Finely minced everything.
« on: August 30, 2012, 02:51:32 am »

So I have a question for you guys, why is all of the food only "minced". Why not chopped? Why not grated? Why not shaved? Perhaps other stuff like "basted with~" or "slathered in" and other things like that. What are your thoughts?

Because dwarves mince thing. They like cutting anything they get their hands on. So the butchers are wishing for a little more glory, what can you do?

I'd say finely minced eldritch horror is an achievement worthy of many glories.

Because the kitchens are pretty much just a mincer, with something to cook (sometimes) the results

Mincing is fine chopping, when you got a sharp rock or a knife, everything's to be chopped finely enough to drink.... Particularly when some of your dwarves might've gotten their teeth broken out.

A better recipe system is planned by the Toady.

Meanwhile, i like to think dwarves think "cooking" simply means "mince everything as finely as possible", "mix all ingredients" and "call it a biscuit, a stew or a roast".

Easier to code it in that way for now ;D But some of the food they cook. Mmmm. I did like runesmith, designating a dwarf or captured goblin for butchering ;) Muhahaha. Tasty.

The only logical result we could get when experimenting to this quirky feature is the modded creation an edible body part called mince.

Because nothing is more dwarven than the glory of finely minced forgotten beast mince.

They mince it using a mortar and pestle, and the heat from that cooks the resulting slurry. It is then pressed into biscuits, formed into stew-sized lumps, or moulded into a fascimile of whatever roastable creature the cook was thinking of at the time.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Prepared meals made on-site always have their ingredients "minced". Prepared meals brought by caravans always have their ingredients "cooked".

Granted, during normal gameplay it's never possible for a caravan to bring prepared meals, but it's possible with a bit of memory hacking (with DFHack, it's fairly straightforward), and you can even request them during trade agreements (under "Meat/Fish Recipes" or "Other Recipes").

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Sorry for thread necromancy but my headcanon is that dwarven mince are actually basically liquidated food. They can be a bit sludgey if not done very good. The reason of this is that so the dwarves can pour the stuffs into their alcohol and drink them.

It's worth noting that dwarfs also mince their booze when cooking it. So I'm not sure if dwarf alcohol is actually liquid.

Come to think of it, that may be why they don't use mugs - mugs are for liquids, and dwarfs eat their beer/wine/whatever. They need plates!

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.

It's even better when it's roasted booze.

Don't knock it: I make rum cakes and wine cakes on occasion. It's good stuff.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.
