Goings onOne of the new forges in the desert is attacked by the Dragon, and a shipment of iron bars is taken back to his lair. Finally, he has amassed a small hoard again. He hasn't seen the shadows of Kobolds lurking in his mountainhome in a while, and he even occasionally removes the crown from his nose. One Dwarven fishery is boiled, the fish is taken to the Dragon's lair. One Elvish village burnt.
The iron mine N-17 is flooded with a swarm of carnivorous moles, who bite at the miners and impede (but don't halt entirely) the mine's operation. If they are not killed soon, they will eat all of the weak miners. This would never happen to a strong Dwarven mining crew, but the puny Human miners couldn't use a pick as weapon if their lives depended on it (which it does in this case). Meanwhile, in the scorched sulfur mine which had acted as a portal for the Balrog to enter the mortal realm, a crew of Human slaves have been locked inside and told that their debts to society will be paid when they produce 14 tons of sulfur, as per their new monarch's orders. The Humans board over the entrance to hell, but the boards just catch on fire, so they decide just not to go in that area anymore. In a different portion of the mine, they dig much deeper than is safe into the sulfur deposit. One of the miners discovers a hollow floor and begins stamping on it to test it out. The floor crumbles beneath his feet and he falls out of site into the unkown. The whole mine floods with fire and a Demonic voice, which produces debilitating screams. The balrog ascends the mine shafts, killing all of the miners, and bursts through the side of the mountain into the fresh air. He too seeks vengeance upon the Humans. Across the mountain he sees his brother in arms, Fle'k Bre'n, decimating hordes of Humans. The new balrog, Fle'k Mreth, feels as happy as a Balrog can (extreme rage) and energetically swings his two maces at Human buildings with a new-found zeal. The people of Freaquestia protest their leader's dangerous mining policies, but naysayers are put to death personally by the Madame via a steel hammer. She is so busy killing, that she often doesn't have time to change clothes. Because of this, she has taken to wearing exclusively red dress in order to disguise any possible blood spatter she has on her. This new tendency has earned the nickname "Matilda the Red". The gigantic militia falls entirely to Fle'k Bre'n. The few who can get their hands on steel weapons charge at the demon, while the rest are ordered to hold their ground. Over half of the militia deserts and defects to the nearby forests. The few that remain are easily defeated by the Balrog, even those with weapons.
Grek II, eager to unite with his father and conquer the Universe together, collected six magical artifacts from across the world and united them. This unification opened a portal to the underworld, allowing Grek I (at this time, supreme ruler of the underworld) to pass unto the mortal realm. Instead of allying with his son, however, Grek killed Grek II and took all of the power for himself, becoming the ultimate power in the Eighth Universe. Grek Ruled over the two kingdoms of Hell and Earth, converting the fertile lands of the over world into a desolate playground for demons and utilized Hell as an infinitely sized torture chamber for all of the mortals. During his rule, Grek discovered that his arch nemesis, the necromancer Sormander, was not completely destroyed, as he had thought. Just as Grek had arrived in the Underworld after being killed by the necromancer, Sormander himself had done the same, but had hidden himself in the infinite plane of Hell. Sormander now had the opportunity to study not just living and dead physical beings, but actual tangible souls of the deceased, especially his own. During his long period of studying in secret, Sormander developed a method to revive completely destroyed souls. Using this method, Sormander used his small circle of followers to retrieve Grek II's skeleton from the mortal realm and bring it to him. The necromancer revived Grek II soul and imbued the skeleton with it. Now Grek II, eager to avenge his own death and to become the own King of the Universe, began to plot a coupe against Grek I. Throughout all of this, Sormander and his minions never revealed themselves to Grek II, leaving Grek II completely stupefied as to how he returned into being. As per Sormander's plan, Grek II managed to steal both his and his father's favorite artifact, the Cloak of Shadows. Using the Cloak, the skeletal prince took possession of all of his father's magical items and, before Grek I knew what had happened, became the sole ruler of the Universe. After this, Sormander revealed himself to Grek II, then instantly snuffed out the new king's soul. Now the necromancer had all of the artifacts, Grek II was merely a skeletal husk, and Grek I was a mortal elf once again. Sormander ordered Grek into an impenetrable (so he thought) prison, where he would live on forever (he's an elf) in solitude and misery. His son's animated skeleton was allowed some cognitive function, but his soul was programmed by the necromancer to be incapable of defying Sormander's orders. Grek II became the second in command of the Universal Necromantic Empire, and was given the Sword of Time to use and protect. When the Kobold shamans created a contact link between the desolate mortal realm and Grek's prison, Sormander feared that Grek had discovered the locations of two hidden magical artifacts on the surface, and was negotiating a way to retrieve them with the help of the few mortals who evaded capture. As a precaution, the entire surface world was obliterated via the combined power of all six artifacts, then reformed into the shape we know it today. After this, the underworld was destroyed and reformed to a relatively similar status. During this commotion, Grek burst from his cell and, while unarmed and chained, beat his demon guards to death. He rushed across the burning wasteland until he arrived at Sormander's throne room, where he confronted the Necromancer king. Sormander, despite being all-powerful ruler of the Universe, feared Grek and knew he had something up his sleeve. Sormander cast all of the artifacts into the mortal realm (including the Sword of Time which was to be guarded by Grek II) and sealed the underworld completely off from the over world. Grek's physical life force was extinguished with a snap of the necromancer's fingers, but his soul remained alive, trapped within a dead body. The body became an extra layer of security for Grek himself and was thrown back into the prison. What Sormander neglected to realize was that Grek II, who was his own father's most powerful prison guard, could still return to Hell, using the Sword to form a portal between the prison and him. The conniving Grek knew all about this, and counted on the Kobolds to act on the ancestral memory he had implanted in them; to retrieve the Sword and free Grek I.
Once transported to the mortal world, the skeleton of Grek II used the sword to make the majority of an entire continent uninhabitable by mortals as a safety precaution (he would have simply turned the whole world into dust, but somewhere deep down he was still an elf and he could not bring himself to destroy the forests). In the center of the desert, he built a tomb with the sword displayed in the center, with an open sarcophagus for himself to lay at guard for eternity. After thousands of years of staring at the sword, the door to the tomb was finally opened. However, the intruders were so incredibly stealthy that even the superhuman guardian did not detect them until he sensed the sword being touched. He jumped out of the sarcophagus and killed all but one of the Kobolds with a single strike each. The last remaining drew the sword from it's pedestal, and struck Grek II with the Sword of Time, turning even the ancient immortal into a heap of dust. The Kobold couldn't believe his luck; he alone out of the huge raiding party had survived. His hysterical giggles were interrupted a horrible pain as he himself disintegrated. Another party of Kobolds came and retrieved the Sword, drawing straws as to who had to touch it.
