"9/10. It's okay." -IGN
If a AAA title was 9/10 IGN would be shitting their pants about how good it is.

But if its DF, its "okay".

The internet needs a makeover.

It was a joke, man. I don't even think IGN reviewed DF before. Cool your jets!

I'm pretty sure quite a few big gaming networks have reviewed DF before, though I'm not sure.

Edit; I just googled it. A few little websites did reviews on it (usually rated high), and also PC gamer had a bunch of stuff on it when I searched it (http://www.pcgamer.com/tag/dwarf-fortress/), which is neat.

Also, there was no rage intended there, I was also joking. I guess you just can't tell what tone someone is using over the internet.

LOL did they really post that, just shows how crazy the world is and how much most game reviewers emphasis fluff over gameplay. :). DF still scores very high without all their pointless fluff.

Dwarf Fortress is the game that introduced me to Roguelikes. It pulled me from solely playing the mind-numbing crap that the AAA companies put out and made me think. The developer Tarn Adams is one of my 'heroes' and the entire community is crystallised awesome. It's also the only game that I believe has the potential to become self-aware.

It's a fun game, and a very interesting take on what a "game" can be.  It could be a great influence on future game designs, and a statement that many games are willing to play a game with a lot of complexity.

It means a person can follow their dreams, in the case of Tarn Adams, and create something unique, and make a living off it.  It's very inspirational in that way.

It's also, unfortunately, another way for people to make themselves think they're better than others.  I'm glad it brings together this small community, but it also seems to foster isolation.  Some people seem to want their little virtual dwarves to be able to replace interaction with real people, and attribute deep meaning to a collection of semi-random events.  People want to use a niche game as a yardstick for intelligence, and claim to be more intelligent than others who don't enjoy it.  This isn't the fault of the game, it's just a common problem with people.

It's my favourite game since I discovered it.
With the stuff that is going to be added in the next releases (interaction with the world outside the fort, strategy elements) it is getting really close to "all I ever wanted in a video game".

Some people seem to want their little virtual dwarves to be able to replace interaction with real people, and attribute deep meaning to a collection of semi-random events.

Are you implying my dwarfs don't actually love me?

it means time for the third annual Christmas donation. Kind of astounding to me that I still think in terms of "40d" and "DF2010" and here it is going to be 2013 in a few days. It is a recurring theme of camaraderie between me, my husband, and my best friend.

It's a puzzle that actively resists being solved, but rewards trying anyway.
It's an oldschool cartoon full of absurdity, racism, and ultraviolence, and absolutely no apologies.
It's clay one can sculpt to form things that live in the imagination.
It's a tower defence game with an incredible array of options available.
It's a long, complex, procedurally generated dirty joke, which features punchlines not as an end, but as commas.

To me, Dwarf Fortress is the game without the pissing and shitting and raping dwarves. But it has everything else. (Bonus points if you get the inside joke.)

Serious answer: It's the only game that's kept my attention for a full year.

A few words that make it count:

Increasingly, I find that the only real enjoyment I get out of most games is figuring out how they work and exploring the mechanics and unique story the game is telling. I've always found it fascinating to see some kind of personality show through in video games, the kind of glimpse into the creator's vision that makes it personal. Dwarf Fortress would have to be the strongest example of this I've encountered thus far, and probably ever will.

For me? It the epitome of game developing. As someone said here, when done right complexity is awesome. Here, we have a game that creates a geographical world, creatures, entities, civilizations, histories and a lot more, it has this detailed EVERYTHING and honestly is what many companies dream about, but know they can't get a hold to it, they are forced to release cheap and shallow games forever to please the masses, DF is a game that creates it's own games.

No, I stand correct, DF is a tool, a program, a frame, a self making instrument that create whole universes for you to play with! What's not to love about it?

I'm curious as to how a tank would evolve. Would it climb out of the primordial ooze wiggling it's track-nubs, feeding on smaller jeeps before crawling onto the shore having evolved proper treds?
