Judging by these graffiti, the Roman society was pretty similar to today's Western society, only with less guns and more orgies.

The Roman Twitter:
Quote
I.7 (gladiator barracks); 8792: On April 19th, I made bread
Quote
VI.11 (on the Vico del Labirinto); 1393: On April 20th, I gave a cloak to be washed.  On May 7th, a headband.  On May 8th, two tunics
Quote
VIII.2 (in the basilica); 1864: Samius to Cornelius: go hang yourself!
Quote
VIII.2 (in the basilica); 1880: The man I am having dinner with is a barbarian.

Quote
VIII.2 (in the basilica); 1904: O walls, you have held up so much tedious graffiti that I am amazed that you have not already collapsed in ruin.
How ironic.

Those Romans sure loved defecating outdoors.

Also, there is a suspicious lack of anarchist graffiti and those about punk not being dead.

And no phone number to call if you want a blowjob.

They had written advertisements instead:

Quote
I.10.4 (near the rear entrance vestibule of the House of Menander); 8356: At Nuceria, look for Novellia Primigenia near the Roman gate in the prostitute’s district.

Quote
VIII.1 (above a bench outside the Marine Gate); 1751: If anyone sits here, let him read this first of all: if anyone wants a screw, he should look for Attice; she costs 4 sestertii.

If someone invents a way to visit the past which doesn't endanger the space-time continuum, Pompeii will be number one tourist destination for some people (for those people who can actually manage to learn Latin in order to look like an average Roman, or those people who have their very own TARDIS)

When I first read this a while back, I was actually awed at how similar people are, no matter how many centuries it been. It's simply amazing, no matter what time period, people will always feel it right to 'like' something and announce it to the world, as well as their own unimportant details.

from all the sources I have read, roman society seems remarkably similar to our own. ( I am no expert however).
It is quite interesting.

The lack of "Romanes Eunt Domus" inscription indicates that there had been no PFJ operatives active in Pompeii.

I've actually visited a relatively famous Viking graffiti site in the Orkneys.

http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/maeshowe/maeshrunes.htm

Most of it is of the "I woz here" format.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
