$20 was too high for me too. Sorry. I'm interested but not enough for that. Maybe once it's released.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

This looks neat.  I hope it can recapture some of the amazement and fun I had with Roboforge, which seems to have been so far unmentioned here.  The bots in that game had no default behavior.  The creator had to write programs for them to follow and define the movements of every joint besides the legs, which made the game difficult to get into for many.  I haven't been able to get the game to run on my desktop, and the server seems to have been shut down, though at least one person involved still has an online presence, luckily.

The whole programming thing led to some pretty funny battles.  For instance, one of the most deadly designs in my memory had an instruction set consisting of "Move forward."  Other designs were more sophisticated, such as the number of semi-successful designs I made which checked for particular devices in particular locations when the enemy robot was in front of them, and struck accordingly.

I keep thinking glacier fortress would be fun, but it always ends up as cave layer fortress.

A universe where you can play with amazing robots that are designed, built and even programmed by you.

Oh heck ya, how did I miss this.

The Rawbots universe has a unique set of matter, energy and physics laws. These laws are engineered to serve up fun emergent gameplay that is different every time you play. Everything you would expect from a sandbox game and more. We are taking this to the next level with gameplay that truly emerges beyond imagination and defined contextually by the type of robots you build. On one planet you might experience a first person shooting experience, go into a space battle in 3rd person, and down into an RTS offensive on another planet.

As cool as this looks, I can't see many people spending $20 at this point. There's always an associated risk that the game doesn't deliver or just isn't very good, and while promising there's a lot of competition around the $10 price range. If I were you I'd seriously consider offering some kind of free demo.

You don't have to take the risk. And in fact we don't want you to take the risk if you are not sold yet. Others are, and will be reviewing and putting up videos and talking about their experience. You can later make an informed decision.

When the game is out, you can just download the game and play as a pirate. You will know what I mean.

A fly-by shooting:

Remember all these bots are completely built by the players. The flying bot is a sophisticated combination of thrust forces and drags.

This flying bot features landing gear:

We added a new Float machine for water bots:

We'll soon post videos of underwater caves and submarines.

The shooting looks... uh... atrocious. I only realized those were guns and not thrusters on the third attempt. The rest is awesome. ^_^

Looking at some of the parts in the gallery, I'm quite excited about this. It looks like stationary bases will be built with the same parts as vehicles.

EDIT: http://www.rawbots.net/gallery/image/6-kits/
Kits are easy to use building blocks pre-crafted, designed and programmed by you or someone else. It makes it easy to share creations, build bots quickly and streamline manufacturing. Yes, you can build entire assembly lines to manufacture all your bots.

emphasis mine

EDIT2: I also noted in that same gallery that you can use as many input peripherals as you want to control as many bots as you want (something about sensor stations and cameras too), as well as using automation, and that multiple players can control different functions of the same bot too!

Big necro, but does anyone here play this? I'm really interested in it, and I badly want to be able to talk myself into getting the $30 version as opposed to the cheaper one on Desura.

Back in October I tried talking the devs into giving me a discount on the game so I could do a 10 copy giveaway to promote it but they didn't respond. It's the first time I have had that happen.  :(

That being said, as I understand it, the $30 version is cooler, but buggier while the cheapo Desura one is more fun because it's more stable.
