Ok boys and girls, an update will be coming at some point today. Vodrilus, You'll be getting book keeper and another candidate shall be getting manager. Having one dwarf try to play merchant, foreman, and book keep is a horribly slow way to do things unless you're in a pinch for  dwarfpower.

EDIT:

UPDATE:

“Smiji, may I have a word?” Splint asked the administrative dwarf when they passed in the halls. “Sure thing Commander, what's up.” He said with a polite smile. He seemed a bit jittery, but otherwise normal. “Well, I noticed in the rosters you're pulling triple duty as our broker, manager and book keeper.” Splint said, holding a small ledger. “Well, I figure for both your own mental health and efficency's sake, I think we should find a couple dwarves who can take care of filling out the work orders and taking stock of our belongings.” Inspiredsmiji stood silently for a moment, then with a sigh, said simply “Okay. Worried I'll go funny in the head like that poor sod in the workshop?” Splint closed the ledger and shrugged. “Anything's possible. You remember those old stories about Syrupleaf yes?” She asked. “Vaguely... Ohhhh I see where you're going with this. You ARE worried I'll go funny in the head, but ina creepy functional way if I try to do all three jobs.” “Yes, in fact. I won't confiscate your arrangements, but I figured I'd let you know I'm looking for a candidate for record keeper and manager.” She said rather flatly. “Alright then I guess, I can't see the harm in it.” Inspiredsmiji replied. He waved goodbye to the militia officer and the two went about their day.

“You!” Splint said loudly as she grabbed a peasant by the collar of his shirt. “Y-Yes ma'am?” He said timidly. “You've no valuable skills at present, yes?” Splint asked, seeming agitated. “N-Not yet ma'am! Please don't hurt me!” The poor fool begged. After all, being grabbed by a dwarfette with the build of a smith holding a  pointy metal stick couldn't bode well for you. “Well now you get to be a book keeper. Once the miners finish work on the exploratory shaft, I'll have them dig you out the proper lodgings. State your name.” The commander demanded. “Vodrilus ma'am!”

“You'll do. I'll have word sent when your lodgings are finished.” With that, the woman dropped him on his ass end and walked away, looking like she was searching for something. She grabbed someone who ooked like a woodsman, and told them to find some trees to knock down so that mechanic would quit complaining bout no cages, and had a mason's shop divert it's resources to to making stone blocks to build a good and proper surface battlement. She also congratulated a hunter named Ber who was spotted dragging a now very dead giant cockatiel down the mountainside.

OoC: Well, that's all for now. Exploratory mining has yet to find anything, so that possession is probably a gonner. A shame really. Probably would have made a bitchin' cabinet or something. i'll probably be slowly chipping away at this, what with school and other stuff. But it'll get done to the end, you have my word. Better than nothing right?

I'll have a proper update done in the next day or two, but here's a spoiler:

Inspiredsmiji has gotten married.

Sorry about the sparse updates. School and a story I'm doing are sucking time up.

Drafted a mess of otherwise uneeded dwarves got uniforms set. They are set up around saving resources and reducing encumberance.

Far as I know. I'm kind of plodding along at a snails crawl though.

I'm disappointed I didn't start reading this sooner. Anyway, I'd like to request a dorfing, preferably as a dwarf with Urist in his last name.
I may or may not decide to join the overseer-list-thingy, seeing as I'm damnably busy IRL.

Is the first cavern really shallow, or are you digging too greedily and too deeply?

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

I'm fine with the pace right now. Don't beat yourself up over it or anything :P On a slightly related note, did I get a chance to be dorfed yet?

Since when has Dwarf Fortress been about doing things the easy way?

I do believe that it is in part about unnecessarily abusing the opportunities that are presented to you.

Ordinarily I'd dig right for the caverns after setting up traps to catch anything coming out so we'd have an easy supply of meat and  sellable critters. But a moody guy who is probably going to die anyway needed metal bars, but the exploratory miners have yet to find anything.

Sorry about that, I've been working on another project plus I have school. I have one proper update but I may sadly need to drop the narrative to get through my year.

It sucks cause I've been wanting approtunities to practice writing froma narrative view rather than from a journal perspective and I'll have to use something else for that. Sad really. Just a note, when my turn finishes, don't deactivate the soldiers ever. That interrupts training and may or may not aggravate patrol duty thoughts more than theyre already aggravated.
