Actually, the character isn't actually named "Doctor Who". His real name—at least, his real name that we're capable of understanding (His real real name is in an alien language)—is "The Doctor". "Doctor Who" is just referring to how people react to his name, and he says multiple times throughout the series in response to said question that "It's the Doctor, just the Doctor".
