ALL THAT BLOOD
« on: August 28, 2012, 02:39:53 pm »

Hi, I've been playing the dwarf fortress for a while now, and throughout the years, as you can imagine, a lot of blood has been spilled. The thing is, the blood isn't going away from the map. Quite a few years have passed since a minotaur has drenched my golden walls in blood and the stains just won't come off! What do I need to do?

I also freshly killed some goblings on my porch outside of the golden moat, and the grass is now stained too. I suspect it will be stained forever, just like there's blood on grass elsewhere for what seems like forever.

Dwarves will never clean an "outdoor" tile (or maybe it's "above ground", or both...).  The only thing that'll clean blood from an outdoor tile is rain, or building something on the tile (and then, optionally, removing it).

Dwarves will occasionally clean indoor tiles.  They seem more likely to do so if the tile is in a meeting zone, or if the tile is smoothed (or a constructed floor) rather than natural stone floor.  (I don't know if they clean natural soil floor tiles.)  In any case, the cleaning job is low priority.

Dwarves will never clean a wall tile directly.  However, when a dwarf cleans a floor tile, it removes all contaminants from the 8 adjacent tiles as well.  So your walls might get cleaned if there is a contaminant on a floor tile next to them (and if that floor tile is underground).

Dwarves will clean indoor stone floors, but it's a very low-priority jobs. They will not clean dirt floors or anything outdoors.
Outdoor contaminants can be cleaned by rain.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll just wait for rain then. It's a warm area, and there hasn't been any rain for a while, so I suspect that's the cause. Thanks again.

Or if you insist on cleanliness then you should invest in some pumps and flood the area with water to clean it out.

If I recall correctly, smoothing a stone floor or wall removes the blood too.

Who said It had to be using pumps? just sic the river at it, simple as that (one floodgate should hold it back)

Not every map has a river.

Lazy mans way would be DFhack. IIRC the command is "cleanmap".

Another way is to build walls of hematite. Blood-colored walls, so any splashes of dismembered goblin fluids are not visible.

Until the trolls come and ruin everything with their ichor, that is.

Not every map has a river.
Aquifer then, some water source on it

Pumps would be required.
De- and re-construct your wall. Optionally, station some militiadwarves near the breech, just in case.

I don't see why having the blood of your enemies on the walls would be a bad thing, though.

It ruins the look of my brand new floors I just engraved (yes I engrave my enterance, want the caravans to think they're dealing with some good craftsmen not some bloodthirsty barbaric war race (which is what my dwarves are pretty much after a couple of goblins show up))
