Clannad
« on: August 30, 2012, 06:33:47 pm »

I recently played katawa shoujo (recently? meh 2 months ago)

And have since been looking for a new visual novel to sate my new found hunger for such game as before Katawa I had never even heard of such game

Only problem is I cant seem to find any site on the internet that isnt a crumpled mess of multiple parts, middleman programs and dodgy sites (Offering clanad for download)

So I was hoping somebody could point out a simple alternative for me =)

Thanks!

Why Clannad specifically? There are lots of other visual novels.

Anyway these games ARE commercial products (most of the time), so I doubt anyone can provide direct links.

1. I have scoured the internet, I do enjoy these games but am  not willing to pay for them and most good ones it appears that way

2. As far as I was aware clannad was abandonware, Am I wrong?

... abandonware is still technically illegal unless the creator/rights owner has specifically released it to the public. Forum ToS forbids such things, and Boss Toad prefers that we not skirt the line. Wink-wink-nudge-nudge stuff is sorta' alright, but nothing explicit like links or advice for finding stuff.

Yeah I rip off stuff all the time and am not too remorseful about it, but I can't put liability on Toady by using his forums to assist in that sort of thing (plus I'm not the best person to suggest VNs in the first place, since Katawa Shoujo was the first one I could stand for longer than two minutes, and I only played it for a half hour or so).

30 seconds on pirate bay turns up an english version of the Clannad visual novel. Keeping with the spirit of not encouraging illegal behavior I was not provide you with a link.

Clannad is most definitely not abandonware.

You can purchase the PC version now from Amazon for $349 new, or $199 used.
Here is an english language patch for the commericial version.
Alternately, the XBox version is available here for $91 new or $24 used.

However, if you choose to not purchase it...again, it was trivial to find a torrent.

You should ask ToonyMan, it's his favourite game ever.

Wat.

Also, this could have gone in the anime thread if it belonged anywhere; it tends to include anime-related things like VNs.

You have to import it, so the price is really high.

Import, Fran. Stuff gets expensive, and VNs actually seem to be a little high priced, from what I vaguely remember.

considering how old the VN is, yes they do but i believe they stop distributing them. J-list has the Memorial Edition instock for 80 bucks, would love to give a link but its NSFW

...huh.

So I decided to give it a try. The characterizations in the visual novel are a bit different than the anime. I was looking forward to courting Kyou, but in the VN she's rude and pretty much a complete psycopath. Nagisa isn't quite as annoying as she was in the anime. And Sunohara is such a Butt Monkey it's difficult to feel bad for him when he humiliates himself.

So far Misae is the only character I've met I've felt attraction for and she's such a minor character I'm not even sure she's a romantic option. Tomoyo is...acceptable. She's likable, but seems fairly unapproachable.

Anyway, it is very much a visual novel, and not like datesims I've played before. I think it was fully ten minutes of reading before I was even given my first choice of doing anything, and after a couple hours I'm only on day three of the school year. Not sure how much replayability it will have, but it's been entertaining so far, with a few literal laugh out loud moments.

Probably a little early to give a rating, but based on what I've seen so far I'd give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. Maybe the romantic options will grow on me, but so far I'm just not finding myself very attracted to them.

Its pretty interesting the back stories for the other characters that isn't shown for the anime, i would give the romantic options a chance you can learn alot.
