineering specialisation covers everything to do with engineering, construction, deconstruction, and repair. The engineers excel at repairing parts of the station, building new parts and making modifications, handling sophisticated equipment and computer use.
Security
Security personnel excel in combat, but lack in technical skill. They are able to defend themselves if attacked, but they will find it difficult to get out of tricky and complicated situations.
Medical
The Medical profession is arguably the most important (next to engineering) of the specialisations. Medical professionals are simply gods with medical equipment, able to identify and heal an injury with only minimal help from the advanced technology available.
Science
The science specialisation is for those creative types. They spend their time in the the science labs, coming up with new and interesting ways of doing things, whether that’s fiddling with the electronic circuit-boards at your disposal, mixing chemicals together for the sheer lulz of it, or torturing that poor monkey, you’re doing humanity proud!
Roles
The third tier, Roles, is actually a server-customisable preference. There are a list of standard and required roles per map, but server hosts will be able to customise their own additional roles or change the non-essential ones around to suit their server. Roles within a game are much like jobs in reality – you have a skill, science, for example, so naturally you’re going to become a scientist of some sort.
The roles also give you minor boosts in the related profession – for example a security officer would benefit greatly from the security specialisation, an Engine Technician from the Engineering specialisation, etc.
Captain
The Captain is the leader of the vessel. Your job is to maintain the discipline and order of all of the other crew, and ensure the smooth-running of whatever facility you are in charge of. (Priority to this role is given to Commissioned Officers with the Commander rank.)
First-Officer
The First-Officer is the second-in-command, under the Captain. Your job is to assist the captain, and, where appropriate, replace them. You are essentially acting as the head of the crew, ensuring all of the crew are working to schedule, maintaining shifts, and so-on.
Chief of Security
The Chief of Security handles everything to do with the security and safety of the facility. Your primary concern is to ensure that all crew are abiding by rules and regulations, that no laws are broken, and that everyone remains safe – and in rare cases, knock some heads together.
Chief of Engineering
As the Chief of Engineering, your main duty is to ensure the smooth-running of all technical, mechanical, and electrical equipment on board, with the assistance of your engineering team.
Chief Medical Officer
You’re in the position of power. You make split-second life-or-death decisions regularly, the lives of the crew are in your hands… a daunting prospect. For both you, and your victim- I mean, patients. Use the tools and crew at your disposal, and make sure everyone is fit and healthy to work.
Science Officer
You’re the head of the science team. You oversee all scientific research and development that goes on and make sure stuff is done on-time according to schedule, and then you report to the captain. Easy, right?
Operator
You’re an operator – a skilled crew-member trained in the use of the computer systems on-board. Your job could range from flying a space-craft or maintaining an orbit, to operating a communications array to broadcast a mayday to nearby friends (or foes).
Scientist
You do science! What more can you ask for?!
Engineer
You work under the Chief of Engineering to ensure the smooth-running of the station. Nice and easy… I think. Your main roles will be the maintenance of mechanical and atmospheric machinery.
Technician
As a Technician, your main role is the maintenance of electrical and technical equipment.
Medical Technician
Doctor, Medic, whatever your specialisation is, your role is simple – heal people! Keep them alive! Even if you have to run into a blazing gunfight and drag someone out by his nearly severed hand! On second thought… let’s not.
Food Technician
That’s just a fancy way of saying you’re a cook. Get to work – I’ll have a burger with a side of fries. Spare the mayo. You also double up as a bartender. Scotch on the rocks!
Chaplain/Counsellor
Depending on the religious preference of the server host, your main duty is to provide spiritual and psychological help and guidance to your crew. That doesn’t mean you can tell them they should kill everyone though. That’s just NOT nice.
Assistant
You’re the lowest of the low. You don’t even have a real job – you’re just there to get bossed around and handed about like a used rag.
There are many more possibilities you can come up with, and you’ll be able to add your own jobs to your servers too!
